Chapter 11

We arrived at the Plaza a few minutes ago. Having alighted, I stood to the left, waiting for Leo to finish his call.

I shifted my footing from left to right, my hands rooted deep in my pockets. By a frail hair was I saved earlier. We arrived at the Plaza just as soon as Leo's question settled in.

I sincerely did not have the mind for this, and I could not emphasize how much I regretted my actions with Kai. Once, the fantasy had blurred my sight, and the fear ingrained in the harem made it worth dying over, but now, I felt like Leo was catching on.

My thoughts cut short when he stepped out, walking up to me. Leo's lips spread as he spoke in a high pitched tone. "Sorry, I had to take that call. Now, let's go do some shopping for the pack."

I was certain the maids could have helped with this, but Leo was rather determined to do it himself, exaggerating his mothering nature.

The attendant by the shelves was helping us gather the gifts when Leo ushered me to the bleachers just to the right of the space. I sat with a sigh ripping out of me, eyes strained and limbs sore.

After a few minutes, Leo started. "You didn't answer my question earlier."

Fluttering open, my gaze turned to Leo. "Uh, sorry, what?" I feigned ignorance, trying to breathe steadily so I would not sell myself off.

"You've been spending more time with Kai lately. Do you think he might be cheating on me?"

"What? No," I blurted out and pressed my lips into a thin line. That came out rather abrupt and overly defensive. I cleared my throat, smiling mildly. "For the moon's sake, you can't allow yourself to think like that, Leo. You and Kai are, every day, getting closer to being mated before the entire pack under the full moon. I think you should focus on that."

Perhaps that was why I stole the little moments I could with Kai for myself, turning myself into the snitching devil of this story. The knowledge that Leo would eventually, soon enough by the way, become the Luna, and the reality that the entire pack already knew Leo as their soon to be Luna, meant there was no way I could even threaten that.

This confirmed my thoughts even further. The harem between Kai and me was merely an infatuation. It happened, but it could never go further. So instead, I had to end it before it affected my own future.

"You've been zoning out a lot, haven't you?"

"No, no, trust me, I'm listening." I lied for the umpteenth time.

Leo nodded but did not buy it. "It's just that he doesn't spend much time with me anymore. We don't even have sex as much as before. My Omega scent used to push him into rut, but I'm not sure I have that effect on him anymore." Leo's voice dropped, a glint in his eyes where I saw sobriety, and it hurt me to the bone. "He doesn't look at me the way he used to. I thought you might know something about it."

I scanned Leo's face, solemn and faltering, feeling a gnashing ache claw at the back of my throat. "I'm pretty sure it's probably just a misunderstanding."

"Your fingers. Is it the cold again?"

As soon as I noticed their quivering appearance, I shoved them under my shirt and put on a smile that did not reach my eyes.

The air shifted, marked by a familiar intoxicating scent, urging me to search for it, and it turned out to be Kai.

He stopped behind us. He stood tall, radiating strength and firmness, eyes almost as narrow as pinpricks as they scanned both Leo and me. But only I had noticed his arrival, which left a furrow in my brows that Leo did not smell his approach.

"Kai's here," I said, tapping Leo. Perking up at the call, he turned his head, flashing a smile before jumping into Kai's arms.

How could I notice Kai's scent faster than Leo?

Leo went to pay for the goods we bought, and Kai came to occupy Leo's space beside me. I had once been comfortable there, although not anymore. Let's not even start with my racing heart or my fingers entwined together, picking at my skin, or my toes tapping endlessly against the floor.

"You're agitated," Kai claimed. He touched my shirt, but I swayed away before his fingers could brush my skin. "Still running from me, aren't you?"

When Leo came back, Kai muttered, "Could you supervise the stocking of the gifts? I've got to get something special for your uncle, and I need Alex's help. You did say he's good at picking the right things, didn't you?" Kai's tone was without doubt laced with humor. The amusement was as clear as the heat of a scorching sun.

Leo hummed and left with the attendants behind him.

"Come on..."

I obeyed instantly. It was as though my legs now had a mind of their own. With each step we took, my heart tightened and my hole clenched.

I did not realize when Kai stopped, so I bumped into him headfirst. He spun around. I found us in the middle of stocked shelves, in the toiletries section.
