Maya's Pov
Laughter echoed down the hallway like nothing in the world was wrong. Like shadows weren’t shifting just outside our reach. Like Samira hadn’t escaped.
It had been three days since the council meeting. Three days since I overheard Conan shout, “She won’t get near my son!”
Three days of pretending everything was fine.
It wasn’t.
Jayden darted past me again, a paper sword clutched in his hand, yelling something about being the king of dragons. Henry followed a step behind, silent as ever, but his eyes never left Jayden. Not once.
I stood in the doorway watching them, arms folded tightly across my chest.
“Don’t go too far, okay?” I called.
They might say I'm paranoid but I know too well I'm not.
“We’re not even leaving the hallway!” Jayden sho

Maya’s povHis soft breathing is the only thing grounding me. I sit at the edge of his bed, knees pulled tight to my chest, eyes wide open though they burn with exhaustion. My hands are trembling. I can still hear it,those whispers on the wind, like invisible claws brushing against my skin."She’s close.""He will choose.""The balance is shifting."I don't know what they mean, but every syllable sinks into my bones like ice. And the worst part? I don’t think they’re dreams anymore.Jayden rolls in his sleep, murmurs something about pancakes and monsters, and snuggles deeper into his blanket fortress. I touch his cheek, warm and soft. Still untouched by the rot that's seeping into my world. He’s safe, for now.I rise, quietly as I can, and tiptoe down the hall. Henry’s door creaks open before I even touch it.He’s curled in the corner of the bed, not the center, like he’s trying to disappear. The moonlight spills across his face. Pale. Too pale. His lips are trembling even in his slee
Maya's PovJayden crashes into me, wrapping his arms around my legs like a little human wrecking ball. “Mommy! Henry said I look like a superhero when I run!”I force a laugh and ruffle his messy curls. “That’s because you are a superhero.”“Can I be one forever?” he beams, eyes lit like they’ve never known fear or confusion. I envy that. I envy him.Somehow I remember when he always looked at me with nothing but disdain...but now?Henry’s watching us from under the jasmine bush, silent as usual, his small fingers cradling a dying flower. His gaze is… different. Knowing. Too knowing. Like he understands far more than a child should. His eyes flick briefly to Conan, still inside, then back to the wilting bloom. My stomach knots.Jayden pulls at my sleeve again. “Mommy, come chase us!”“I will in a minute, baby,” I whisper, kissing his forehead. He darts off, arms wide like wings, chasing the wind. I crouch beside Henry, who hasn’t moved.“You okay, sweetheart?”He nods, but I notice hi
Maya's PovJayden wouldn't stop giggling as I tried tying his shoelaces. His left leg kept twitching with excitement.“Jay, I swear, if you move one more time...”“But Mommy, Henry said there’s a dragon in the garden!” he shrieked.I shot a look at the little culprit standing by the backdoor with his arms folded. Henry who stared back completely unfazed.“There’s no dragon,” I muttered, tugging the knot tight.“There was,” Henry insisted. “Last night. I heard it growling.”Jayden gasped. “I wanna see!”Good. Let them go hunt imaginary dragons. Anything to keep me from going back inside and looking him in the eye.“Outside,” I said, standing quickly. “Go.”Jayden didn’t need to be told twice. He tore through the open doors like a whirlwind, Henry following calmly behind with the kind of coolness that only came from Conan’s genes.I remained by the doorframe, arms folded, watching them chase each other across the garden. Henry climbed the low stone bench and roared. Jayden screamed and
Maya’s POVAnother sound.“What the hell, who is that?" Conan's breath hutched against the back of my neck.I watched the door open after sliding out of the sheets, my body arched, still tingling from the aftershocks of what we'd shared.I was drenched in the memory of his hands and mouth, while I realized it was Henry's cat. He's been playing on the door.I got back in and exhaled. “It's Henry's cat." I said, then shut the door. With Conan gaze ranking over me, he propped up on one elbow. He stood up with a blanket wrapped around him but it fell and exposed his bare chest, the trail of far hair leading to his lower and the lines of his abdomen. His cock was hard, standing like it's waiting to take action.“Get back in the bed, we were in the middle of something." H
Maya’s POVI stirred slowly, with the warmth of the room sinking into my skin. The scent of faint smoke, something uniquely Conan had wrapped around me.I just let myself feel his breath, for a moment, I didn't open my eyes. The weight of his arms around my waist and the softness of his breath wrapped over my waist. Like even in sleep we refuse to be apart because my legs were still entangled with his.The space beneath the cover was warm from his body but the fire has long since died.Shifting slightly against his chest, I pressed back. He left out a sleepy groan as his grip tightened my middle. He pulled me closer. With a voice thick with sleep and something far softer, he mumbled, “I know you are awake,"" Just barely.” I said, then smiled into the pillow.“You looked like you were finally at peace so I didn't want to wake you." He kissed my shoulder, trailing a line which mad
