NATHAN
I stared hard at Carol. Wondering what I'd do with her. We were in the pack meeting room. And she was standing a few feet in front of me, a stubborn pout on her face as she sulked in the middle of the large study.
I leaned forward in the huge chair I was sitting in, just in front of the fireplace. I dropped my forearms on my thighs, stapling my fingers together as I observed her grimly.
She'd gone and done it again.
"Carol." My voice is barely above a whisper.
Nothing. No movement or reply. Just the sound of her laboured breathing. She didn't even twitch. It was like she had turned into stone.
"Look at me when I talk to you."
Her head snapped up to look at me. For the first time since she arrived in the room.
"Now explain yourself." I ordered, sending her a hard look.
She straightened out her shoulders and huffed with an incredulous tone, like she couldn't believe I was doing this.
"I only went to see what the girl looked like, Nate. Nothing else."
I leaned back in my chair. That would not cut it, not this time.
"And you just let slip what you did?"
"Yes." she said, nodding vigorously like the action would further convince me.
"You went too far this time, Carolyn. You went to my place uninvited, and you interfered with a plan that was already in motion." I said gravely.
She must have seen the look on my face then. Her stubborn look was immediately replaced with a penitent one.
"I'm so sorry, Nate. I swear, it won't happen again. I didn't really say anything to her. Just that... I only... called her by her name." She finished in a breathless whisper.
I refused to show even a flicker of emotion on my face. I hadn't heard that part from Faye.
Carol needed to know her place. She has always had a habit of going after females I was involved with and playing games with them. She couldn't do it this time. Faye wasn't just a temporal woman. She was something more, something important to the grand scheme of things.
I rubbed the top of the whiskey tumbler, pausing for a moment, and then giving her my punishment.
"I ban you from pack meetings for a week, Carol. And you're not allowed on the pack grounds at the same time."
She gasped out a breath. "You can't do that."
I raised a brow. "Really, now?"
"I mean, why would you ban me from pack meetings just cause I went to see the girl? She's not even that important and you're taking it this far?"
"You really want me to explain to you why you're getting punished?" I threw her a dismissive glance as I picked my glass off the coffee table and drank the contents.
She looked like the puppy she was. "Do you even know what it's like?" she asked in her low voice. Her cheeks were flushed pink.
I snorted out an answer. "What?"
She shook her head. "Never mind."
But I noticed the slight tremble in her lower lip, and I could feel her heart beating fast under her shirt. The little traitor. She thought I didn't notice? I guess we both knew better.
"Don't play coy, Carolyn. Tell me." I prompted sternly.
Her hands balled into fists in front of herself. "To care about someone and to see them being with people not deserving of them."
I turned to look at her, the scowl on my face clear. I had known getting involved with Carol was a bad idea, but I had done it, anyway. Now she fancied an idea of the two of us being mates.
"I hope, for your sake, that you never spurt that nonsense somewhere else. There's a pack meeting in five minutes and it will be your last." I remind her grimly. She should leave. I banned her for a week and she knows not to disobey.
She storms out of the room, slamming the door loudly.
"You know, you brought this upon yourself." Another voice said, as the owner came out of the shadows he enjoyed melding with.
I turned to watch Lannon as he stepped out into the room, walking closer to me. The beta had a thing for shadows, even though we all always knew he was there.
I shrugged off the pointed blame. Just because we'd had something together, in the not so far past, didn't mean Carol had the right to meddle with my private life and pack activities.
"I've got to go pick Faye from the spa." I said promptly.
"The girl?" Lannon looked at me cryptically. "Well, well, someone's really taking their role seriously."
I chuckled darkly, settling down to wait for the rest of the pack for the meeting.
I drove to the spa, allowing my thoughts to drift to Faye again. Slender as she was and with beautiful hazel eyes. She was attractive, even if not really my type.
But she was the daughter of an Alpha. That fact made her extremely special. I couldn't overlook it.
And Carol dropping by to say things to her was unacceptable.
I drove into the parking lot, parking in a designated spot. I hoped it was over, so we could get on our way.
I briefly remembered about her broken skin. The whip marks had receded somewhat, but she had older marks.
Stepping out of my car, I sauntered to the elevator. Getting to the floor the spa was on, it opened silently, and I stepped out.
Crossing into Elise's office, I sat, expecting someone with an update.
Something wasn't right. I could tell immediately from the scent in the air. Fear. Anxiety.
It reeked off the walls of the room. I wondered what was wrong.
I remained indifferent as I wondered what the problem might be. I settled on the couch, waiting for Faye. They should know by now that I disliked being kept waiting.
There's movement behind a curtain and Elise stepped out. Elise is human. She does not have any of our abilities, nor does she know of our existence. The co-owner in the business was one of us, though.
I looked at her face. Something was seriously wrong to have put that look of worry on Elise's face. She was capable, and not a lot fazed her.
I sat upright. "What is it, Elise?"
She dithered for a moment before she replied."Faye, Mr Carver."
My senses went on alert immediately." Yes? What about her?" I urged her to speak faster.
"We can't find her, Mr Carver."
FAYE I moved forward slowly, staring at the TV. The girl was standing behind me, but I no longer felt her as I struggled to breathe.“He’s looking for me.” It’s all I muttered as I stared at the paused screen of the news report.“Who?” the girl questioned from a million miles away as I stumbled and walked in uneven steps across the room, closer to the TV.I reached out my hand as I neared the image that can’t be true, but is. My fingers trembled when I slowly pressed them onto the screen. My breaths fractured and filled the room.If my father was looking for me so publicly, would Nathan still want me with him? And if they found me with him, wouldn't they make me go with my dad, since he was my biological parent?I shook my head. I didn't want to go with him. I didn't want to go back. And I was eighteen already. That meant I could make my own decisions free of parental control or permission. A rush of panic seized me again as I realized I was considering the matter too simply. My
FAYE"The look on your face as you say that. You believe I'd give you back?" Nathan looks at me quizzically, jaw locked and expression cool. I lowered my eyes, not knowing what to say in answer to his question. He strolled towards me in long-legged strides. He bent to pull me up, standing with his arms around me. I gulped as I breathed in his spicy masculine scent, already feeling tongue-tied. He pulled me with him upstairs, bringing us to a standstill in front of one of the full-length mirrors in the closet. He pulled a box out of his slacks and I watched in stunned silence as he pulled out a diamond necklace and held it to my neck. Flipping my hair tenderly to the front as he pulled the necklace round my neck and clasped it. I let out a shaky breath as I fingered the exquisite necklace. It was a solitaire diamond necklace. I only knew what it was because I'd seen it when my step mom had requested it from my dad."It's beautiful." I whispered, turning around to look at him. He w
NATHANI opened my eyes slowly, my eyes immediately getting used to the shadows of the room. Glancing over at the window, I could tell it was almost dawn. Time to get a move on if I would make it back to Manhattan early enough for the pack meeting. I could hear Faye's soft breathing beside me. Heard her heart thudding softly. I couldn't sense her wolf or smell anything that said she was one. Weird. I knew she was latent, but this was truly horrible. I had to wake her wolf.I went to get out of bed, glancing over at her bare skin. The sight of tiny stripes of whip marks on her pale skin made me growl in furious anger. He'd almost ruined all of her skin. I refused to think of what the marks on her skin reminded me of. I got up, my hard on reminding me of the night before. Faye was truly mine now. In every sense. I'd had to be softer than I knew myself to be capable of. That had surprised me. And I hadn't taken my pleasure. Also, something I'd never have done.I walked into the ensuit
FAYE We're back at the glasshouse the next day and I can tell that something is different with Nathan. He seemed less attentive and his face had lost all warmth. He didn't give me any soft smirks, nor did we talk much on our drive back to the house. Something happened while he was out the other day, I could tell. I wanted his attention and his touch badly. I needed some sort of assurance. After I'd seen that picture frame, my whole mind was in turmoil. Nathan didn't wear any ring on his hand, and maybe that meant he wasn't married anymore. Despite that, I realized how little I know about him. The pain I'd felt when I'd seen that picture frame. My chest hurts just remembering it. I love him, and yet I don't know him. In fact, if I thought hard about it, I only knew his name and now, I knew he was married before. I sat up on the bed as Nathan emerged from the bathroom. "There's an award ceremony tomorrow night. It's supposed to be an honorary event." I nodded, listening to wha
FAYE The portrait of the black rose hanging in Nathan's study was not nothing. It was definitely not for mere aesthetics. The black rose was the black saints symbol. I tried to shake off everything, but my head was pounding and I still couldn't breathe properly. The air in here was stifling. I stood up on watery legs, turning to go get some fresh air outside. I heard Lannon ask something, but I ignored his questions as I walked shakily out of the large hall. Immediately I stepped outside, I took In a burst of fresh air, my throats clearing up as I swallowed. I immediately felt better, out in the open area. The number of reporters had reduced. They were probably inside now, making sure they didn't miss any juicy moment. I walked towards the parking lot, wanting the privacy the cars would give by shielding my form. I stood in between a couple of them, not daring to lean against one, before it would start to horn loudly in warning. I breathed in deeply for a few more minute
FAYE"It's always a pleasure helping old friends, Joseph."My brain dulled down to a slow whir. After years of being called dumb by my father and his little family, I was finally considering that I really must be dumb.I stared stupidly at the both of them. Trying to make sense of what was going on.What the hell was going on here?A disgusting grin spread across my father's face as he nodded."In the future, I hope we can continue to work together, Joseph. And if you're ever in a bind," he paused, chuckling without a trace of humor, " reach out to me. I'll certainly help in any way that I can."I was work? "And the girl? What will you do with her?" He asked again, and I sagged like a limp noodle in my father's grip, my wails growing louder. He was supposed to save me. He was supposed to shield me from my father. That's what he promised me. "For the troubles, I'll have to punish her. Such willful disobedience and lack of respect are what I hate. She is everything I detest and abho
NATHANI watched Rhea from across the table as she made more flirty remarks, all but naked in her deep plunging neckline dress. I sat back, expressing interest in whatever the heck she was saying. I needed her to keep talking. Which she did. A lot of endless chatter. And not once did she let slip what I needed her to. Rhea worked as a bar attendant just for the fun of it at night. Her father was a highly respected councilman, but she'd never taken to any other means of earning a living. She lived off a plush trust fund, and worked at the underground bar, Phantasm, where our kind hung out, mostly for the free drinks. The bar was a playground for creatures of the night. And it was one of the special ones. You only got in with special access. Our investigations on Jordan's death had yielded the tiniest bit of information. Some witches had messed with the packs around. Newly turned wolves precisely. I hadn't cared when I'd heard witches were causing trouble for the other packs, but
FAYEI drifted in and out of consciousness. My entire body burned with the pain. My ribs ached when I coughed. The blood had caked around my nose, making it harder to breathe. I lay in the little cell in the basement, the chill of the cold hard floor slowly seeping into my bones. I drifted off again. The next time I woke up, I saw I had received a bit of medical attention. My breathing harder because a bandage was wrapped tightly around my chest. The coppery taste of blood in my mouth abated. My ribs still ached. Maybe they didn't want me to die yet. Surely they'd make my death more painful. My eyelids slipped close, weighed down by exhaustion and pain. Something woke me up the third time. A dark presence looming over me. My eyes slid open. I blinked, getting used to the small sliver of light from under the doorway. I looked up at the shadow, staring right into the eyes of the man I loved. His hands hung carelessly over the bars holding me in, gaze dark and grim, he stared down at
