Chapter 7

Author: Porcelain Sue
I stood up 'distractedly' and headed to the condiment station. There, I scooped three huge spoonfuls of bacon bits and quickly dumped them into my bowl.

I returned to my seat and forced down the urge to wolf it all down, eating with the most elegant manner possible in small bites while keeping a watchful eye on the servers and manager from the corner of my eye.

The server seemed to have a built-in radar. She asked, "Miss, you seem so upset. Would you like to try our new tomato bisque? It's tangy and really helps with your appetite!"

A bowl of tempting tomato bisque appeared in front of me. "Let me get you some snacks too, okay?"

A plate of complimentary fries followed right after.

"Still no word from your boyfriend?" The server came over again, seemingly eager to know what was happening with a tinge of sympathy. She was clearly even more anxious than I was.

I instantly became more wary, realizing she was asking way too often. So, I switched modes, tears filling my eyes again.

  • Survival of the Poorest   Chapter 15

Steve let out a piercing scream as he covered his face and stumbled backward, doubled over in pain.I scrambled on all fours toward the driver's seat. When I had been hiding earlier, I had confirmed that not only was this car's trunk unlocked, but the driver's door was unlocked too. Moreover, the keys were still in the ignition.Steve roared, "You little witch! I'm going to skin you alive!"He ignored the pain and lunged at me like an enraged lion, his knife grazing my head before stabbing viciously into the leather driver's seat.My fingers found the cold keys, and I twisted hard. The engine growled to life with a thunderous rumble. I slammed the gear into 'Drive' and stomped the gas pedal with every ounce of strength in my body.Steve did not expect the SUV to launch forward, so the force hurled him into the air and slammed him onto the hood of a nearby car with a deafening crash before his body slid limp to the floor.Even then, he still tried to get up, but I threw the SUV

Omari rushed to explain. "Don't listen to that anonymous crap! I'm just like you–this is my first time playing!"Nobody believed him anymore, though. Reason collapsed under the weight of 200 million."Kill him, and we'll know if the 200 million is real!""Kill him!""Kill him!"The brawl erupted again, even more brutal this time. Everyone's eyes had turned red, fighting like madmen for that rumored 200 million prize.I took advantage of the chaos to find an unlocked SUV and quietly slipped into the trunk. In the dark space, I curled into a ball and listened through the crack as screams and system announcements continued outside.Time ticked by second by second, and the sounds outside slowly died down.Eventually, the entire garage fell silent.I carefully peeked through the crack and only saw bloodstains and bodies everywhere.Right then, a familiar voice rang out."Melanie! Melanie! Where are you?"It was Steve!"I've got Omari captured! Come out quick, and we can kill him

If they split 120 million among 13 people, each of them would get close to 10 million. This was way safer than fighting alone, and his team's expressions shifted from fear and suspicion to a twisted sense of 'collective security'.On our side, Steve's expression was grave. "Everyone, stay calm. Don't fall for the system's tricks. Omari's team will unite to kill us all first, so we can't turn on each other. The seven of us take out his team, then split the 120 million evenly. That's our best option right now."Sam collapsed on the ground. "How do we kill them? We're outnumbered! We're just sitting ducks now.""Let's find somewhere to hide first and split them up. I know a place," I suggested. At midnight, a blood-red 24-hour countdown appeared on the screen.[The hunt begins! Good luck staying alive!]The entire airport's lighting instantly turned a blinding crimson red, flashing like crazy. Then, a shrill alarm blared, yet it did not come from speakers but directly rang inside ou

The security guard took the card, swiped it through the machine, and a green light flashed."Welcome, platinum member. Please enter."The door opened.Omari, who had been watching the VIP lounge the whole time, suddenly shouted, "Wait! She must've stolen that card!"I cursed internally, 'This fatty is way too sneaky!'Steve led our people into a confrontation with Omari's crew at the elevator. It was six against ten, not a hopeless disadvantage.Taking advantage of the chaos, I quickly slipped through the glass door and grabbed the supply crate. The system's voice sounded like heaven itself."Congratulations, Player 66, for securing the supply crate. The items inside can only be used by players designated by Player 66. Anyone attempting to steal them will be unable to access the items."Then, the system broadcast another announcement."Third Emergency Supply Crate Spawned: T3 Terminal, Central Information Desk Platform!"It was an open, exposed platform with nowhere to hide

  • Survival of the Poorest   Chapter 11

A few lone wolf players lingering on the edge had desperate, crazed looks in their eyes. I could tell that their stats had definitely bottomed out, so they would be eliminated tonight for sure.People like that were always the easiest to use.I hid behind a pillar and whispered to my teammates, "The keycard for the employee break room is in the fire cabinet right there.""For real? Did the system put it there on purpose?""Keep your voice down! Omari's people are guarding the door right now. We'll wait for the right moment to grab the keycard."A lone wolf player standing in front of the pillar happened to overhear. He instantly went berserk and lunged for the fire cabinet."Stop him!" Omari ordered. However, it was too late. The player yanked open the glass door of the fire cabinet. Unfortunately for him, there was no keycard inside at all, and he had triggered the alarm. The shriek of the fire alarm blasted across the entire B2 floor. Almost immediately, six fully geared sec

Player 48 turned and quickly exchanged glances with his teammates."Alright." Player 48 finally decided and extended his hand to me. "Melanie, welcome aboard. I'm Steve Johnson. This is Kyle Rivers, Chase Walker, Dennis Porter, Sam Sullivan, and Tyler Morrison. The rule for joining our team is: absolutely no betraying your teammates."I nodded. "Looking forward to working together."I traded water for food within the team. However, when the dawn of day six arrived, it brought no hope at all–only deeper despair.I went to the security checkpoint alone, hoping to score more water. However, I saw five security guards stationed there, watching the trash bins like hawks. It seemed that the system had blocked off this route as well. Just like that, the last stable water source was gone. Some players who had endured thirst the entire previous day finally drank from the bathroom faucets. Yet, the virus instantly knocked them down, and they were eliminated.Right then, the airport annou
