"Fine. I accept."

As the system's mechanical voice faded, a profound weakness washed over my entire body.

I had agreed to take on the new mission, but I honestly had no idea if I could actually pull it off.

After all, I had spent so many years failing to earn a single shred of their love, so it was hard to believe they would suddenly regret my death now.

Still, I didn't have time to dwell on it, for the massive blood loss and agonizing pain were quickly dragging my consciousness under.

I still remembered right after the accident happened, someone moved my limp body around.

It was my older brother, Owen Winslow.

He had nothing but a tiny scratch on his leg, yet he was leaning over me and smearing my blood all over himself.

So, when the ambulance screeched to a halt and the doctor jumped out, the first thing she saw was Owen lying in a pool of blood.

She frantically ordered her crew to load him onto the gurney first.

Hearing that familiar voice, I fought to force my eyes open, even though the blood had nearly sealed them shut.

The doctor running the show was none other than Audrey Hayes, my wife of ten years and the original target of my mission.

I forced my arm up, reaching out to her for help, but she only offered me a brief, hesitant glance.

"Owen's condition is critical," Audrey said. "The next ambulance is going to be here any minute, so just wait right here."

Seeing her turn to leave, I used every last ounce of strength to grab the hem of her pants, but she pulled away.

"I know all about those weird abilities of yours!" she snapped. "You aren't going to die, but Owen might."

With that, she turned and rushed into the ambulance, leaving me stranded on the freezing pavement and watching in despair as the ambulance faded into the distance.

By the time the second ambulance finally got me to the hospital over ten minutes later, I had already slipped into a coma.

Because of the delay, I had missed the critical window for survival. After undergoing an emergency surgery, I was wheeled straight into the ICU.

Deep down, I knew my time was up, but then again, I was never supposed to stay in this world anyway.

I was a mission runner who had moved through countless assignment worlds. Winning over Audrey was my very last mission, and succeeding meant I could finally return to the real world.

Audrey was just an ordinary surgeon in this world, but before she met me, she was a total magnet for troubles. Walking down the street only to have a flowerpot fall on her head or to fall into open manholes was a daily occurrence for her.

To complete my mission, I didn't hesitate to spend the points I had accumulated across other worlds just to protect her from all those disasters.

It was the most difficult mission I had ever accepted.

To balance out Audrey's streak of bad luck, I spent practically every single point I had to my name. I even put myself in harm's way for her multiple times, nearly dying on the spot on several occasions.

Nevertheless, my efforts finally paid off the day she asked me to be her boyfriend, marking the mission as complete.

The night before my scheduled departure, a massive blizzard broke out, and I told her that I had to leave.

Instead of letting me go, she drove through the blinding snow overnight just to see me, bringing a homemade meal because I had once mentioned offhand that I wanted to try her cooking.

Audrey's tears were streaming down her face as she pressed the warm lunchbox into my hands.

She said that although she didn't know where I was heading, she hoped I would always remember the taste of that meal and the person who had made it for me.

"N-No… What are you talking about? I don't know anything! It hurts! Mom, Dad, Audrey's gone crazy! You've got to help me!"Owen frantically looked toward our parents for help, but Mom and Dad didn't even seem to hear him. The two of them were focused on their own phone calls, their expressions tense."What? Are you sure? It's really the same person from back then?"The guests sensed that a new piece of drama was unfolding, and the entire chapel fell completely silent as everyone waited for my parents to speak.Suddenly, Mom looked over at Owen, let out a gut-wrenching cry, and sprinted across the room to slap him square across the face."What did we do to deserve this? How did we raise such a monster?" she screamed. "If you didn't like your brother, you could've just told us! You were only 13 years old! How could you be so cruel as to cut a deal with a human trafficker and sell your own brother out?"I froze for a moment, but deep down, the revelation didn't shock me at all.It

The woman had clearly come prepared. Ignoring the pain, she pulled a stack of photos from her pocket and flung them into the air."Take a look at this!" she cried. "These are all the photos of your husband and me in compromising positions. In fact, I was even pregnant with his child. If you don't believe me, go ahead and look for yourselves! See what your husband was really doing!"I glanced at the photos scattered across the floor, which clearly depicted intimate and compromising situations. The problem was that the person in the pictures wasn't me. Someone had swapped my face onto another man's body. The guests completely forgot they were at a funeral, rushing to pick up the photos and get a piece of the gossip."Oh, my… Everyone always said Dr. Hayes' husband was hopelessly in love with her. How could he do something like this behind her back?""Hank is such a respectable guy. It's a shame his younger son turned out like this. I heard one of his sons was kidnapped as a kid and

My spirit just stayed there, silently watching Owen slump onto the floor. He sat there in a daze for a few seconds. But then, he suddenly stood straight up and kicked his crutches to the side. From the way he walked, there was clearly nothing wrong with him.He had been faking it the entire time.If it hadn't been for him, I wouldn't have missed my first opportunity to be rescued."Damn you, Noah! I managed to kill you, and now I'm going to make sure you stay buried." Owen frowned, glaring at the hallway where the gurney had just disappeared.…My funeral was set for three days later. During that time, Owen shifted his strategy. He stopped running his mouth and trash-talking me. Instead, he grieved and cried right along with the other four.He even played the part of the perfect, doting older brother, standing in front of my casket to pray for my soul.Whenever things quieted down, he did everything he could to distract them and lift their spirits.Sure enough, aside from the

Essentially, I had set myself up as Audrey's savior to sweep her off her feet and marry her.No wonder she had spent our entire marriage hating my guts and making snide remarks, constantly accusing me of faking life-or-death situations just to trick her into staying with me.But when it came down to it, neither Audrey nor my parents had ever trusted me.If they had just come forward, laid their cards on the table, and asked me face-to-face, things might have been different. But not a single one of them ever did.Watching Audrey break down like this made Mom panic. Shaking like a leaf, she shuffled closer and tentatively reached out to feel my hand, only for the ice-cold skin to make her shriek in horror."Noah! Noah, stop scaring me. Why are your hands so cold?" Mom screamed, her voice dissolving into uncontrollable sobs.Seeing Mom's reaction, Dad quickly rushed over to check on me, too. He steeled himself to press a finger to my neck, checking for a pulse. The second he reali

Ethan was young, but he wasn't stupid. The way Audrey and I looked completely terrified him.He froze, staring blankly for a few seconds, before suddenly bursting into loud, hysterical sobs and running over to grip my hand tightly."Dad! Dad, wake up! Please, I want you to make that pot roast again!"I watched everything unfold in silence. My stone-cold heart was far past the point of feeling a single spark of emotion.Right on cue, the mechanical chime rang in my mind."Congratulations, Host. They've started crying for you, and their regret meter has risen to 20%. It looks like you'll hit your target in no time."I shook my head, not holding out much hope.Ethan was only reacting out of pure fright. The second Owen came over to comfort him, Ethan would completely forget about me. It looked like I was never going to get the chance to return to the real world after all."Audrey, what's taking you so long? What kind of stunt is he pulling this time?"Mom and Dad walked in righ

The doctor's words stunned the room into silence."What do you mean he's dead?" Audrey finally asked, her voice flat as she broke the eerie quiet."Look, Dr. Hayes, I'm a busy woman. I chose to track you down myself because he's your husband. But you need to go see for yourself."Without waiting for an answer, the doctor turned on her heel and sprinted back to her shift."Audrey, this has to be another one of Noah's stunts," Owen chimed in, unable to hide the smug gleam in his eyes despite putting on his best sympathetic face as he talked Audrey down."He's probably just throwing a tantrum because Mom and Dad are treating me so well. He used to pull pointless crap like this all the time, so who knows what he's up to this time—"But Audrey's face had paled, and she shot to her feet.Ignoring Owen completely, she dropped the half-peeled apple from her hands and stormed out of the room."She's lying," she muttered to herself as she sprinted down the hallway to find me.
