Horses.

I stayed still, listening. The sound was faint, coming from far away. Horses, they were moving fast. Their hooves struck the ground in the distance, steady, sharp, getting closer.

My heart started beating faster. I got out of bed and went to the window, pulling back the curtain slightly. The courtyard below was dark and empty, but I could hear the horses getting closer.

I panicked. The hunters?

Maybe just travelers, I told myself. But I knew it wasn't travelers. Not at this hour.

My throat began to itch. I coughed hard, trying not to panic. The smoke was already slipping through the cracks of the door, rising fast.

"Help!" I shouted, running to the door and banging on it with both fists. "Help me!"

I grabbed the handle and pulled. I pulled harder, hitting my shoulder against the wood.

It was stuck.

The smoke was stronger and thick now. I could barely see across the room. My chest burned.

"Help!" I screamed again, pounding frantically on the door.

Carlos’s arms felt like steel bands around her as he carried Amelia back to the bed, her body limp but her pulse thundering against his chest. She had barely absorbed his words—her body found by the creeks, a month lost in a fog she couldn’t remember—when her knees buckled beneath her. He had caught her before she hit the ground, and now he set her gently on the mattress, his jaw tight, his eyes shadowed with something far darker than pity.“You shouldn’t move yet,” he said, voice low, controlled. Too controlled. “Your body is still weak.”“I’m not weak,” she whispered, defiance flashing in her dull, tired eyes. She hated the sound of her own voice—shaky, thin, like someone else’s.Carlos crouched in front of her, one hand braced on the mattress beside her thigh. The position forced her to meet his gaze. His presence was overwhelming, so close, his scent of cedar and storm wrapping around her until it was the only thing she could breathe.“You’re pale as death,” he said roughly. “Don’

Carlos lowered her onto the mattress like she was made of glass, his arms lingering as if her skin burned him and yet tethered him. Amelia’s body was trembling, not only from weakness but from the weight of his words—a month… by the creeks… dead, and yet not dead. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She couldn’t process it all. Her chest rose and fell too fast, and when she pressed her palm against the sheets to sit up again, her knees buckled beneath her. Carlos’s hand shot out, pinning her shoulder gently but firmly back against the pillows.“Stop fighting me,” he said, voice low, rough, and too close. His scent wrapped around her, heavy, intoxicating. “Your body is barely holding together. You move like this, and you’ll collapse.”“I already feel collapsed,” she whispered. The words punched a hole through his composure. He had to clench his jaw, his fangs threatening to show. His wolf stirred, prowling under his skin, restless and hungry—not for blood, but for the maddening pul

My heart raced so fast I thought Lars would hear it from wherever he was. The key bit into my palm, a tiny shard of hope wrapped in cold metal. My wrists ached, raw flesh torn open by silver, but pain meant nothing now. I had a way out. With trembling hands, I shoved the key into the lock binding my chains. It scraped, refused at first, but then—click. One cuff fell open, clattering against the stone floor. I bit back a sob of relief as I freed the other, blood rushing into my stiff arms.I was free. But freedom in a cage meant nothing if I couldn’t get past the door.I crept forward, slipping the key into the lock. My ears strained for footsteps, breath shallow. The tumblers groaned—then another click. The door gave way with a soft creak.Every instinct screamed at me to run, but I forced myself to move carefully down the narrow corridor. The walls stank of damp and iron, torchlight flickering across mossy stone. Each shadow looked like it wanted to swallow me.Then I heard it. Voice

The silver chains cut into my wrists. Blood ran down my arms, but I kept pulling. I had to get out of here."Let me out!" I screamed at the empty room. "Let me out!"Nobody answered. I could only hear my own breathing and the chains scraping against the wall.My wrists hurt badly. My shoulders ached. But I kept pulling at the chains. They had to break.Blood dripped on the floor. I felt dizzy. The room started spinning around me.Then everything went dark. When I opened my eyes, I was somewhere else. I stood in a field full of flowers. The sun was warm on my face. A gentle wind blew through the grass."Amelia."I turned around. My heart jumped. Mia was walking toward me through the flowers. "Mia!" I ran to her and hugged her tight. She felt real in my arms. "Oh, Mia, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry for saying you were selfish, please don't leave me again."She hugged me back. "It's okay, Amelia. It's okay."I pulled back to look at her face. Tears ran down my cheeks. "I understand now."Mia

The morning sun cast shadows through the barred window when I heard familiar footsteps echoing down the stone hallway. My heart pounded against my ribs as the heavy key turned in the lock. Lars entered, carrying a breakfast tray as if this was any ordinary morning between us."Good morning, Amelia," he said, setting the wooden tray on the small table with deliberate care. His voice was calm, almost cheerful, as though he hadn't just destroyed my last hope of freedom the night before.I remained seated on the narrow bed, watching him with careful eyes. The iron chains around my ankles clinked softly against each other as I shifted my weight. The metal was cold and heavy."Lars, please," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'll be the person you want me to be. I'll stop fighting you, stop trying to escape. Just let me go."He paused in arranging the items on the tray and looked at me. Then he laughed.“Let you go? After all the trouble I've gone through to get you here?" He shook

A soft knock at my door woke me from restless sleep. "Come in," I called softly.Martha entered carrying a breakfast tray. She looked around the doorway carefully before closing the door behind her. "I brought you some breakfast," she said, setting the tray on the small table by the window.I climbed out of bed and walked over to her."Thank you," I said, watching her face. "Did you... did you think about what we discussed last night?"Martha nodded and pulled a chair closer to the table. "Sit," she whispered. "We need to talk, but we must be quiet."I sat across from her, my hands folded tightly in my lap. Martha's eyes darted to the door again before she leaned closer."I've been working for this pack for twenty-three years," she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've cleaned these rooms, served these meals, and heard secrets that I kept to myself all this time."My pulse quickened. Martha's hands trembled as she reached across the table and took mine. "Amelia, Lars is no
