"Everything is hopeless," I said, pulling my hair back into a braid. My fingers worked through the strands, but my mind was elsewhere. "I'm tired of everyone dictating how my life goes. I feel so lost and frustrated."

Carlos stood by the door, watching me with those warm eyes that always made my heart skip. He was handsome, strong shoulders and arms, gentle hands, and eyes that held nothing but love when he looked at me.

I moved closer to him, drawn by the comfort he always gave me. "I'm so lucky to have you in my life," I whispered, wrapping my hands around his neck.

He pressed his forehead against mine. "I'm the lucky one," he said softly.

We stared into each other's eyes. In that moment, everything else faded away, the hunters, the journal, Mia's memories, the fear and anxiety that followed me everywhere. There was only Carlos and the way he made me feel safe.

He leaned down and kissed me, rough and desperate. I kissed him back just as hard, pouring all my fear and frustration into

  • THE ALPHA'S BETRAYAL   CHAPTER FORTY-THREE - DINNER AND INSECURITY

The manor was large and cold.Arlene led us through the grand entrance hall. The ceiling stretched high above us, painted with scenes of wolves running through forests. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, casting warm light over the polished floors. The air smelled of something sweet.“This way,” she said, her voice smooth. “Let me show you around.”We followed in silence."This is the main hall," Arlene said, her voice echoing in the large space. "The family has lived here for over two hundred years."Her arm was still linked through Carlos’s as she walked. I followed behind them, watching how she leaned into him when she spoke, how her fingers traced patterns on his sleeve."The dining room is through here," she continued, leading us into a room with a long wooden table that could seat at least twenty people. "And the library is just beyond that door."We walked up a grand staircase with curved rails."The guest rooms are on this floor," Arlene said when we reached the top. “

The forest was quiet again, like nothing had happened. We walked in silence after the wolves disappeared. None of us spoke about what had just happened. We were all too tired, too shaken. My legs felt heavy with each step, and I could see the exhaustion in everyone's faces. But inside, my mind was racing. The wolves had been afraid of me. Fear twisted in my stomach. If the wolves could smell me, if they reacted that way, it meant the potion was wearing off."Carlos," I said quietly, grabbing his arm. "The wolves. They smelled me. That means the potion is wearing off, doesn't it?"He looked at me with tired eyes. "It was probably something else.""But what if it's not?" I whispered. "What if they can smell me now? What if the hunters are already following our scent?"Carlos stopped walking and turned to face me. He put his hands on my shoulders, his touch warm and steady."Don't think about that now," he said softly. "We're almost there. We'll be safe soon. This territory is out of bou

The morning came too soon. I woke up with a heavy feeling pressing down on my chest. Something was wrong.Carlos was already awake, sitting by the window and looking out at the trees."Did you sleep at all?" I asked, sitting up on the narrow bed."A little," he said, but I could see the exhaustion in his eyes.Rowan was packing our belongings and the things we needed into a small bag. Ares tied the horses to a tree."Are you ready?" Rowan asked, throwing the bag over his shoulder.I nodded, but my hands were shaking. The feeling in my gut grew stronger.Rowan came to stand beside me. "Trust your instincts," he said quietly. "They've kept you alive this long.""I know," I said, trying to take a deep breath, trying to calm the fear rising in my chest. We left the cabin. The forest was thick. The trees here were different from the ones near the inn. Their branches twisted together above us, blocking out most of the sunlight. The path was narrow and rough, barely wide enough for us to wal

We rode deeper into the woods, far from the burning inn and the hunters who had tracked us down. The trees grew thicker around us, their branches reaching out. I could still smell smoke in my hair, still feel the heat on my skin.My heart was still racing from the chase. Every sound made me jump. Every shadow looked like a hunter ready to attack."How much further?" Carlos asked, his voice tight with worry."Not far," Ares said, guiding his horse through the narrow path. The trees closed in around us. I had never been this deep in the woods before. The moonlight barely reached through the thick canopy above. Everything felt strange. Finally, we reached a small clearing. In the center stood a tiny cabin. Inside, the house was small, just one room with a narrow bed, a table, and a stone fireplace that hadn’t been lit. Dust danced in the air.Carlos stepped in first, checking every corner. Rowan followed, setting his bag down with a grunt. I stayed near the door, unsure."This is where y

  • THE ALPHA'S BETRAYAL   CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE - SCARS AND GRIEF

I was eighteen again, standing in a room in my nightgown. The smell of burning wood filled my nose. My chest tightened, and I couldn’t breathe. The air smoke filled my nose, thick, bitter and choking. The heat pressed against my skin. I could hear the crackling of flames eating through everything I had ever known. "Mum!" I coughed and called out. "Dad!" But I heard nothing but the loud crackle of wood burning. I ran into the hallway. The heat hit me in the face like a slap. The flames were crawling along the walls, bright and alive. I was screaming, but my voice felt so small. Then I saw them,my parents. Dad’s face was covered with soot. Mum was crying, trying to push me back. “Go, Amelia! Go!” “I won’t leave you!” I cried, shaking my head. They shoved me through the broken window. My arms got cut on the glass. I remember the sting. They were so close. So close to making it out. Then a beam fell from the ceiling, blocking their path. The fire rose higher, hungry and wil

  • THE ALPHA'S BETRAYAL   CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT - FIRE AND HORSES

I couldn't sleep. I was tossing and turning in the bed. I felt restless, like something wasn’t right. Sweat clung to my forehead, even though the night was cold. I sat up slowly, my heart beating too fast.Something was wrong.I lay down again, trying to find a comfortable position. Carlos slept peacefully beside me, his breathing slow and steady.I envied him. How could he sleep so easily with everything happening? Then I heard it.Horses.I stayed still, listening. The sound was faint, coming from far away. Horses, they were moving fast. Their hooves struck the ground in the distance, steady, sharp, getting closer. My heart started beating faster. I reached over and shook Carlos’s shoulder.“Wake up,” I whispered urgently. “Do you hear that?”Carlos groaned softly, still half-asleep. “What is it...?”“Horses,” I said again, firmer this time. “They’re coming.”Carlos sat up quickly, suddenly wide awake. He tilted his head, listening. After a moment, he nodded. “I hear them too.”We bo
