CHAPTER 5

(Séraphine’s POV)

I didn’t sleep that night.

I just lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling of the room they gave me. It was too quiet. Too clean. It didn’t smell like home — it smelled like control. Every piece of furniture screamed power, and every corner reminded me whose house I was in.

Cullen Blackthorne.

The man who burned my world.

And now, I was under his roof — his “mistress” on paper, his captive in truth.

I pressed my hands over my chest, feeling the steady beat of my heart. I hated that I was alive while my people weren’t. I hated that the reason I was breathing was because he wanted me to.

But I wasn’t staying alive for him.

No. I had my own plan.

If he thought I accepted the offer to survive, he was wrong. I accepted it to get closer — to learn his weaknesses, to find the cracks in his armor. The moment I found them, I’d strike where it hurt the most.

The knock on my door came early.

“Miss Séraphine,” a guard said from outside. “The Alpha wants to see you.”

Of course, he did.

I took a deep breath, tied my hair up, and slipped on the black mask he demanded I wear. The moment it touched my face, anger burned through me again. It wasn’t just cloth — it was a reminder that he owned my freedom, even my face.

Two guards escorted me down the long hallway. The walls were lined with paintings of the Phoenix Pack’s past Alphas — all men who looked like they were born to rule and destroy.

When we reached the office, Cullen was already there, sitting behind his desk, his eyes on some papers. He didn’t look up when I entered.

“You called,” I said.

His eyes finally met mine — calm, cold, unreadable. “Sit.”

I stayed standing. “I prefer to stand.”

A faint smirk touched his lips. “Always difficult.”

“Always honest.”

He leaned back in his chair. “You signed the contract.”

“I did.”

“Then you understand the rules.”

“I understand them,” I said. “Doesn’t mean I respect them.”

He raised a brow. “Careful, Séraphine. You’re walking on fire.”

“Then maybe you shouldn’t have invited me into the flames.”

He chuckled softly — that deep, controlled laugh that made the air feel thicker. “Tell me something,” he said. “Why did you agree? I know you hate me. You could’ve chosen death.”

I looked straight at him. “Maybe I wanted to see what kind of man kills hundreds and still sleeps at night.”

His jaw tightened, just slightly. “Careful what you look for.”

“I already found it,” I said. “A monster with a pulse.”

For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The tension between us felt sharp enough to cut.

Then he stood, walked around the desk, and stopped in front of me. I didn’t move. He was close enough that I could feel his warmth, smell the faint trace of whiskey and smoke on his skin.

“You’ll learn to behave,” he said quietly. “You’ll learn what happens when you test me.”

“And you’ll learn I don’t scare easily.”

Something flickered in his eyes — interest, maybe even respect. Then he stepped back. “You’ll have your own room, your own meals, your own guard detail. I’ll give you what you need, not what you want. Stay out of trouble, and you’ll keep your privileges.”

I laughed softly. “Privileges? You mean captivity with furniture?”

He smirked. “You can call it what you like.”

“I call it pathetic,” I said, turning to leave.

“Séraphine,” he said, voice low but firm. I froze.

When I looked back, his gaze locked with mine — strong, steady, dark.

“Whatever game you think you’re playing,” he said, “remember who wrote the rules.”

I smiled under the mask. “Then you better remember who breaks them.”

I walked out before he could reply.

That night, I stared out the window of my room. The forest beyond the mansion looked peaceful, but I knew monsters hid in peace too.

Somewhere out there, a few survivors from my pack might still be alive — if I could find them, if I could reach them.

So I made myself a promise.

I’d play his game.

I’d act like the obedient captive he wanted.

I’d wear the mask.

Smile when he watched.

Obey when he ordered.

But inside, I’d be waiting.

Watching.

Planning.

Because someday soon, the Alpha who thought he owned me…

would fall to the woman he spared.

(Cullen's pov) I stroked her hair in place, reassuring her that she was safe and she needed no reason to be worried. "Seraphine, you're part of my pack now and you belong here. I never turn my back on my pack members because my duty as an alpha is to serve and protect them, including you." I said these reassuring words to calm her nerves down. I was expecting a reply or at least a reaction, but sadly, I didn't get any. She looked at me, eyes filled with worry, and she didn't say another word, but instead she turned around and faced the exit, leaving me alone in the training grounds. Everywhere went silent again, and I could hear the sound of the wind. I sat down on a stone resting on the floor nearby. I was already tired and lost in my thoughts to think of resuming the trainings. I began rethinking, and retracing my steps. All my major decisions and how they might have affected me either positive or negative. Did I make a bad decision by allowing Seraphine to stay alive? D

  • THE ALPHA'S MISTRESS    Chapter 15

Cullen's povI kept replaying her words long after the environment went silent.“He’s alive.”That was all she gave me. Nothing more. No explanation. No name. No clue. She just shut down, locked herself behind that cold stubborn mask she wears when she wants to torture me.I tried to ask again on the walk back inside. What is alive, Séraphine? Who?But she didn’t look at me. It was like she’d folded into herself, protecting something I wasn’t allowed to see.By the time we reached the room, her silence was a wall I couldn’t break.I cleaned the cut on her hand even though she kept mumbling she was fine. Her eyes were distant, unfocused, like she was somewhere else. Somewhere dark.“Séraphine,” I tried again, softer this time. “Talk to me.”Nothing.Only the rise and fall of her breath. When I finished bandaging her, I told her to rest and started toward the door. That was when her fingers shot out and grabbed my wrist.“Don’t… leave.”Her voice cracked in a way that punched straight t

(Cullen's pov)The rogue landed in a crouch, hunched, trembling, eyes glowing a poison shade of red. His claws scraped the grounds. He wasn’t here for the pack.He was here for her.Seraphine.And he knew exactly where to look.Information spreads quickly.I stepped between them so fast my body ached. My wolf was already clawing under my skin, begging to burst through .“You’re bold,” I said, voice low. “Breaking into an Alpha’s territory”The rogue laughed — a broken, choking giggle.“I’m not here for you, what use does a fallen alpha has to offer us .”His gaze slid past me. Straight to Séraphine. Her breath hitched. It was small. But I heard it.I didn’t hold back.My body shifted halfway, muscles splitting, hands turning to sharp claws. I caught him mid-air and slammed him into the wall so hard dust rained from the ceiling. The rogue snarled and clawed at my arm. His nails dug into my skin, scraping bone, but I didn’t feel the pain. My wolf drowned it out with one command:Protect

  • THE ALPHA'S MISTRESS     Chapter 13

Séraphine’s POVMy legs felt like they didn’t belong to me anymore. Everything was blurry—walls, faces, the ceiling light sliding across my vision as Cullen pulled me through the hallway. His grip was firm, almost bruising, but there was something shaky underneath it. Like he was holding onto me because letting go would break something inside him.He didn’t speak. He didn’t even look back at me.His shoulders were stiff, his breath sharp, and every guard we passed stepped out of the way immediately. The air around him was heavy—Alpha-heavy—the kind that made your instincts bow even if you didn’t want to.He pushed the infirmary door open with too much force and shut it behind us.“Sit down.”His voice carried a low growl beneath it.I stayed standing. “Cullen, I can walk. I’m fine.”He turned slowly. His eyes weren’t calm. They were storm-dark, the kind that warned you to tread softly.“You’re bleeding,” he said. “And shaking.”I swallowed. “I’m not.”He moved closer. His fingers brus

(SÉRAPHINE'S pov)He grinned as he dragged me forcefully away from the balcony.Cullen moved so fast the air trembled. I heard bones crack behind me—Cullen’s shift starting—but he hadn’t reached us yet.The rogue’s other hand slid behind my neck, pulling me close like he wanted Cullen to see.“Your father isn’t finished with you,” he whispered, voice shaking with madness. My blood stopped. He was lying. He had to be.My father was dead.I witnessed him dying. The rogue leaned closer, fingers tightening—Then he said it:“Your father left something behind. And I’m here to take you to him.”Everything inside me froze.Cullen roared behind us, the shift exploding through him—And the rogue dragged me back toward the stairs.(Cullen's pov)The shift tore through me before my mind caught up. Muscles cracked, form changed ,heat flooded my skin until fur burst through. My vision sharpened, tunneling straight to the rogue’s hand clamped around Séraphine’s wrist. He was dragging her backward d

  • THE ALPHA'S MISTRESS    CHAPTER 11

(Séraphine’s POV)I noticed something was off the moment I stepped into the west hallway with Cullen dragging me with him as if I stole something precious to him.The air felt tight, like everyone was holding their breath. Guards were moving fast, whispering into their earpieces. Boots hitting the floor. Doors opening and closing with force.Chaos was all around.Something was happening outside and It wasn't the good type, everyone around was tensed.I drifted closer to the balcony rail, staying where the shadows covered me and couldn't be easily seen,as Cullen instructed me to.A cluster of guards were dragging a man across the yard. He was filthy, scraped up, and breathing like he had been running for hours. He was like an escaped prisoner or something.A rogue probably. My stomach flipped when I saw the familiar tattoo stretched across his arm.He wasn’t just any rogue. He belonged to my father’s old pack.He jerked against the guards and lifted his head. His eyes locked onto the b
