Sunlight spilled into the room through the open curtains, warm and very bright, kissing my skin. I

blinked against the light, my body sore in the best and worst ways.

Between last night’s... release and Darius’ late-night visit, sleep had taken its time to come. And

when it finally did, it was filled with dreams—vivid, heated, and all of them starring the Alpha I

was supposed to hate.

I groaned, throwing an arm over my eyes.

Why did his voice keep echoing in my head?

'I just came to check up on you.' he had said.

Check up on my ass.

That man had no business being that honest. That soft. It wasn’t fair. He wasn’t supposed to

check on me like he actually cared. He wasn’t supposed to look at me like I was more than a

burden, more than some arranged mate he was stuck with.

And I definitely wasn’t supposed to like it.

A knock came at the door.

I froze, heart skipping. “Darius?” I called, sitting up quickly and adjusting the neckline of my

nightgown.
