We were three blocks from the facility when the vehicle exploded.

Not our vehicle. The one carrying Richard's data chip. The backup Arnold had sent ahead.

"NO!" Arnold screamed into the radio. "Team Two, respond! RESPOND!"

Static.

Then a voice. Familiar. Impossible.

"Hello, Arnold. Looking for something?"

Richard.

Not dying. Not dead. Very much conscious and talking.

"How—Dr. Morrison said you had minutes—"

"Dr. Morrison works for whoever pays most. Currently, that is me. Always has been." Richard's laugh was bitter. "Did you really think I was dying? The blood was real. The wound was real. But I have been preparing for betrayal since birth. Synthetic blood packets. Trauma makeup. Performance art perfected over years."

"You sabotaged the extraction," I said flatly. "You killed your own team."

"They were not my team. They were mercenaries Miranda hired to infiltrate your operation. I just activated them early." A pause. "And now I have the data chip. Four billion dollars. Marcus's comp

We were loading Hope into the car when Arnold's tablet started screaming alerts."What the hell?" He pulled it up. His face went white. "The chapel explosion. The blast pattern. It is wrong.""Wrong how?" Damien demanded."Professional demolition. Controlled. Designed to create maximum chaos with minimum casualties. The fire department found shaped charges. Military grade. This was not Richard's dead man's switch. This was someone else's plan."My blood went cold. "Marcus.""Marcus is dead. We watched him die—""Did we? Or did we watch what he wanted us to see?" I grabbed the tablet. Pulled up the footage from the warehouse where Marcus supposedly died. "Look at the body. Really look."Damien zoomed in. "The face is wrong. Slightly off. Like—""Like a mask. A prosthetic. Like Elizabeth used. Like Victor's impostor used." I felt pieces clicking together. "Marcus Ashford did not die in that warehouse. He faked his death. Let everyone think his empire was destroyed while he rebuilt in se

I stood in the bridal suite wearing a dress I hated, preparing for a wedding that would never happen."Five minutes." Cassidy adjusted my veil. Underneath the white lace, she strapped a knife to my thigh. "Damien has Sarah. Collar is defused. She is safe.""And Hope?""With Arnold. Three miles away. Armed escort. Richard's men will not touch her." Cassidy's eyes met mine in the mirror. "You do not have to do this. We can still run—""Running is over. Today we end this. Permanently." I checked the small gun hidden in my bouquet. "Is Damien in position?""Sniper nest. Three hundred yards. Clear line of sight to the altar." She handed me an earpiece. "He will take the shot the moment Richard says 'I do.' Clean. Final. Over."I inserted the earpiece. Damien's voice immediately: "Flora. You look beautiful. And terrifying.""Only one of those is intentional.""Both work." A pause. "If this goes wrong—if Richard suspects—get down. I will light up that entire chapel to protect you.""I know.

"That is impossible. You died. I saw the body—""You saw Thomas's first attempt. A body he thought was me. But I survived the warehouse explosion. Been in a coma for two months. Woke up three days ago." Damien's voice was rough but real. "Sarah kept me hidden. Protected. Now I am coming to get you and Hope.""Hope is not even here anymore. Miranda moved her—""To the harbor district. Warehouse Twelve. I have been tracking Miranda's movements. She thinks she is invisible. She is not." Static crackled. "I am five minutes out. Can you move?"I looked at my restraints. At Richard unconscious on the floor. At Dr. Morrison watching me with calculating eyes."I am chained to a bed with a bullet wound in my shoulder and leg. Moving is challenging.""Then I am coming to you. Hold tight."The line went dead."He will die trying to breach this facility," Dr. Morrison said calmly. "Miranda has eighty men. Military-grade security. Damien Cross might be dangerous, but he is not a one-man army.""Th

I had been Miranda's prisoner for three days when Richard walked through the door. Not dead. Not even wounded. Just alive."Hello, Flora." He looked exhausted. Haunted. But very much breathing."You are supposed to be dead. I watched you die—""You watched someone die. My body double. A man I hired six months ago for exactly this contingency." Richard moved closer to my hospital bed. The restraints bit into my wrists as I tried to pull away. "I needed Miranda to believe I was dead. To think she had won. So she would get sloppy.""This is another trick—""No trick. Just desperation." He pulled up a chair. Sat heavily. "Everything Miranda told you about Damien—about Thomas Kane pretending to be him—it is true. I verified it. DNA. Dental records. Damien Cross died in the warehouse explosion two months ago. You have been living with an imposter since."The words cut deeper hearing them twice. "Why are you here?""Because I need your help. And you need mine." Richard's voice cracked. "Mira

Miranda's men closed in like wolves sensing blood."On your knees. Both of you." She gestured casually. Like we were inconveniences, not people. "Hands behind your heads."I knelt. Richard hesitated."Do it," I hissed. "We need to buy time—""Time for what? Your backup is not coming. Damien stayed with Hope. Arnold is monitoring from three miles away. Cassidy is securing perimeters." Miranda walked closer. "You came alone because I knew you would. Maternal guilt is so predictable.""My mother is dead. You lied—""Of course I lied. But you still came. That is what matters." She pulled out a syringe. "This will keep you compliant. Alive. Useful. Just conscious enough to provide biometric access when I need it."Richard moved suddenly. Grabbed a guard's weapon. Fired twice. Not at Miranda's men.At me.Pain exploded through my shoulder. My leg. I hit the concrete hard."FLORA!" Damien's voice in my earpiece. He had been listening the entire time.Richard stood over me. Gun steady. Expres
