Chapter 11: Chased: Encounter on the Streets

Margret looked on in helplessness as Caleb stood in front of a little girl sitting beneath a tree. The teenager raised her head, squinting her eyes at the intruder's face, which was barely visible due to the bright sunlight.

Caleb reached out and knocked the bread the girl was eating to the ground. The girl stared at the fallen bread with regret and sorrow. "Why are you eating spoiled bread? Why don't you go home and ask your mommy for food?" Caleb spoke to the girl with a smile.

Tears welled up in the girl's eyes, and she cried, "That is the only food I've eaten for days. My mom is sick, and no one wants to employ me because I'm underage. A kind woman gave me the spoiled bread, and now you've thrown it away."

Caleb frowned, realizing the situation was direr than he thought. He took a deep breath and said, "Here, take this." Caleb held out a wad of money, and the girl's eyes widened in shock.
