查看更多The chlorine stung my nose a familiar smell that I don’t even register anymore. The university pool was full of chaotic swimmers having their afternoon practices.Shouts echoed, rhythmic splashes of water from the swimmers diving in and friends helping each other everyone wanted to break a record. All I could do was to sir there and watch alone and listen to all the conversations from all swimmers.
“Karl’s gonna crush it at regionals no doubt” Mark shouted with a lot of confidence try to deafen my ears
My fingers tightened around my pants as I pretended to stretch as Karl walked past me but my eyes couldn’t help but stare at his mysterious face,he was like a god in this pool, the golden boy of Blackwood University. Each stroke was wokeover,he laughed gently with other swimmers but didn’t exchange in deep conversations with them but his charisma kept drawing them.Larl was everything I wasn’t the golden boy of the school, very confident, speaks when he needs to and popular.Life looked easy for him and I envied it.Me? I was just a random dude Liam, who spent most of the time warming the bench instead of being in the pool like others. And Joe he was getting close to me!!,
“Hey Liam, you gonna try out for the relay team
This year?”
I looked up it was Ben, a friendly team mate .He was grinning down at me.
“Nahh Im gonna sit this one out man”
“You should you go, you’ve got the speed man. At some point you have to show the world how good you are ”
He dapped me on the shoulder then turned away as Karl approached. “Shit”
I quickly got up and bumped into him.
“Sorry!!” I yelped my cheeks burning
“It’s okay, you alright mate?!”.His voice sounded warm and concerned, his eyes usually bright and sparkling blue, seemed to burn with an unusual intensity. He gets closer and all I can smell is his scent, was it musk or chlorine. My heart was racing.
The energy in the locker room seeme Im d different from that of the pool, though sweat from thr bodies lingered in the air but something felt different so I carried my belongings- a towel, a water bottle, with a copy of twenty thousand league under the Sea. I was so eager to escape back to the dorm and be on my bed. As I looked towards the pool, I overheard Karl speaking to the Coach from a distance.
“….just need a little minute,Coach.Feeling a little…off.His voice was so strained,tight with an emotion I couldn’t quite place.
“Dont pressure yourself to much Karl”
Coach responded with a pay on Karl’s back. He sounded so concerned. “Regional’s are next week.Get some rest.”
I frowned.Karl’s eyes were to bright, his smile was to tight, his breathing to heavy! It was like he was fighting something or someone fighting him.
Ohhh Shit!!!
I smacked my forehead.Where’s my lucky swim cap.Mom knitted that cap for me years ago.A ridiculous piece, but funny enough I couldn’t swim without it.I turned back to checl if anyone was inside the lock room. The team had left the room leaving the room silent.
I moved towards the room but the silence broke with a series of ragged breathing coming from far end of the room.Strained breaths, like someone fighting for air. My heart started racing, was someone dying,I thought very worried.
I moved towards the direction of the sound,my footsteps making noise in the stillness but I kept going regardless. As I got to the last row of the lockers,I heard another strange sound,a low, metallic groan. It quickly sent shivers down my spine,my hands were sweaty and shaky.I kept hearing metals bending and twist sounded so strange.
Fear and curiousity played with me,Something was wrong for sure.
I pushed opened the door to the end.My heart racing snd my hands and feet’s cold as ever.
I couldn’t believe what I saw with my two eyes.
It was Karl!!!
He stood with his back to me, his body was positioned in an impossible strange position. His muscles writhed beneath his skin, it was shifting and bulging in a way that question human anatomy. His spine pointing out sharp ridges like a jagged mountain. His hands spread against the steel locker, were tearing through the metal as if it were paper, leaving long and brutal marks.
The smell of blood lingered in the air….amd something else.Something strange.Something predatory.Something thats making me feel weird….
Then he turned….
His eyes burned, flames on his eyes, inhuman feral glow that pierced the shadows. His face was distorted in a strange way,his body elongated, his mouth twisted with a snarl that revealed teeth far too long, far too sharp.
“Stay….Away Karl” he growled, his voice sounded so harsh very far from how a human’s voice sound. At the same time it seemed like he couldn’t resist me.Those words words slipped from his mouth “stay….away” smelling my neck lile he couldn’t resist me.I could feel his breath on my shoulder,my heart was racing non-stop,hands were shaking and feet’s were cold.
Karl was a monster!!!
I just started running,I ran so fast without turning my back breathing so fast.
The applause was..Slow.Calculated.Almost mocking. All that my head could tell me was run,but my legs refused to move an inch. The silver-haired man stepped out from behind the ancient Celtic stone as though he had been standing there the whole time. His dark mysterious cloak brushing against the grass, and despite looking no older than his thirties, there was something ancient in his eyes.Something mysterious Something tired.Karl stepped in front of me immediately.“Don't come any closer.”The stranger stopped.A faint smile crossed his face.“If I meant either of you harm,” he said “you wouldn't have made it this far.”The air between them grew thicker.“Do you know him.” Karl asked.“I've spent four solid centuried searching continuously for him.”My stomach clenched.“Searching for who?”His grey silver eyes remained fixed on me.“You.”I was confused.“I think you're making a mistake,I'm not the one you're looking for sir.”Without any response,no words, he simply stared deep
The first wolf pounced on him.“Karl…karl!” I shouted. He pushed me backwards just as the creature’s claws sliced through the air where my whole body had been a heartbeat earlier. The impact sent Karl tumbling across the silver grass, but he was already back on his feets before I could blink.“Run,very fast.” he yelled.“No,I’m not leaving you!”“Liam, leave now!”We heard another growl echoed through the forest. Then another growl. Then anotherAnother.A lot of golden eyes appeared between the trees, one pair after another, until I lost count. They surrounded us in absolute silence, moving through the silver mist like shadows with beating hearts. My pulse slammed against my ribs. There had to be at least twenty of them everywhere. The Black-Antlered Guardian stepped forward, placing itself between us and the approaching pack. The silver dust drifting from its antlers thickened, sparkling beneath the moonlight like falling stars.Every wolf froze. For a brief moment, no one could move.Th
The creature didn't move at all.It kept staring at us in a scary way.The silver dust kept drifting from its antlers dripping to the groundIt was beautiful and terrifying at the same time.Karl moved slowly to me shielding me with his body.“Don't stare, don't look into its eyes.”I felt a burning sensation down my throat.“Help…me,I can't”The creature kept staring at me. It felt like it was reading me.Every thought in my head. It was studying my moves.Waiting.Then I heard the voice again.Inside my mind. You carry what has been stolen.A sharp pain exploded behind my eyes.I staggered backward, clutching my head.“No...that's not true?"Karl grabbed me before I could fall."Liam!"The forest vanishedI heard his voice echoeing. For a split second. I wasn't standing in the Moon Realm anymore.I was somewhere else.A grand hall stood before me in old white carvings and with white pebbles that shimmered beneath the sky.Towering sculpted wolf creatures and strange human like statue
Those words from the Order of Silver Knights the words couldn't leave his head long after Karl stopped speaking.Silence became dominant in the room, none of us spoke to each other. The treehouse suddenly felt too small for both of us. The warmth from the lantern couldn't stop the fear from creeping over my skin like a cold hand. Every old map spread across the table, every newspaper hanging on the walls, every strange artifact scattered across the room seemed to be staring at me.I decided to speak."So... everything you've told me is real?"Karl adjusted his chair and folded his arms. There wasn't even the slightest hint of a smile on his face that showed doubt."I wish its not true.""You expect me to believe there's another entirely different world thats next to ours? Also your family have been guardians, protecting the realm for generations and people are hunting you because of who you are?""Liam I understand if you can't believe it,never expected you to believe though," he replied
The wooden chair behind me fell as he said those words.Silence in the air “my help” those words echoed in my head.“How do you expect me to help,I never knew about this!!” I said my voice very low. “I’m just a history major who spends so much time in the archives making research.I can’t fight whate
The door shut behind Karl, leaving me standing alone in the room with myself and my thoughts ,the silence became heavier than the cold night breeze. My eyes remained on the same position he stood, every word replaying in my head, every gesture he made-but out of all the main thing that marvelled me w
