Ryley

"Where's his office?" I demanded, arms crossed, glaring at his beta.

"What?" Luca looked genuinely confused.

"Mom, don't," Channing cautioned quietly.

"Where is Mr. Orion's office?" I asked again.

"First floor, last door on the left," Luca answered.

I thanked him and stormed into the pack house. I've been around alphas for half my life hell, I was raised by one. I wasn't about to put up with his attitude or anyone else's. His anger made no sense, either. I don't work for him. I work for Mr. Miller. Who the hell does he think he is?

"A very sexy alpha," my wolf, Lily, purred.

I was fuming by the time I reached his door and pounded on it.

"I wish you'd let him pound into us instead," Lily added.

"Will you stop?" I muttered under my breath.

"Come in," I heard him call, and I stormed inside.

"Yes, Miss Halliwell," he said, smug, leaning back behind his desk. My wolf was purring like a cat for no good reason.

If I hadn't been so furious, I might have noticed his gorgeous amber eyes, the well-trimmed beard, the hard lines of muscle under his shirt. I didn't.

"Liar," Lily huffed.

"Mr. Orion, I'd like to remind you that I don't work for you. I work for Mr. Miller, who you hired."

"Which means you, Miss Halliwell, work for me until the end of the summer, when your contract's complete. You work for me and only me. Was that not made clear?" He kept the smirk on his face, and I crossed my arms tighter.

"What I do with my personal time is none of your business, Mr. Orion. If I take on another case, you don't get a say."

"What pack do you belong to?" he asked, changing tracks.

"I'm a lone wolf," I answered, biting my lip.

"Why?"

"That's none of your business. I'm here because you asked for whoever solved your last problem, and that was me. I'm not here because I want to be. I'm here because the bonus paid for my son's dream car. If it weren't for him, I never would have agreed to this."

"Where's your mate?"

"What part of 'none of your business' didn't you understand?" I growled. He was in front of me before I could blink, his scent cedar and musk filling the air between us. My breathing turned heavy as I looked up at him.

He looked down at me, authority radiating off him, his alpha aura pressing against my skin like a physical weight, urging me to submit. Lily growled and fought against it.

"Everyone who stays on my land is my business, Miss Halliwell." His voice was low and husky, and it stirred something in me I hadn't felt in a long time. His breath brushed hot against my ear, and my own breath caught somewhere in my throat before I could stop it.

"And you should remember, Mr. Orion, that I'm not a member of your pack."

"Blake."

"Excuse me?"

"It's Alpha Blake. You're a wolf, Miss Halliwell. You don't have to be pack for your wolf to want to submit." His arrogance disgusted me or at least, that's what I told myself. All I wanted was to shove him back a step.

"I'm a lone wolf, Mr. Blake. I don't need or want an alpha. Have a good weekend." I turned and walked out before he could respond. Alphas were all the same smug, arrogant, convinced everyone beneath them owed submission. Never again.

"Mom, everything okay?" Channing asked as I came out of the pack house.

"Of course. I just had to set some things straight with Mr. Blake. Beta Luca, could you show us to where we'll be staying?"

"I'll ride with Channing, you follow," Luca said, and I nodded. I needed a minute to myself, and I didn't need a beta mansplaining why his alpha is a prick. I already knew. And no I wasn't submitting.

The house wasn't far from the pack house. Secluded, surrounded by trees, a two-story navy blue with white trim and a wraparound porch. It was the kind of house I wished I could've afforded for Channing and me on my own. But with him headed to college, tuition came first.

"Everything's been stocked. There's a lake with a dock behind the property. Call if you need anything," Luca said, handing me his card. I parked in front of the house and walked over to Channing's car.

"Thank you, and please pass along my thanks to Mr. Blake," I told him.

"Want help carrying anything in? I could send a few warriors over."

"We've got it. Thank you, Beta Luca," Channing said, and Luca nodded.

"Are there any trails?" I asked before he could leave.

"One that circles the pack house and runs out to the training grounds," he said, pointing. "Also loops around the lake."

"Thanks again," I told him with a smile. It really was a beautiful place, even sitting on Orion land. He handed me a set of keys and headed back toward the pack house.

"Let's get this done, Mom. Maybe we can catch a movie after," Channing said, already unloading the SUV.

This place would have been perfect if I didn't feel like prey.

"You could just use him for sex," my wolf offered.

"I love you, and I know you want a strong wolf, but he isn't it. We have our pup to raise. I know you're lonely I am too, sometimes but then we meet another alpha and I remember exactly why I'm never doing this again."

"But we're a Luna wolf," she whined.

"I know, sweetie. Maybe once Channing's off at college, we find a human man who'll love us. I don't want to risk running into Channing's father." I sighed.

"Yeah," she whispered, retreating.

Most of my life has felt like a contradiction. I had to raise Channing, but my wolf craved a mate. It's hard to carry everything alone but how do you trust anyone, when your own fated mate turned out to be the one who tore your family apart? If he could do that, what's stopping anyone else?

Alpha Blake To say this Monday was busy would have been an understatement. It's been a long time since I've had so many back-to-back meetings. And to top it all off, the board was demanding a meeting with Ryley who had barely even started. Even though I knew she probably hadn't found anything yet. I didn't even know if there was anything to find. I was spending a lot of money to ease my own anxiety. But after learning the manager had been stealing for years right under my nose, I wanted nothing left unturned. I didn't get a chance to sit down behind my desk before Aspen stormed in with Luca right on his heels. "Dad, I'm in love," Aspen announced, dropping into a seat while Luca chuckled behind him. "Oh, and who's the lucky girl?" I smirked, taking my own seat. Luca sat down beside him, looking far too amused already. "She's an older woman, but that's okay. And she already has a kid, so I get to be a dad." Aspen said it with a completely straight face, and I pressed my lips into a

Ryley My stomach grumbled as I made my way into the dining room. It wasn't busy, so I grabbed a sandwich, some fruit, and a bottle of water. I had Channing's voice nagging in my head about eating more, so I grabbed a diet soda too. I sat down at an empty table, opened the container of cut-up fruit and berries, and started scrolling through my emails. I could feel curious eyes on me, and it twisted my stomach. I should have taken everything back to my office to eat at my desk. It didn't take long before I was lost in all the unread messages, and by the time I looked up, I'd already finished eating. I was just wrapping up an email before heading back to my office when the clicking of heels on the tile floor caught my attention. They stopped right in front of my table. I could feel someone's intense glare, but little did they know I was used to being glared at, and no one intimidated me. A foot started tapping impatiently while I took my sweet time finishing my email before finally lif

  • THE HIDDEN LUNA   CHAPTER 11

Ryley The weekend went by quickly. Channing and the alpha's son, Aspen, had been inseparable. He really is a good kid, especially for one being raised by a single dad. I enjoyed having him at our place. They spent Sunday playing video games and hanging around the house. I'm used to Channing having friends, but usually the weekends were for us. I think Aspen was just lonely he'd mentioned his dad was busy with meetings all weekend. Poor kid. Now it's Monday morning, and I'm walking up to the pack house. Beta Luca is standing outside. "Good morning, Miss Halliwell," he greeted me. I was dressed professionally in a high-waisted pencil skirt and a white blouse, my heels clicking against the driveway as I walked up toward him. "Good morning, Beta Luca. How are you feeling?" I asked with a smirk. "Sore, in places I never knew existed," he groaned, and I laughed. "Come on, let me show you to your office. I'll also show you where the dining room is for lunch," he said, leading me into t

  • THE HIDDEN LUNA   CHAPTER 10

Alpha BlakeI was hitting the weights in the gym when Aspen mind-linked me to say my beta was getting his ass kicked on the training field. What the hell was going on? I grabbed my shirt and headed over, greeting pack members along the way. With everything else going on, I'd wanted a few minutes alone to work off some tension."Yeah, 'cause jerking it in the shower for an hour didn't help," Gunner snickered. I ignored him. He'd been feeding me nothing but filthy images since we met Ryley the day before. He started purring like a kitten the second we reached the field and I saw her taking my beta down again and again with technique that was flawless, almost lazy in its precision. Everyone who was supposed to be training had stopped to watch instead. I stepped up beside her son, Channing, as Ryley helped Luca up off the ground. She'd flipped him hard enough to knock the wind clean out of him. He was gasping for breath, drenched in sweat. Ryley didn't even look winded."What's going on

  • THE HIDDEN LUNA   CHAPTER 9

RyleyI don't remember falling asleep. My mind had been racing through too many scenarios all night. I needed to take back some of the control some normalcy for the both of us while we're stuck here. Channing could find a summer job in the city, or start a couple of online classes.I forced myself up. The only way back to any kind of routine was our morning run. We hadn't made it to a movie the night before, but maybe he'd want to go this afternoon. If not, I'd spend the day reading. It had been a long time since I'd had a day to myself.I pulled on shorts, a sports bra, and a tank top, and stepped out of my room just as Channing came out of his, already dressed for the run."Was just coming to get you," he said."Morning, sweetie. Sleep okay?" I asked as we headed downstairs."Really good, actually. I think this could be good for us, Mom." Chipper as ever. He'll always be my boy with the glass half full.I grabbed my phone and the house key and followed him out onto the porch. After

RyleyI was still fuming, unable to focus on anything but that smug son of a bitch and his demand that I work for him and him alone. I gave up on unpacking, grabbed my laptop, and got to work instead."Arrogant prick, demanding I only work for him," I muttered, checking my email."Isn't he perfect?" my wolf purred. She'd been in a lovesick haze ever since she laid eyes on Alpha Blake."Did you forget we already got screwed over by an alpha? He was our mate, and look how that turned out. I'm not handing myself over to another one especially one who tried to command us. We have more important things to worry about. Like Channing.""Fine. But when he leaves for college, I'm owed a good fuck," she huffed, retreating. I understood her frustration. I'd given myself to someone once, and he'd betrayed me for it. I couldn't fall for that twice. I thought I'd loved my mate, and I don't think I'll ever be able to hand that much control to anyone again.I was deep into Mr. Dillinger's finances w
