Bronislava "Slava" Ignatova

The steel blade felt heavy in my hand, its cold crossguard biting into my palm, but the heat radiating off Vaelin erased every lingering ache in my ribs.

He stood in the center of the sand arena, six feet away, his bare torso glistening under the low amber glow of the wall braziers. His broad chest rose and fell in slow, measured surges, the dark runic tattoos along his ribs humming with a faint, dangerous golden light. He didn't look like a teacher. He looked like an apex predator stripped of his courtly velvet, raw and lethal, waiting to see if I would run or bleed.

"Show me the Alpha, Slava," Vaelin rasped, his golden eyes slitted, reflecting the firelight. "Not the girl who hid in the cellar. Show me the female who wants my crown."

A low rumble started in the back of my throat, my awakened wolf answering his challenge before my mind could process the danger. I didn't wait. I drove my bare feet into the coarse sand, kicking up a spray of white grit as I lunged forward, bringing my broadsword up in a violent diagonal slash aimed at his shoulder.

CLANG!

The impact rang out through the cavernous hall like a dying bell. Vaelin didn't even shift his footing. He brought his broadsword up, catching my blade near the hilt, absorbing the kinetic force of my Blood Alpha surge with pure, terrifying physical mass.

"Sloppy," he growled into my face.

Before I could pull back, his free hand shot out, his broad, calloused palm slamming against my sternum. He shoved me back three paces, the force sending my heels digging deep channels into the sand.

"You're relying on raw power," Vaelin said, stepping forward, his massive frame closing the distance before I could set my stance. "You think strength makes you sovereign. Strength without leverage is just a tantrum."

His blade came down in a swift, heavy arc. I barely brought my guard up in time, the steel clashing with enough force to send a brutal vibration straight through my forearms into my shoulders. The shockwave forced my back to arch, my bare, sweat-slick shoulders pressing flush against his broad chest as he closed the distance, trapping my sword arm against his side.

A sharp gasp tore from my throat as the sheer heat of him hit me.

We were locked together, chest to chest, our heavy breaths mingling in the chilly air. Through the thin silk of my shift, my nipples hardened instantly against his bare pectoral muscles. The friction of our skin—slick with sweat and the sweet herbal oil he had massaged into my bruises—created an electric, suffocating wave of static that sent a liquid surge pooling straight down into my belly.

"You're breathing too fast, little wolf," Vaelin whispered against my ear, his deep voice a dark, gravelly vibration that sent a violent shiver down my spine. "Your heart is beating for me, not the fight."

"Shut up," I rasped, my teeth gritted as I twisted my hips, using the momentum to throw my weight against his side.

I slipped out of his lock, my feet sliding across the sand as I spun, sweeping my blade low at his ankles. Vaelin leaped over the steel with fluid grace, landing right back in my personal space. His heavy broadsword clattered to the sand floor as he abandoned the weapon entirely, reaching out with both hands to catch my waist.

I dropped my sword too, meeting him bare-handed.

The bout instantly devolved into a desperate, breathless tangle of limbs and muscle. I slammed my forearms against his chest, trying to force him back, but Vaelin wrapped his arms around my midsection, lifting me off my feet. I hooked my leg around his thick thigh, using my momentum to drag us both down onto the heavy fur rugs lining the edge of the training floor.

We hit the furs with a heavy, breathless thud.

The collision drove the air from my lungs, but the wild, unsealed blood in my veins refused to let me yield. I rolled immediately, my knees digging into the sand as I tried to pin his shoulders to the floor, but Vaelin countered with effortless, terrifying control. He shifted his hips, his long legs entwining with mine, using his weight to turn us until he was leaning over me, his massive frame completely eclipsing the ceiling lights.

"Is this where you break?" Vaelin growled into my neck, his heavy chest flattening mine into the plush furs, his bare arms bracing on either side of my head.

"Never," I gasped, my small hands reaching up to grip his broad shoulders, my fingers digging into the hard, damp muscle.

The physical proximity was agonizing, explicit, and utterly intoxicating. Every move we made brought our sweat-slick bodies into brutal, intimate friction. My bare thighs were trapped beneath his heavy hips, my pelvis locked directly beneath the rigid, searing weight of his desire pressing through his dark trousers. The scent of cedar, warm iron, and his intense, feral heat filled my lungs, drowning out the dust of the arena.

My heart hammered frantically against my ribs, no longer from the strain of the bout, but from the suffocating, slow-burning hunger consuming us both. I felt the heavy, rhythmic thud of his Lycan heart slamming against my palm, the rapid rise and fall of his ribs against mine, and the dark, slitted gold of his eyes tracking every hitch of my breathing.

"You are relentless," Vaelin rasped, his face dipping low, his lips dragging slowly over the line of my jaw down to the frantic pulse point on my throat.

A high, needy sound escaped my lips before I could bite it back. My back arched off the furs, my chest rising to meet his touch, my body surrendering entirely to the liquid fire pooling between my legs. His thumb slid up my neck, catching my jaw in a firm, velvet grip, forcing my face up until my mouth was a fraction of an inch from his.

"You push me, Slava," Vaelin whispered, his hot breath fanning across my wet, trembling lips, his knuckles white against the floorboards as he fought the absolute limit of his restraint. "You stand in my ring, you bare your teeth at me, and you expect me not to mark you right here in the grit."

"Then do it," I choked out, my voice trembling with a wild, explicit need that shattered the last lingering wall of my pride. My hands slid from his shoulders to his hair, my fingers tangling in the platinum strands, pulling his face that agonizing fraction of an inch closer. "Stop testing me, Vaelin. Stop holding back."

His golden eyes flared with a feral, terrifying hunger. He didn't answer with words.

Instead, Vaelin shifted his weight, his large, calloused hand reaching down to catch my wrist, twisting my arm back to pin me deeper into the furs in a tight, unyielding submission hold. The sudden, dark demonstration of his physical dominance made my blood boil, my unsealed Alpha marrow exploding in a desperate, electric surge.

I didn't submit.

Driven by pure, primal impulse, I planted my bare heel into the sand, arched my hips with a violent burst of kinetic power, and twisted my body beneath his weight. The sudden leverage caught him off guard.

With a breathless gasp, I flipped him over, my slick thighs sliding over his hips as I landed heavily astride his waist, pinning his broad chest to the furs beneath me.

  • THE LYCAN TSAR’S REJECTED CROWN   Against the Rack

Bronislava “Slava” IgnatovaThe knock came again before we had put our clothes on straight.Once. Slow. From under our feet.Vaelin’s hand left my hip. The gold in his eyes went flat and lethal. He fastened his trousers, threw my shirt at me, and we took the service stair down into the mountain without speaking. The weapon vaults sat behind a door of black iron and bone wards. The ward should have been asleep. It was humming, low, like a throat that had just finished a word.He put his palm to the lock. It recognized him and still hesitated, as if something else had touched it first. Then it gave.Cold air rolled out. Oil. Steel. Old blood baked into stone. Rows of racks ran into the dark, swords and spears and hooked Siberian axes standing like a silent court. No one inside. No footprints in the dust except the ones we were about to make.“Stay behind my left shoulder,” he said.“I passed your last test.”“This is not a test.”We walked the center aisle. My new daggers sat upstairs o

Bronislava “Slava” IgnatovaThe bells were still shaking the stone when I dragged my leathers back on.Vaelin was already at the window, bare to the waist, the runes on his back lit like banked coals. Below us the inner court moved in practiced lines. No breach. No smoke. Only the winter alarm and that wrong cold still sitting behind my teeth.“It is not at our wall,” he said without turning. “Not yet.”“I heard my name.” I hated how thin it came out. “Not yours. Mine. The way she used to say it when I was small and sick.”He looked at me then. Gold ringed the amber. He crossed the room, took my face in both hands, and pressed his mouth to my forehead hard enough to hurt. Not romance. A seal.“Whatever reached you is old blood work. You will learn to shut the door. That starts tonight.”He did not ask if I wanted the lesson. I would have said yes anyway. The war library sat three levels under the observatory, a long vault of oak tables and iron shelves that smelled of dust, lamp oil,

Bronislava “Slava” IgnatovaThe cold hit me between one breath and the next. Not the Ural wind. I knew that one. This came from inside the bone, a thin white needle behind my eyes, and with it a mouth I had not heard in three years saying my full name like a curse and a lullaby at once.Bronislava.My knee buckled on the training stone. Vaelin’s practice blade was already coming. I dropped under it late. The flat of the steel kissed my ribs hard enough to steal air. I hit the frost and rolled, tasting iron.He did not ask if I was hurt. He never did when we were on the circle. That was the rule I had demanded. Equals do not pause for softness until the bout is done.“Again,” I said. His amber eyes narrowed. He had felt the hitch. Of course he had. The bond between us was a live wire under the skin. I shoved the faraway voice into a locked room and came up on the balls of my feet.We moved.Three years of this floor. Three years of him teaching me how not to die pretty. I was leaner no

Matrena DanilovaKirill’s blade kissed the hollow of my throat and I almost laughed. Almost. The steel was warm from his palm. Boy heat. Pack heat. The same heat I had rocked to sleep when he was small enough to fit against my ribs.I pulled the hood back myself. No trembling. The moonlight found my eyes and I let him look. Let him search for the priestess who braided his sister’s hair and blessed his first kill. She was not there. I had buried her years ago under silver and wolfsbane and the smell of Slava’s dying parents.“You fought bravely tonight, my Alpha.” My voice came out doubled, the old tongue riding under the human one like a second pulse. “But the wolves at your gate were never meant to conquer your fortress. They were only meant to keep you busy while I opened the door.”The token in my fist was still wet. Black blood hissed when it hit the stone. His nostrils flared. His wolf shoved forward so hard his pupils blew wide. I felt the animal’s confusion like a hand on my ch

  • THE LYCAN TSAR’S REJECTED CROWN   Drawn to the High Cliffs

Alpha Kirill Rostov The iron war horns groaned across the valley, their brassy resonance shuddering through the freezing stone beneath my boots. Below the ramparts, the red eyes multiplied. Dozens became scores, a crimson tide rising out of the snowdrifts, moving with an eerie, silent precision that made the hair on my arms stand up. "Form up on me!" I roared, my Alpha command slamming into the ears of every warrior in the inner courtyard. I didn't wait for the heavy timber gates to swing fully open. The moment the gap widened enough for a single body, I threw myself through it, my boots churning through the deep, blood stained powder. Behind me, thirty of my elite vanguard surged into the night, steel drawn, teeth bare, their inner wolves snarling for slaughter. The cold air hit my throat like crushed glass, but the heat of my rage kept my blood boiling. We hit the front line of the rogue assault three hundred paces from the lower village boundary. CLANG! My broadsword met

  • THE LYCAN TSAR’S REJECTED CROWN   A Calculated Siege

Alpha Kirill RostovThe smell of burning grain was bitter, sour, and suffocating.I stood on the stone rampart of the southern watchtower, my heavy wolf-skin cloak whipping violently in the sub-zero gale. Below me, in the snow-choked valley where the pack’s main winter storehouses stood, column after column of black, greasy smoke billowed into the dark night sky.Three years of harvested rye, dried meat, and salted fish—the only buffer keeping three thousand North Ridge pack members alive through the arctic freeze—were turning to ash before my eyes."Report!" I growled, my voice a deep, vibrating thunder that made the young sentry beside me drop to his knees in the ice."Alpha... it was a coordinated strike," the guard stammered, his teeth chattering as his breath bloomed in white clouds. "They didn't come through the main pass. A dozen rogues slipped through the frozen riverbed at midnight. They breached the perimeter wards using blood-anchors, doused the grain silos with pitch, and
