The Chief of the United States secret service had frustration boldly written on his face. What could be wrong with the president? He wondered . He knew clearly that the worst thing that could happen to the nation was to lose their president at a time as critical as the one they were facing.
" Sir. " Secret service captain Clinton called as he walked up to him near the fountain where he stood. " We have checked everything."
" Is there any flop?"
" No. The security is tight in every corner "
" That's a relief. "
" But except for—"
" What do you mean by that? Except for where?"
" The West wing. "
" The West wing? I personally gave orders to mount enough men on the west and east wings . How come the East wing is secure while the West wing is leaking?"
" I really can't say, sir. I spotted leakages there. But you have nothing to worry about. It has been fixed already. More men have been positioned there. "
" Hmm.." the chief exhaled.
" Sir , even from your exhaled air, one can say you are going through a lot mentally."
" What is that supposed to mean?"
" Your exhaled air even has weight in it. "
The chief smiled . " If you were in my position, you would have no choice. Greater responsibilities come with greater heights. There is nothing particularly sweet about being the chief of the highly esteemed United States Secret Service. What do you think people will say? It was in my reign that the nation was made to go through all the troubles."
" Sir, with due respect, it doesn't work that way. I mean, how is that supposed to be your fault?"
" You know, someday, you might taste this position. "
" Nope. I have no interest in it. I will retire early."
" Any good reasons?"
" So, I can have plenty of time to spend and take good care of my wife and kids."
" Are you even married ? You are not."
" I am looking forward to that."
" When?"
" Prolly , after this national crisis. Speaking of that sir, how is the president?"
" He is being taken care of. "
" I hope he recovers from this."
" He will. Your president is a strong man. "
" I think there are chances that he is infected."
" Infected with what?"
" I can't say. But the coughing bout came out of the blue. He looked healthy all through the recent times."
A police sedan pulled over and parked before some feet away from them. A high ranking officer stepped down and marched towards him.
" Chief Christopher Balor. " The officer called him as he approached.
" Mr Joe. We are glad to have you here. "
They shook hands.
" Chief of police Joe Maxwell."
" Of course, I know who you are." Chief Chris said.
" For formality sake." Mr Joe smiled.
" Meanwhile, just call me Chris. "
" Chris."
" Yeah . Chris. I prefer that. This is one of the closest agents to me. "
" Oh. That is great. What's your name, young man?"
" Captain Clinton. " He extends his hands.
" That's a good name. Hope you are as good as your name sounds?"
" Hopefully. "
" Not hopefully." Chief Chris cut in. " He is one of the best officers in the secret service."
" That's a great commendation. And what were you doing when members of the Congress were gradually taken?"
" You can leave now. " Chief Chris said to Captain Clinton.
" Just kidding. " Mr Joe spoke as the young man left.
" What is the situation of things currently?"
" Everything is under control."
" I doubt. What I saw on TV does not really look good. Are you aware of what harm that could cause for everyone?"
" The safety of the president is every citizen's top priority."
" You can't be so sure. Not everyone is interested in doing security jobs. "
" It ought to be so. They chose him . We chose him. And if I need to remind you, protecting the president is not just the duty of one body called the United States Secret Service. Never. It is also your duty in times of crisis. Every security related office was summoned to handle this issue by the president himself. So, do not think too highly of yourself ."
" Sir!" Someone spoke into the Chief's ear device.
" Right here ." He replied.
" There has been another issue tonight."
" What is the matter now?" He asked
" A missile dropped at Philadelphia a few moments ago."
" What?! When did this happen?"
" Not long ago. The information reaching us says clearly that there is a great probability of the nation losing someone good tonight."
" And who is that?"
" The governor of Philadelphia."
" Governor Tom Wilson? Never. Do not take your eyes off the wheel. We got this."
" Doesn't sound good. " Mr Joe said.
" It is as bad as it seems." Chief Chris replied.
" What is the case?"
" Philadelphia has been attacked."
" What? When?"
" A few moments ago, a missile landed there. "
" What the hell is going on?" Mr Joe said frustratingly.
" The information getting to me says governor Tom Wilson was in the scene. "
" Tom Wilson? Did he survive it?"
" This incident just occurred not long ago. By now, units must have been dispatched. In no distant time, we will confirm his state." He breathes out. "But to be frank, I doubt he will make it. "
" Not just him. Everyone in the scene will hardly survive. The hard truth is that this definitely is not over yet. "
" I doubt it will be . I won't see any other threatening case as a result of this crisis as a shocker. No. Never again. I have seen enough."
" Where is the president right now?"
" Not to be disclosed . But do know that he is in safe hands."
" I did not mean you should disclose his location to me. I was invariably asking to know his state at the moment. "
" If it is about that, we should just hope he will be alright. "
" And the vice president?"
" He is safe. Now, we all need to kick off the duties again. Till the enemy is known and caught, there will be no such thing as a moment of rest in this nation. "
" Let's begin right away. " Mr Joe said and they started walking in.
Mike arrived at the scene of the explosion in a haste. The whole place had been sealed completely. Busy workers from different units were at the scene tending to different needs. He jumped off the bicycle he rode to the place . It was not his own. When the news of the explosion got into his ears, a reflex was stimulated in him. And he sought for the nearest means of transportation. A bicycle parked just beside him. He mounted it and rode off. Behind him, the voice of a younger male tried to signal him to stop. But it was a pointless act. He would not deny the fact that he heard it . It was not just the right time to play discipline. His loved one was in that part of Center City where the explosion had taken place. Not just a loved one. He had loved ones residing there. His mother , his friend Steve who turned into a brother and the lady he cherished were all residing there. Earlier that night, when the president's supposed speech was ann
The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations walked in and headed to one of the control Chambers. No greetings had come as usual. Everyone was just too busy with one thing or the other. And he was frequenting his to and fro walk in the building. The situation had become too tasking for any high ranking official in the security world. And as a matter of fact, the lower ranking ones have been feeling the endless heat of everything. The doors of the room slid open and he walked in effortlessly. " What is the situation now? Any good updates yet? " His eyes wheeled round a technology flooded room . Every computer displayed different locations in the country. " Everyone is still on it. " Agent Wills replied . " My God. " The director drew one of the swivel chai
The darkness of the sky was already moving away slowly as it was dawn. It was already the early hours of the morning. Mike sat on the partially dismantled heap where they found his mother some hours ago. His hands pressed hard on his knees. Steve stood in front of him , looking at the unending work before him . The bodies were still being taken away. A work that lasted through the night till the moment. He sighed and turned to Mike. Mike's face had no signs of smiles. His face was as mean as his heart felt at the moment." Mike. " Steve called. " Mike. " He did not respond. " Mike!" Mike raised his head to face Steve." Mike. Don't tell me you were not absent minded and yet ignored me. "" What is it , Steve? What do you want to say?"
The sky was already becoming filled with a brightness rising from the East. The sun was already coming up. The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations just stood with his arms locked and stared into the morning sky from the balcony. He had come out there to feel a different air. One different from the work laden breath everyone took in and out. But the peace he sought appeared to be beyond his reach. All his efforts to put away the thoughts proved abortive. The thoughts kept returning to him . And there was nothing he could do about it. He thought of the case with vice governor Wallace. What could really be happening in Philadelphia? The same man they had seen at the site of the explosion was said to have left the house when he called. That made no sense in any way. He sighed. Could he really be innocent? That was no way possible. The images of him that Kane showed them was great proof he was there. Vice governor Wallace has always attracted
" For how long is this nonsense going to continue?" Chief Chris said. " What nonsense is this?"" What will happen to a nation without a leader?" Chief Joe asked." I guess that is the point." Chief Chris said. " Who will take the responsibility of acting as the leader? In times of national crisis, the only beacon that stands to be of great help to the people is the president or his vice. But in this case, the president is in a critical condition and the vice president has gone missing. The congressmen and congresswomen have been missing for a very long time now. Almost on a daily basis. How do we go about all this? "" We should proceed very carefully. " Chief Joe said. " I guess this is part of the idea. Getting us to work under pressure. If we do it that way, we might lik
Mike sat down on one of the blue sofas and stared at the enlargement that hung on the wall of the living room. The enlargement was that of his mother. That picture of her was taken three months ago on her birthday. Mike went on to make it an enlargement and presented it to her. His phone rang. It was an official call. He owned one of the booming restaurants in Center City. Lucky enough for him, the restaurant was not affected by the explosion. He ignored the call. When the phone was done ringing, the picture he took with his mother came into view. He had used it as his screensaver. He smiled tearfully. Memories would not let him be. How on Earth was he going to get over the loss of his mother? The only parent he knew was that woman. His phone rang again. This time, it was Steve. He picked the call ." Steve. " He said as he placed the phone on his ear.
The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations sat in his office with both legs crossed across his office table. He leaned comfortably on his swivel chair. It had already been twenty-two minutes he asked the team to come but no one was there yet . He could feel that sleep was slowly creeping to his eyes. He fought it . It was their fault. If they had arrived as told, he would not be here battling with sleep. He yawned weakly and rubbed his eyes. All he wanted at that moment was to just go home and relax well on his mighty bed and get enough sleep no matter how many hours it would cost him. For a very long time, he had not had any good sleep. Several hours of sleeplessness. Five minutes ago, his wife had called demanding that he returned home to get some rest. And at least, eat good food. It had been a long time since he did anything that made him feel good. He did not play table tennis anymore. Basketball was already out of the picture. His time
Captain Clinton walked under the morning sky through the streets of Washington DC. Anyone who looked at him would probably think he was on his way to work. He wished it was so. For many days now, he had been spending his night time in the office . He turned right and continued walking. " Rick, are you there?" He asked. " Yo. Right here." Rick replied through his ear device. " Just chilling with a bottle of—" he was cut short. " Please Rick, I do not have the strength for any long talks. How close am I?" " You didn't even give me the chance to finish what I wanted to say. " " You are so unbelievable, Rick. I asked you a question. And I demand
