“Oh Susan… you really are a pathetic little brat, aren’t you?” He leaned back against his desk, his arms crossed as he watched me with a smug expression. “Did you actually think I forgot you? That I forgot us?” he scoffed and shook his head. “No, sweetheart. I was just sick of you. I stood at the doorway frozen. I fixed my eyes on him, trying to make sense of what he had just said. His words hung in the air like a challenge, crashing over me like a wave of ice. I parted my lips to speak, but no sound came. “Darling she looks like a lost puppy” Lily chuckled softly. She tilted her head pretending to pout “It’s almost sad, isn’t it?” He smiled at what she had just said before pushing off the desk and he walked towards me, his steps were slow and deliberate until he stood inches away from me. Close enough that I could smell his cologne, the same scent that used to make me feel safe. Now it only made me sick “You tried so hard, didn’t you?”, he lifted his fingers to count “Saving up, running around like a desperate little fool, hoping I’d come back to you” he dropped his hands and looked me right inside my eyes “but the truth is…” he exhaled slowly and let it out like a whisper “I’m never coming back… not now. Not ever.” My hands trembled. My heart pounded. His words pierced through me like a dagger, I finally found my voice “Why” my voice cracked, but I forced the words out “Why lie? Why did you pretend you lost your memory?. Why her?”, my stomach twisted “my sister”, the words came out almost like a whisper as tears welled up in my eyes “Half-sister” Lily corrected, “you never liked to share, did you? If you did, you wouldn’t be worried about me having your man” “You were never meant to find out this way but you made it easier,” he said with an unbothered shrug, his expression was neutral and unaffected as if all of this pain, the betrayal was just an inconvenience to him. A complete joke. I swallowed the lump in my throat, my chest tightening with something between anger and heartbreak, the weight of everything I had sacrificed for him felt heavier now“I gave you everything, Jamie. EVERYTHING!” “And that’s the problem sweetheart,” he said with false sweetness, “You gave me too much and you still weren’t enough…never enough, not in eight years, not even for a second”. He took a step back, he glanced at Lily before turning back to me. His eyes flashed with something—satisfaction. “Lily—She knows how to keep me interested” he counted his words as he spoke, like he wanted me to register every word in my soul “She knows how to satisfy me in ways you never could…you never measured up Susan. Not in bed. Not in life” I felt like I had been hit by a ton of bricks. Tears burned my eyes, spilling down my cheeks and I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t help it but I hated it. I hated that I was crying. I just watched the man who had been my safe space, my lover, my everything say those cruel words to me. “I sold everything…for this,” I said with a trembling voice as I raised my hand that held the vial all this while. He looked at the bottle and scoffed “Keep it, I don’t need it. What I need is someone who can keep me interested and satisfied.” He looks at Lily and then back to me. “And you can’t do that” The silence between us became thick and suffocating, I tried to stop my tears from falling but I couldn’t, I never for one-second thought that Jamie would play me this dirty, all my life I have done everything I could just for him, he is a billionaire but that didn’t stop me from doing everything a wife should do for her husband. I loved him, cherished him, and my loyalty to him is something even he cannot deny, for a fleeting second, the thought of begging crossed my mind, of dropping to my knees and promising to be whatever he wanted. But I knew better. He had already decided. And I wasn’t ready for another round of humiliation. Jamie had said his piece. Lily was smiling victoriously, her fingers tracing circles on his chest like she had already won—maybe she had. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and turned to leave, my legs felt weak, but I forced them to move, one step at a time, I didn’t want them to see me break any more than I already had but just as I reached the door his voice cut through the air and I came to a halt. “Walk out that door and you’ll have nothing.” His voice was cold and serious. How worse could it get? I really hoped the ground would open and swallow me but it didn’t, what did I do to deserve this humiliation? I thought to myself, Jamie knew, he knew I had nothing, he knew I had nowhere to go and I hated it, I really hated that I couldn’t help myself. “Let’s be honest with ourselves Susan, you sold everything for that small bottle and now it’s useless. You don’t have anything, no home, no money, no family, no me” he paused like he was giving me time to understand that I had lost everything before adding “So tell me… where exactly do you think you’re going?” I squeezed my eyes shut, I was broken because I knew, every word he said was true. His lips curved into a wide smile, he had me exactly where he wanted me. “Work for me,” he said sharply, I blinked, I wasn’t sure if I heard him right. Lily inhaled sharply, her eyes widened in surprise, followed by an extremely pleased laugh “Ohh, that’s cruel” she said holding her chest. Jamie leaned forward on the desk “Think about it, you need a job and I do need more staff. It’s perfect, isn’t it?”, he smirked “You can be my maid”Susan’s POVOnly the click of the gun was heard. It echoed loud in the room, like the last bit of hope breaking apart. Johnny’s hands were trembling as he pulled the trigger again… and again. Just more clicks—but there was no bullet. Nothing. His face twisted in shock.“No… no,” he muttered, staring at the useless gun like it had betrayed him. He shook it, pulled again. Still nothing. Just empty, cold clicks.Marshall laughed. It was deep, mean, like he was watching a child fail at something so simple.“You really thought I wouldn’t check your weapon?” he sneered.Johnny dropped the gun. It clattered to the floor. Then he charged towards Marshall. They crashed into each other hard, knocking over the chair, slamming into the desk. Marshall grabbed Johnny and slammed him into the floor. The sound of bones hitting tile made my heart drop.Johnny tried to fight back, but Marshall was faster, stronger. He got on top of Johnny and punched him hard in the face—once, twice, again.I screamed.
Susan’s POVMy heart was still racing as I stood frozen in place, staring at him.“Marshall…” I breathed, barely able to say his name. “Why are you doing this? I was just starting to trust you.”He smiled, slow and wicked. “Took you long enough to figure it out.”I stepped back. My stomach twisted in fear. “Please… please, Marshall, don’t do this.”“Uh-uh… it’s too late now,” he said, shaking his head. Then his eyes flickered toward the bathroom. “You really should’ve minded your business, Susan.”“You’re the one who locked him in there,” I said, my voice shaky. He didn’t even flinch. “Of course I did. Nathan stuck his nose where it didn’t belong. Same as you.”I swallowed hard. “Why…? What do you want from me?”He stepped forward.I stepped back. And he smiled like I was a toy he was enjoying breaking.“I want you to finally know the truth,” he said. “You’ve been walking around all your life thinking you’re someone you’re not. Living in a story that was made up for you. Pretty little
Susan’s POVThe brass key shook in my fingers as I pushed it into the lock again. I twisted harder. Nothing.I tried again.Still locked.I pulled it out and stared at it like it had betrayed me. “No, no, no… please,” I whispered, my voice breaking.I had been sure this was it. I had felt it in my bones. But the door stayed tightly shut.I stepped back, my heart pounding loudly in my chest, my hand trembling. Whoever was inside needed help—and fast. But I was stuck. Out of time. Out of strength.I dropped to my knees and crawled under the desk again, searching wildly. My hands scraped over the drawers, yanking them open, then slamming them shut. I flung open every cabinet I could find, tearing through files, envelopes, and loose paper. Anything that looked like it might hold something. Then I spotted it—tucked in the corner of the bookshelf behind old binders was a box. No, not one—three different boxes, all locked. Each one had a small label: “Spare Keys.”My heart jumped. I grabbed
Susan’s POVMy hand gripped the doorknob of the bathroom tighter, and I leaned closer, pressing my ear against the cold wood.Another soft sound came—like something brushing against the wall. Then came a weak voice. Barely above a whisper.“Help…”My heart slammed against my ribs. I lost the urge to pee in an instant.I jerked back, stumbling a little. My belly felt heavy, and my hands went straight to it. I stood still for a second, trying to convince myself I’d imagined it. That it was just the plumbing. That maybe it was a rat, or the wind, or my mind playing tricks on me.But I heard it again.Clearer this time.“Help… please…”I froze.Someone was in there.Locked inside.I looked around the room, panic crawling up my spine like cold fingers. I had to open the door. I needed to open it.But how?I glanced at the lock again. It wasn’t broken or busted. Just locked. A regular bathroom door lock.“Where’s the damn key?” I muttered, eyes darting across the room.I tried the handle ag
Susan’s POV Two months had passed.I was now six months pregnant. It still felt strange to say it out loud—even stranger to feel it. My belly was round now, heavy and firm. I could see it in the mirror, feel it when I moved, and I even caught Johnny staring at it sometimes like he still couldn’t believe it either.I hadn’t gotten any more messages. Artemis had gone quiet. Nathan was still missing, and the fear that once kept me up at night was slowly fading away. I was… okay. Not perfect. Not safe. But okay. And weirdly, I was happy. It wasn’t the loud kind of happiness. It was soft. Quiet. Like breathing clean air after a storm. But with the happiness came the mood swings too.One minute I was laughing, the next I was crying because I couldn’t find my hairbrush. I threw tantrums over the dumbest things—like the time Johnny brought me vanilla ice cream instead of coconut. But he never yelled. Never even sighed. He just pulled me close and rubbed my back like I was the most precious t
Susan’s POVMy breath caught. The screen glowed softly in the dim room, casting sharp light across my face. My eyes stayed locked on the message, my chest tightening with every word.“Now that you’ve met the devil,Are you ready to know the truth about your mother?”I blinked once, twice. My hand trembled slightly as I lowered the phone, but before I could even process the weight of those words, a second message flashed across the screen—faster, bolder, like it had been waiting for me to see the first:Don’t listen to him, Susan.Artemis is trying to bring you down. You’re stronger than your past. Don’t let him ruin what you’ve built.I stared at the words. For a second, everything went still. The room. The breath in my lungs. The quiet hum of the city outside.I felt Johnny stir beside me. He was still awake—his hand was warm and solid on my waist. When I turned to him, he was already watching me, eyes soft with concern.“Another message?” he asked quietly.I nodded and handed him th
