CHAPTER 4

Scarlett

My eyes opened and tears fell from them before I could even hold them back. I could feel my chest tighten and my hands folded into a fist.

I didn't even know how I ended up in the hospital. I didn't even care to look to see if there was someone around me or not.

“Doctor, she's awake," I heard someone say before Chris Mandoza's footsteps started echoing, and before I knew it, he was in front of me.

“Ms. Brown thank goodness you're fine," he said before asking the nurse to jot something for him from the heart monitor.

I could hear what he was saying but my mind was far away. Deep in my thoughts where betrayal was still looking at me like some fool. I couldn't even get myself to say a word but something else made me look at the doctor.

My baby. I wasn't feeling it. What the hell happened to my baby?

My heart started pounding fast and I was about to sit straight when the doctor told me that it was impossible at that moment. I held his hand and asked if my child was OK but the response he gave me shattered my entire being.

“I'm sorry Ms. Brown. It couldn't make it."

"No, that's not true. That's not true, where is my baby?” I cried, placing my hand on top of my stomach that was already hurting.

"Ms. Brown, please be careful, it could open the wounds,” the doctor warned, but I didn't care. I just felt like going back in time at that moment.

Why would fate be this unfair to me after all those failed attempts?

The two things that were about to be my joy disappeared at that very moment we're about to be complete. I was four months pregnant and wasn't going to tell Daniel until our wedding was over.

He always told me how much he wanted to be a father and raise our children, but we never got the results after multiple attempts. On our last try, the results were first negative, but after I visited the doctor again, he told me I was going to be a mother.

Just like every woman out there, I was happy and couldn't wait to tell Daniel, but he was on a business trip as always, so I waited for him to return, but even when he did, I just wanted to make the news special, so I kept it secret.

Now it's all gone. My baby is gone, and I'm here crying on a hospital bed, squeezing the sheets with both anger and pain. I didn't even know which was hurting the most. The betrayal from a man you've built or the loss of a baby you couldn't wait to have.

“You're so dramatic. Do you know what would happen if the media found out?" Evelyn asked, looking at me with a disgusted face as she walked towards my bed.

She's Daniel's mother, and all she cares about is keeping their family name clean. Although I overlooked some of the things she would say to me. I wasn't going to have it anymore. Not after what her son's betrayal cost me.

“Mrs. Cross, I don't think Ms. Brown is in a good condition for harsh treatment right now," the Doctor said but she didn't care.

“What are you even talking about Doctor? I'm sure this girl is just looking for attention," Evelyn said looking at the Doctor.

I would have slapped the daylights out of her if I had enough energy because, being a woman, she would understand the pain of losing a child you've been waiting for so long, but Evelyn was celebrating instead.

“She had a what? I doubt that child was even for my son, and if it were, then losing it should be a blessing. I mean there won't be scandals in the future,” Evelyn said about sitting next to me when I asked her to leave.

“What did you just say?" she asked, looking at me with disgust.

“I said leave my room now," I managed to say even though my tone was low.

“Agh, I wouldn't even care to come, OK. I am only here because Daniel heard what happened,” she smirked before taking her handbag.

I didn't know what I had done to deserve so much hatred, but the fact that she said my child's death was a blessing made me realize how much she didn't want me in their family.

How could I even be so blind?

The door closed and Evelyn had walked out. I was just on my hospital bed unable to sit straight because the pain coming from my stomach was unbearable.

It was as if it could relate to my hurt. The nurse brought me food and water but I refused to eat. I couldn't even feel hungry.

“Baby," I had a familiar voice say before I looked at her — Zoe, my best friend.

I couldn't help but cry the moment she came closer to my bed.

“Wait. Scarlett what's going on here?" she asked, looking at my stomach.

I didn't even know where to start, but I managed to tell her that I lost my baby, and she just couldn't help but try to keep me calm.

“Aww, I'm so sorry this happened to you, Scarlett. I'm here now, stop crying, your eyes are swelling, baby," she said, kissing me on the forehead.

I couldn't wipe my tears. The entire day just felt like hell. It was evening, and Zoe had to go change and then come back again, but I didn't want to burden her.

“I'm not going until you take your food," she said, holding the bowl of rice in her hands.

“I'm not feeling hungry. "

“I know but I still want you to eat," she insisted.

I didn't have an appetite. Water was the only thing I could drink so I asked her to give me just that. After some minutes, Zoe went back home, and the nurse brought my medications.

“Ms. Brown. I'm sorry for what happened, please take your medicine," she said, handing me the pill.

"Thanks,” I whispered before taking it. I did feel bad and wanted to be alone.

“I'll be at the door please let me know if you want anything," the nurse said before walking out.

“Scarlett!" The voice and face I didn't want to see shouted, looking at me with worry, but I knew he was probably here to make sure I was dead. I didn't even care about how scared he looked.

It was Daniel Cross. My cheating fiancè.

Scarlett Zoe had gone to get her hair done at the salon while I decided to remain since it was a little cold. I pulled the blanket tightly around my body, which was still healing. My mind was as though a knife had been taken to every memory and left pieces scattered at every angle. I didn't feel like talking or even facing anyone. But I was fed up with feeling like a victim. I looked at my phone's screen and assumed that it was Daniel trying to reach me at first so I ignored it. Then it buzzed again. The pain was still inside scratching every part of me that wanted to escape reality.I was about to head to the door when Zoe asked me to wait.“I know this day would have changed everything for you, but just know that you're loved and appreciated, OK," she said, hugging me."Thank you,” I faked a smile and we made our way out of that room. He called me as if I didn't know what I was to him— Some image holder. Can you please tell the nurse I'm her husband?" he said to the doctor, who looked at him and shook his head.“What? Why? Didn't my mother come here?" he asked, probably wondering why that witch didn't stay with me until he arrived.“Ms. Brown asked her to leave and you too should if you want what's best for her," the Doctor responded before coming to ch
