This was the moment I had always dreamed about, my fiancè was on one knee down with a ring in his hand. “Will you marry me?”
“Yes.”
I turned slowly to the side, because that was not my voice. It was my best friend, saying yes to the man I had given four years of my life.
It took me a few minutes to wrap my head around what was unfolding in front of me.
Ciara had called me a few hours ago to come to this restaurant, I had been excited and all since it was my fourth anniversary with Savvy after all.
“Put on something nice, bestie,” she sounded so excited. “He might pop the question tonight, who knows?”
“Oh stop it, Ciara. You can never be too sure with men.”
That was my response even when I was blushing like an idiot on the other side of the phone. But it seemed like it was all a plan to make me witness this.
Now I understand why they have gotten so close these past few months. It was happening right under my nose, but I was too naive to sniff it out.
I looked around, away from the funny act they were putting on and noticed the restaurant was empty. Savvy must have completely booked it all for their privacy.
“Hi there, what did I miss?” I asked, interrupting their nauseating kiss moment.
Savvy had shock all over his face, while Ciara had a look that was hard to place. I walked up to them and took a seat, then poured champagne from the bottle directly into my mouth.
“How did you ge—” Savvy started talking, but Ciara interrupted him.
“I asked her to come here, how long were we going to keep this away from her?” She turned to me. “I'm sorry you had to find out this way, but it is what it is.”
I took a deep breath in and whistled. “This is the part where I get to hear your excuses, I'm waiting. Go on.”
Savvy pulled a chair close to me and sat down, but when Ciara gave him a look he backed up.
“She has that much control over you already? That's interesting.” I said with a smile.
But on the inside, I was in tears and broken. I wasn't going to give them the satisfaction of seeing me that way, so I put on a tough front.
“I'm sorry babe—”
“Do you mean me or her?” I cut Savvy off when he started.
He cleared his throat before staring at me. “I did not know how to end things with you, that was why I stayed back all this time.”
“What happened to the love you claimed you had for me? Was that a lie as well?”
Ciara scoffed and threw me a hateful look with eyes full of disdain, it was a pure contrast of the loving gaze her eyes had always had for me.
“You saw what I wanted you to see, can you leave now? It's not always about you, I'm trying to celebrate here,” she said.
One glance around and I noticed that the servers were gathering, all in a bid to get some juicy bits for gossip.
“You're right,” I closed my eyes and opened them after I counted to three in my head. “Have fun, you two.”
With that, I stood up and walked out of the restaurant as gracefully as I could. The moment I stepped out and felt the cold breeze hit my face, a tear escaped from my eyes.
I wiped it and got into my car, then drove back to my apartment. My phone rang the minute I took off my clothes, it was Estelle.
“Hey boo, I'm coming over to yours,” she ended the call before I could say another word.
Sighing out loud I took a shower trying to get my mind over the shock I just had, then changed into something comfy and went out to my sitting room.
I looked up when I heard someone at the door but hesitated to unlock it, as I gulped down a glass of whiskey. Within seconds, the door got unlocked — Estelle came in looking at me in a weird way.
“Why didn't you open the door for me?”
“You know the passcode,” I said with indifference.
She threw a look at me and the glass in my hand. “Why are you drinking? Did something happen?”
“No.”
Estelle dropped her bag on the nearest chair and sat down beside me on the floor. “What's going on, Ri?”
The betrayal hit me hard, the second she asked that question and I could not hold back the tears that danced out of my eyes.
I sniffled, trying to calm myself. “Ciara is getting married to Savvy.”
Estelle pushed me away and chuckled. “That's your man, Zariah. Why would Ciara be the one marrying him?”
“I saw him proposing to her, Elle,” hot tears flooded my face as I looked up at her. “What am I going to do?”
“You're being serious.” Estelle picked up her phone and called someone.
“What are you doing?” I asked in between tears.
“Calling Ciara obviously, what else?”
The thought of Savvy under her thumb, made me shudder in fear. “Don't.”
“She's not picking up,” Estelle said, ignoring me. “How could she do this to you, her best friend?”
We had always been three friends but I was closer to Ciara, which made this betrayal hurt me even more.
“What do I tell my mom? She's expecting me to get married soon, you know what she's like.”
I poured another shot and drank it in one go, before Estelle whisked the bottle away from me.
“This is not the time to worry about your mother, you're hurting girl.”
“Am I?” I asked with a humorless laugh. “I'm more concerned about what my mom will say, than my feelings right now.”
“Don't be that way,” she patted my head. “You can cry if you want to, I understand.”
I tried to hold it on, but before I could control myself I was wailing out loud and screaming my lungs out.
Four years of my life was just wasted for nothing, this was something I'll take forever to recover from. The face that I was oblivious to things happening under my nose made me hurt even more.
After an hour of getting Estelle's clothes soaked with tears, I got a hold of myself.
“Do you feel better?” She asked me.
“I'm good, I just need to—”
The sound of my phone ringing cut my words short, but it was nowhere in sight. “Where is your phone?”
“Uhmm,” I listened to the sound for a second, before remembering. “My bedroom.”
I was about to get up, when she held me down. “I'll get it, stay here.”
Relaxing back against the sofa, I told myself there was no time to be this pathetic. I had to bounce back and do it fast, my mom did not birth a weak woman.
“Zariah, you won't believe who texted you,” Estelle said, coming out with my phone in her hand.
“Is it my mom?”
“No, the witch Ciara.”
I threw my head back on the sofa and ran my hands through my hair. “What does she want?”
“I'm just going to read what she sent,” Estelle said, but the next words that came out of her mouth made me freeze. “Savvy and I have picked a date for the wedding, will you be my bridesmaid?”
Leo's pov.I had never been fond of weddings, because it had many people, noise and fake smiles.Today's wedding had all three and now, thanks to my little stunt, it had something else. Pure chaos.I glanced at Zariah, who was still staring at the ring on her finger as if she expected it to disappear. She looked beautiful, but I was not going to tell her that. It might come off as cheesy. Her wide brown eyes moved from the diamond to me, and I caught the exact moment she remembered she was supposed to be angry.I smiled as Zariah tried to put on an upset face, she looked even more beautiful when she was annoyed."You're enjoying yourself," she muttered."Trust me, you have no idea what level of enjoyment I'm on right now.""I hope you understand that I'm going to kill you."The fact that I found her threats cute, made me deepen my gaze on her eyes. "Will you at least let me enjoy our honeymoon first?"Her mouth hung open at how bold I was, making me laugh out in content. She was the
I stared at the man kneeling in front of me, wondering if I had somehow wandered into a dream.A very expensive, public dream because there was no way Leo Sanders was actually proposing to me.We had agreed on a simple arrangement—he would attend the wedding with me, pretend to be my boyfriend, and help me make my cheating ex regret the day he ever laid eyes on me.Now, the man was kneeling in front of hundreds of people, holding a diamond ring and asking me to marry him.“Say yes! Say yes! Say yes!” The guest started chanting, but my mom's voice was the loudest.I bent over and whispered to him. “What's the meaning of this?”"I'm only proposing to my girlfriend.""Your girlfriend?" I repeated under my breath. He smiled and somehow I found myself lost in it. "Would you prefer I call you my future wife?"I suddenly felt the urge to slap him and drag him to a corner and ask if he suffered a head injury on his way here, but neither option was available to me because everyone was watching
"Your brother?" I repeated before I could stop myself.Leo's arm remained around my waist, as he rested his fingers on the fabric of my green dress. "Something wrong, princess?" I stared at him like he was a lunatic. The man I had hired to accompany me to my ex-boyfriend's wedding had just turned out to be my ex's brother, yet he had the nerve to ask me if something was wrong."Leo," Savvy snapped, drawing our attention back to him. "I'm talking to you.""I can hear you." Leo's expression remained carefree. "You don't have to shout."A few guests exchanged glances, causing Savvy's frown to deepen. "What the hell are you doing here?""Attending a wedding. Do I need your permission to do that now?""Don't play games with me!"My hands reached for the champagne flutes but I almost choked when I heard Leo's comeback."Then stop asking ridiculous questions."Oh, this man is going to get me killed."Wait a minute." Ciara spoke, breaking the silence the two men were keeping. "Savvy, you kno
My hands were shaking as I held the phone close to my ears, still trying to process what Leo had just said."What do you mean something came up Leo?” My voice came out cracking in a way I hated."I know princess, I'm so sorry. Something very important came up and I can't help it."He ended the call before I could respond and for a minute, I was too stunned to react. I moved close to my window, just in time to see Savvy retreating to his car.“God, what was I expecting from a stranger?” I whispered under my breath as I fell to the floor.Thinking he might be pulling a prank on me, I called him back. Fifty times. It went straight to voicemail every single time.“This can't be happening,” I muttered to myself. It was only a few hours before the wedding and he canceled on me, so when Estelle called, panic was evident in my voice.“I hate this feeling.”“Whoa, whoa, slow down. What's wrong?” Estelle asked.“He's not coming.”She went quiet for sometime, before asking another question that
“What do I say now?” I showed the message.“Tell him how you feel about the wedding,” she responded without thinking. “He's being paid, so it's his job to make you satisfied now.”I bit my lower lip for two seconds, before letting it go. “Okay.”Estelle kept staring at me with curious eyes, as I continued texting my match on the site. He said his name was Leo and asked me to fill him in on what I wanted. My nosy friend had included that, I needed a man who was capable of making my ex feel like trash in my profile.“Leo seems very nice,” I blurted out.The crazy lady in the room with me, blinked fast as she drew closer. “Is that his name?”“Who else would I be talking about?” “You've gotten that sharp edge in your tone again, I missed that.”I stared at her and smiled. “Thank you for everything, Estelle. He agreed to do it.”“I'm so happy for you dear,” she said , before turning to her phone. “Go on, talk to your man.”“Haha! Funny, I'm sure that's not his position in my life.”“Yeah
It was three months later and I could not believe my eyes, but I was in the middle of a fitting room. Ciara's fitting room. Watching her try on her wedding dress.“Do you think I should use an off shoulder or V neck for the design?” She asked me with a smile.Every part of me was tempted to stab her with the dangling earrings she was having on, but I suppressed the thought.“Off shoulder is fine,” I said in an uninterested tone, as my eyes scanned the room. This was all because of my mother, Ciara had ran to her and explained things in ways I did not know. My perfect mother decided it was only fair to push me into doing it.“Show her you are the bigger person here,” my mom had said to my face, despite how much she knew I was hurting. My entire body wanted to scream out, ‘I don't want to be big here’ but I nodded and told her I will think about it.“Don't be that way,” she came over to me and touched my hand. “You know we are besties, tell me what you think will look best for me from y
