Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
That night, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep.

Brad's smug "I'm only doing this for your own good" face, the triumphant look in Tessa's eyes after she'd stolen my credit, and Dean's helpless hesitation all spun through my head on an endless loop.

I gave up on sleep, sat down in my study, and opened that email from Nebula Tech.

[Mr. Lowe, we've been following your research for some time. Nebula Tech is building an AI lab, and we urgently need someone of your caliber to set its direction. You're always welcome here. Just say the word, and we'll fast-track everything.]

Back then, I'd gotten too comfortable with my laid-back ways and didn't want to be tied down at a big corporation. On top of that, out of regard for Dean's friendship with my father, I'd never replied.

But now, it suddenly felt like there was nothing left at the institute worth holding on to.

I took a deep breath and typed out my reply: [Ms. Hargrove, my apologies for only replying now. May I ask whether the opportunity mentioned in your earlier email is still available?]

After sending it, my mind started to wander.

It had been so long. Who knew whether they even still needed me?

In less than a minute, the crisp chime of a new email rang out.

I half thought I'd misread it.

I opened the email. It was Bethany's reply, short and decisive: [Yes, our assessment hasn't changed. This position has been reserved for you all along! If it's convenient for you, we can move straight on to the next steps. We look forward to working with you!]

I leaned back in my chair and let out a long breath.

The boulder that had been pressing on my chest seemed to lift away in an instant.

I didn't reply right away, but in my heart, I'd already made my decision.

When I got back to the institute the next day, the atmosphere felt a little off.

Dean ran into me in the hallway, his face full of concern. "Tommy, don't take yesterday to heart. I've talked with Brad. I'll figure something else out."

I gave him a faint smile. "Mr. Perrin, I'm fine."

As I turned and walked away, I could feel Dean's eyes on my back.

I heard later that Dean went to see Brad again that morning, even more forceful than the day before. "Brad, I'm telling you for the last time, stay out of Tommy's business! I'm personally signing off on an exemption for his attendance. If there's any problem, it's on me!"

The result was predictable. Brad slammed his hand on the desk right then and there.

"Dean! You're trading principles for personal favors! If everyone were as undisciplined as Tommy, how would anyone get any work done? Discipline applies to everyone. It's not a green light just for him!"

Once again, the two of them parted on bad terms.

That afternoon, Brad, probably still fuming, deliberately paced back and forth through the office area. As he walked, he raised his voice and spoke with heavy sarcasm.

"Some people, huh? They think they're hot stuff just because they've got a few technical skills. So young, making 100,000 dollars a year, and still not satisfied! Do they really think they can reach the top in one leap?

"Let me tell you all something. If there's one thing this world has no shortage of, it's people who think too highly of themselves!"

My hand paused on the mouse for a split second. Then, as if nothing had happened, I went on scrolling through the code on my screen.

A hundred thousand a year? He probably assumed a scruffy tech nerd like me ought to be grateful for that kind of money.

That night, I called my parents and told them the whole story from beginning to end.

On the other end of the line, my father was silent for a moment. Then he spoke in a deep voice.

"Tommy, when I sent you to the institute, part of the reason was my friendship with Dean, and part of it was that I knew you hate being tied down. But if you feel it's no longer a good place for you to grow, then do what you think is right. I have your back."

My mother chimed in beside him, "Sweetheart, don't put yourself through this. You can shine anywhere you go."

After I hung up, my nose stung, and the last trace of hesitation vanished.

I opened my computer and replied to Bethany's email: [Ms. Hargrove, I accept the offer. Please let me know how to proceed with the next steps.]

After the ceremony, at the reception, I ran into Dean and Brad again.Dean was close to retirement now, and his hair had gone mostly white. As for Brad, he wore a rumpled, outdated polyester suit, and his hair had turned thin and gray. Among the sharply dressed crowd around him, he looked completely out of place.I stepped forward first and shook Dean's hand. "Mr. Perrin, it's been a long time. How have you been?"Dean gripped my hand tightly, his eyes turning a little red, and said over and over, "Good, good! Tommy, seeing you like this now, I... I'm so happy for you! What happened back then... I failed to protect you..."I shook my head and said sincerely, "Mr. Perrin, it's all in the past. I know the tough spot you were in. I don't blame you."Brad stood two steps away, watching us with a complicated expression. He couldn't bring himself to apologize, but he couldn't swallow that old grudge either. In the end, he just shot me a vicious glare and turned to leave. He walked ov

On the other end of the line, there was a long silence, and in the end, only a weary sigh.I heard later that Tessa, buckling under the enormous pressure, kept making mistakes. Eventually, she was transferred out of her core position to manage files in the records room.As for Brad, his mismanagement had caused major project delays, and his superiors called him in for a talk. Rumor had it they tore him to shreds in that meeting.A year later, I was about to take the stage as the keynote speaker at the International Artificial Intelligence Conference abroad.Among the sea of attendees in the audience, I unexpectedly spotted two familiar faces: Dean and Brad. They sat in a corner of the venue. The institute had probably sent them to learn from others and look for partnership opportunities.I could only imagine the looks on their faces when they'd seen my name on the agenda.Standing under the spotlight, I spoke fluently to the world's top experts, introducing our latest Polaris II

Dean knew the institute's good days were over.…My days at Nebula Tech were nothing like what I'd imagined. Or rather, they went far beyond anything I'd imagined.I had a private office overlooking the entire city skyline, a top-tier team of three PhDs and five master's graduates, and an R&D budget that was practically a blank check.Bethany told me, "Tommy, here, your only job is to put your talent to work. The company will take care of everything else."I threw out the outdated, conservative approaches from my institute days and boldly proposed an entirely new compute-in-memory architecture. The young people on my team were full of passion and creativity. We practically lived in the lab, day and night, and that feeling of fighting purely for the sake of the technology brought back a fire I hadn't felt in a long time.Just three months later, our first prototype chip, Polaris, successfully taped out.The test results stunned the entire tech world. On core image recognition ta

Every pair of eyes in the room swung toward Tessa at once. The smugness on her face froze instantly. Tongue-tied, she stammered, "W-well... the thing is... what Tommy reported... it wasn't... it wasn't very clear..."I stayed perfectly composed and even took a step forward, looking her straight in the eye. "Oh? Which parts weren't clear? You can point them out right now, and I'll explain them to you on the spot. But..."I shifted gears, a note of amusement creeping into my voice. "Didn't you tell Mr. Michielsen that my technical vision is narrow and limited, and that I depend on your guidance to get anything done? "Surely someone with your abilities doesn't need advice from someone like me, who's 'technically skilled but narrow-minded,' right?"Tessa's face flushed bright red. Her mouth hung open like a fish out of water, but she couldn't come up with a single question. To keep anyone from having ammunition against me, I'd written every one of those daily "reports" conscientious

I shook my head. "There's no need to trouble yourself, Mr. Perrin. I've already written my self-reflection."Brad and Dean both froze.Brad frowned and asked suspiciously, "Already written? When did you write it?"I didn't answer him. I simply turned and slowly drew a manila envelope from the briefcase I always carried with me.I walked up to Dean and handed him the envelope with both hands. My tone was calm, and there was even a hint of relief in it."Mr. Perrin, thank you for looking out for me these past few years."Dean's heart lurched. His fingers trembled slightly as he took the envelope, and his eyes fell on the front of it.Written there, neat and bold, were three large words: Letter of Resignation.A deathly silence fell over the entire office.Every pair of eyes was fixed on that thin envelope, as if it weren't a letter at all but a bomb with the pin just pulled. The smugness froze on Brad's face, Tessa's smile stiffened at the corners of her mouth, and Dean gripped

Since I'd made up my mind to leave, I no longer pushed back against anything Brad and Tessa threw at me. I simply took it all.But Brad still wasn't satisfied. He wanted to crush me even further. The institute's quarterly review assembly turned into a public shaming session Brad had tailor-made for me.In the large conference room, he stood on stage, spittle flying as he lectured everyone on the importance of discipline.Suddenly, the projection behind him switched, and a massive attendance spreadsheet filled the screen. My name was at the very top, followed by a long string of red numbers marking how many times I'd been late over the past quarter. That red was as glaring as blood."Everyone sitting here is the backbone of this institute, its elite," Brad said, his voice echoing through the hall as he pointed straight at my name on the screen. "But! There are always some people who think a bit of cleverness and a few technical skills give them the right to ignore discipline an
