“Please lower your head,” I whisper to Damien. He blinks once. His face is stoic, and I start to panic. He is about to say something embarrassing, and the entire room is going to laugh at me. He lowers his head, and our lips meet. My hands around his neck are shaking, but I pull an act of bravery and kiss this man I hated ever since I met him. He kisses me back, his grip around my waist tightens a bit. The kiss plus the background music makes everything more magical. It doesn’t feel like it’s for show anymore, I am enjoying this more than I should. Why does he have to be such a great kisser? I pull away, and I’m a little breathless. He is giving me that icy stare. Everyone claps, Rachel is nowhere in sight, and the song changes. “You know that you could’ve just kissed my cheek. Right?” He whispers. “Why did you bring your lips to mine?” “Because I didn’t want to embarrass you.” “How kind,” I roll my eyes. “Kindness is…” He shakes his head. “No, I can’t even say it.” “At least you are honest with yourself. But just for fun, I’m going to say it for you. Kindness is your middle name?” He shoots me a dirty look. “If you say that one more time…” “You know I could say it, and you would do nothing about it. So, will you please stop with the threats?” A ghost of a smile appears on his lips. I finally relax, and we dance. This time, my head is on his chest. He doesn’t say a word. I'm listening to his heartbeat, and I don't really want the night to end. When the song is over, everyone claps, and then we sit in our assigned seats, listening to long speeches about money, and I make a mental note to tease Damien about how his face is all lit up. After the speeches, it’s time to mingle, and I get introduced as his date to everyone we come across. His hand is on my waist most of the time when he speaks to his friends, but it is respectful, and every time we are not speaking to anyone, he lets go. This probably feels like torture to him. “Why are you introducing me as your date?” I ask. “Because if you are my date, no one will ask questions next time when I attend an event with someone else.” “You are proud of yourself for that?” He shrugs. “So, I didn’t get the job?” I don’t know why this hurts, but it does. This might have been my only chance, unless Linda whispers my name to one of her uncle’s rich friends. The problem is, the internet doesn't forget. When potential employers search my name, they find articles and videos about me that make them instantly reject my applications. “I think you knew that already, but I will pay you for tonight.” “Don’t bother,” I give him a faint smile. “The money is already in your account.” He hands me a glass of champagne as if we are having a casual conversation. “I’ll transfer it back.” “I knew you would say something like that,” he sighs. “So, I left no trace.” “I’ll send it to Linda to give it to you.” “Why are you so frustrating?” His jaw tightens. “You need the money.” He is right about that, but I feel guilty for taking the money he offered for me to stay away from Linda. I tried until I found her crying at my doorstep. “Control your facial expressions, sir,” I say to him. “There are people around, and we don’t want them to see the facial expression that you only present when you are speaking to me.” “I think it’s time for you to leave.” “I don’t care. You are the one who forced me to be in this room, anyway.” I walk away, blinking back the tears. When I’m outside, I sit next to a water fountain, and I take out my phone to request a cab. “You!” I cock my head to the side, looking for the source of the voice. Rachel is walking towards me, and as expected, she is furious. “You did this on purpose, didn’t you?” She hisses. “What did I do on purpose?” I try my best innocent face. “Don’t you dare give me that face or that attitude.” She wraps her hand around my forearm. “Ouch!” I try to yank my hand out of her grip. “Rachel, let her go!” Damien grumbles. I turn around to face him. “I was doing just fine, even before you got here.” “Really?” His eyes are on my arm. “It doesn’t look like it.” I open my mouth to protest, but there’s no need. Rachel’s fingers left their mark. “Are you doing this to spite me?” She asks Damien. “Because if that’s the case, you really won. You chose this harlot?” She points at me. “You went from a classy woman like me to her.”JeanetThe breakfast table is quiet, and I can see the way that Damien is shifting uncomfortably in his seat that he sort of wishes that he wasn't in this room. It's just the sound of forks and knifes and plates. I also don't even know what to say to make this less awkward. "That is crazy! How could you do this to me?" Linda is crying at the breakfast table."I don't have a choice, Linda.""But it's safer here than it is out there, why would you do something like that?" She looks from me to Damien. "Unless my uncle paid you again. Did he?""I understand you are upset, but you don't have to say such hurtful things.""I'm sorry," she mumbles. "It's okay," I chime in."But tell me, what are you going to do out there by yourself?" Her voice breaks. "I'll figure it out?" I half-ask."Please, stay. Uncle tell her to stay. Tell her we want her here. You do want her here, don't you?"Damien just nods in response. He doesn’t even look in my direction, and his nod is curt, it's almost unreco
DamienThe words slice through me like a knife. She might as well have carved out my heart, because the feeling is probably similar. "Jeanet?" My voice comes out hoarse and desperate. "Damien?" She sounds irritated. "You are breaking up with me?" "We've never been together, Damien." She rolls her eyes. My jaw drops, but I quickly pick it up off the floor. She's right, of course, but the way she's so emotionless as she says this hurts me more than I would like to admit. "Wait," she furrows her eyebrows. "We were never together. Were we?" I try to smile politely, but the only thing that happens is me pressing my lips together. "We were not," I manage to say. She sighs, and the relief that she feels is written on her face. "I appreciate everything you've done for me, Damien. You and I have come a long way, and it's safe to say we have gone from being enemies to..." she trails off. "Enemies to people who tolerate each other. So, at least I don't wish for you to choke on your diamo
JeanetI was led to a dark room in the basement for my disobedience, and I've been sitting in here, I don't know, for how long. In this room, at least I can move around, but it feels more like a prison cell. The boss lady, whoever her name is, reminded me over and over again that I should be grateful to Damien or I would regret trying to run away.I hear footsteps, and I rush to the mattress to sit and look innocent. The light is switched on, hurting my eyes, and both the kidnappers are standing in the doorway."You have no idea how much I'm tempted to put a bullet through your head." The guy looks at me, his face marred with disgust. "I would've done it if everyone weren't so afraid of Damien. You know, it really feels as if everyone practically worships that traitor.""Come on, we need to be patient. We will destroy him one day, and at least we know who we are going to use to do that." She places her hand around my arm, deliberately causing me pain. I wince, but I don't say a word.
Damien"We..." Tumi trails off. "We can't find the footage in five minutes.""Tell me you are joking," I chuckle in disbelief. "Tell me that this is a joke.""I promise you, Damien, that we'll find whoever did this, but we can't speed up the process of retrieving the CCTV.""My niece's... My friend has been kidnapped, and I want to find her, but this is all you can tell me?""I can get my security team to look for her; we will do it for free, and I promise...""No, thanks," I interject. "I'm good, and thanks for nothing. When I'm done with this, I'll find whoever deleted that footage, and God help them."Tumi shifts uncomfortably. "That is a threat, Damien.""I'm glad you see it for what it is." I storm off from the office, and the moment I get in the car, I call my number one suspect. "Where's Jeanet?" I ask as soon as my mother picks up the call. "There's no, 'Hello, mother, how are you? Have you forgotten your manners, or is this girl driving you crazy that much?'" "Mother! Wher
JeanetThe boss lady's rings, and then she speaks in a calm tone and expressionless face. After hanging up, she sighs as she stares at me. "I still don't understand why." She shakes her head. "Are you blackmailing him?" She raises her eyebrows, waiting for me to respond. I point at the tape on my mouth. "You are pretty, I admit that, but you are not captivating."She turns to my kidnappers, who are standing on the side and watching me with curious looks. "Remove her tape, I want to ask her a few questions." The kidnapping lady walks towards me and removes the tape as if she's removing a wax strip. I almost scream in pain, but I manage to keep it together. I refuse to give her the satisfaction that she hurt me. "So..." The boss lady smirks. "Are you blackmailing him?" "I'm not blackmailing him." I hold up my chin defiantly."Oh! Feisty, I see," she chuckles. "I never expected this."I've been tied to this chair for closer to a day, I'm exhausted and thirsty, but I can't sleep or dri
DamienI am sitting at the table for breakfast when Linda walks in the dining area alone. She freezes in the doorway and stares at the table, then she walks towards the table, her eyes filled with questions. "Where's Jeanet?" I ask her."I was about to ask the same question. Her bed is almost made, but she's not there.""Did you check the gym?""I looked everywhere for her, but she isn't around.""Did you call her?""Obviously, but her phone is in her room."A strange feeling of something that feels like fear moves through my body. Linda and I exchange a look that says we could be thinking the same thing."No!" His eyes widen. "No, no, no," she shakes her head. "Your security is tight, right? And it doesn't seem like she was forced out of her room. Maybe she went for a run.""Jeanet doesn't run.""Come and see her room."I walk to her room at a slower pace than how I usually walk, hoping to catch a glimpse of her and hoping she's around the house and Linda didn't see her. "It seems
Jeanet “Why are you still here?” Linda has just arrived from the lab, and she finds me in the library in the house. “I’m working.” I look up from the laptop. I am still working on my reports and looking through books about law. It’s been a while since I slept for more than three hours. I was
JeanetJi-Hwan is standing in the doorway, a paper bag in his hand. “Hi, beautiful.” He grins. I don’t know why, but I giggle like a high school girl before I say “hi” back. “Since you said you would be working, I thought I should bring you snacks.” “Who gave you my number?” I fold my arms and
Damien "Are you sure you didn't say or do anything to hurt her?" Linda eyes me suspiciously, and I throw her a dirty look in return. Jeanet has left and no one knows why. Linda said she left the party in a hurry, and there were tears in her eyes. Her words and accusatory looks makes me feel as if
Jeanet “We are not at work. So, you are not my boss right now. Do you have something to say? I would like to get back to what I was doing before you interrupted me.” “What were you doing?” “Watching p**n,” I roll my eyes. “If you want to get a reaction out of me, you won’t get any," he vi
