Chapter 2

M. June
Camilla's POV

The blizzard still hadn't let up by the time we made it back to the cabin. Antonio carried Simona inside while his two men walked on either side of them, shielding her from the wind and snow.

I trailed behind them. The prolonged exposure to the cold had slowed my movements. Every bone in my body ached, and I felt as though I might collapse at any moment.

Forcing myself through the pain, I struggled toward the cabin one step at a time. Antonio, who had already gone inside, turned back with an irritated expression. "Camilla, hurry up and get inside. We're letting too much cold air in, and Simona can't handle it."

I paused before taking another step toward the door, only to see Simona cling to Antonio's arm. "Antonio, I left my underwear in the RV, and I need it for tomorrow. Can you have Camilla go get it for me?"

Antonio turned to me. "Camilla, go back to the RV and get it. These two need to stay here and look after Simona."

The blizzard was still raging outside. I looked down at my fingers, red and numb from the cold. The RV was about a kilometer away. Sweat had broken out across my forehead from the pain, but the bitter wind had already frozen my face numb.

"Can't we ask the driver to bring the RV over?"

Antonio's expression darkened. "Camilla, we only rushed back here because you passed out. I'm just asking you to go get some clothes."

All I could do was pull my winter jacket tighter around myself and head back into the blizzard.

By the time I returned, Antonio and Simona were sitting on the couch watching television. The moment Simona saw me, she quickly got to her feet, a trace of malice flashing in her eyes. "Camilla, it's freezing outside. You're back already?"

Antonio slipped an arm around her shoulders and said casually, "She's always been pretty tough. Don't worry about her."

But that wasn't what he'd said five years ago, when we'd first gotten together.

Antonio was the head of a powerful crime syndicate, while I was an ordinary woman. When he started pursuing me, everyone questioned whether his feelings were genuine.

Then I was badly injured in a car accident and fell into a coma. Antonio stayed by my side for three days and nights without sleeping.

When I finally woke up, he pulled me tightly into his arms, his tears falling onto my clothes. "Sweetheart, I can't lose you. While you were unconscious, it hurt so much I thought I was going to die."

But a year ago, Simona's father died saving Antonio's life. Before he died, he entrusted his daughter to Antonio. From that day on, all the tenderness Antonio had once given me went to Simona instead.

In the middle of the night, the side effects of my targeted therapy medication hit me again.

A sharp pain tore through my chest, as if a blade had been driven straight into me.

I quickly swallowed a painkiller, but a moment later, I started vomiting. Blood poured from my mouth and nose, staining nearly the entire bathroom floor red.

I clutched my chest, struggling to breathe. I realized then that the pain wasn't only physical. It felt as though there was a hole torn through my heart as well.

Antonio's voice came from outside the door. "Simona's stomach is hurting again. Go get the painkillers."

Then came the distinct sound of footsteps moving away.

I forced myself to clean the blood from the floor. By the time I finished, it felt as though my soul had been drained from my body, leaving me weightless and hollow.

I could clearly feel myself getting weaker by the day.

The doctor had warned me that if I didn't get admitted to the hospital and start treatment soon, I might not even make it another ten days.

But my engagement party with Antonio was in three days.

I knew I would never become his wife. I wasn't going to make it that far.

Before coming here, I'd thought I could at least see the engagement party through. After five years together, I wanted to give our relationship a proper ending.

Now, suddenly, even the engagement party seemed pointless.

She had donated all her savings, and she'd thrown away everything she'd once kept at his place. It was almost as if the past five years had existed only in his imagination. There was barely anything left to prove Camilla had ever been part of his life. Still, Antonio refused to accept that she was gone.He started drinking every day and sending message after message to her social media account."Camilla, I was wrong. Please come back.""I got the dresses. I put yours in the closet. I threw the other one away.""I know I screwed up.""You're the only woman I love. I never should've crossed those lines with Simona. Please come back."But every message disappeared into sile

Third-Person POVAntonio opened the medical file. It contained a record of every follow-up appointment Camilla had attended and every medication she'd been prescribed. When he saw the dates, his fingers began to tremble. Tears slipped down his cheeks. His mind went back to the day they'd gone looking for the northern lights, when he'd sent Camilla back out into the blizzard to retrieve Simona's clothes.According to her records, Camilla had undergone targeted therapy that very day. Then he remembered her passing out. Instead of asking if she was alright, he'd accused her of making a fuss.Antonio closed the file and picked up the bucket list beside it.Camilla had written it on a small notepad. Some of the ink had bled where her blood had stained the paper, leaving parts of her handwriting blurred. There were only a few things on the list. See the northern lights with Antonio. Crossed out. Leave Bellarosa. Checked off. Say a proper goodbye to Antonio. Crossed out.The final one

Third-Person POV"Camilla!" Antonio came running toward Camilla and dropped to his knees beside the wheelchair. "Stop this, Camilla. I know you're faking it. You wanted me to come after you, didn't you?"His hands shook as he reached for her face, but before he could touch her, Camilla's caregiver slapped his hand away. "Sir, Ms. Benson has passed away. We need to take her back and make the necessary arrangements."Before she could leave, Antonio grabbed her arm. "She's my fiancee. She's coming with me!"The caregiver gave him a suspicious look. "According to Ms. Benson herself, she had no family. She already appointed an attorney to handle everything after her death."The color drained from Antonio's face. "No. That's impossible. I'll take her to the hospital. They can still save her!"The caregiver stepped between him and Camilla. "Ms. Benson had late-stage lung cancer. Her organs were already failing. The fact that she survived this long was remarkable. Please step aside and l

Camilla's POVThe ambulance stopped near one of the best places to see the northern lights. My caregiver lifted me into the wheelchair and pushed me around the area for a while. The night air was chilly. Wrapped in a wool coat, I gazed at the snow that blanketed the mountains year-round.This time, there was no one singling me out. No one forcing me into a blizzard to fetch something for them. All I wanted was to wait quietly for the northern lights. Then, suddenly, the entire sky seemed to ignite. Curtains of emerald green, violet, and pale pink rippled across the sky, twisting and dancing overhead. The lights never stayed still. They moved like silk caught in the wind, flowing endlessly across the darkness. In that moment, all I felt was awe. It was just a shame that I would only get to see something this beautiful once.I took out the bucket list I'd prepared. My first wish had been to see the northern lights with Antonio. I'd already drawn a huge X through that one.The sec

Third-Person POVMeanwhile, Antonio's phone rang. Thinking it was Camilla calling, he answered immediately."Hello, is this Mr. Miller? Your family member, Ms. Camilla Benson, who has late-stage lung cancer, completed a hospital transfer today. Were you aware of this?"Antonio's expression darkened instantly. He gave a cold scoff. "Did she put you up to this? Camilla was perfectly fine yesterday. There's no way she has late-stage lung cancer!"He was about to hang up when the caller spoke again. "Mr. Miller, Ms. Benson's diagnosis and medical bills were all sent to you..."Antonio ended the call before the person could finish. His grip on his phone tightened. After a moment, he opened his email. After my car accident, Antonio had linked his email address to my patient account, saying it would let him know about any changes in my condition as soon as possible. With trembling fingers, he opened his unread emails. The most recent was the hospital's approval of Camilla's transfer re

Camilla's POVThe next day, I packed up their luggage and asked the cabin manager to have it shipped out. Once I was done, I was about to get some rest when Antonio called."Camilla, did you tell the hotel's event coordinator that our engagement party was canceled?" His voice was loud, his anger barely restrained. Even through the phone, I thought I could hear Simona in the background.I sat on the cabin couch, silently enduring the pain spreading through my abdomen. "Yes. I canceled it."Antonio's breathing grew heavier. "Camilla! Can you stop acting like this? We only left without you because you were asleep! Simona almost cried herself sick over this! Call the hotel right now and tell them the engagement party is back on. Stop making a scene!"When he received the cancellation notice, his first reaction wasn't to ask me why I'd canceled our engagement. Instead, he blamed me for canceling it and for letting Simona find out.But the hotel would only have sent the cancellation no
