Author: Willow·hai
The day of the mating ceremony came quickly.

Adeline walked up to the altar in a white gown with a sweet smile on her face.

Becoming mate to the future Alpha was only part of the reason for her sweet smile.

What thrilled her even more was the thought of watching me hear, in front of everyone, that Damian had left for the battlefield.

By then, she was sure, my face would be even more panicked and helpless than hers had been in the last life.

But she waited and waited, and the ceremony hour was almost gone, and neither Damian nor I had appeared.

"Adeline, let's go ahead with ours. Taking you as my mate is the biggest dream I have.

"Your sister and my brother were probably just being stubborn. Neither of them really wanted this, and they're certainly not coming today. Let's forget about them," Kieran said.

Adeline shook her head, then turned to my father with her most wounded expression.

"Father, this is the most important day of my life. I don't want my sister to miss it. Send someone to bring her back before the ceremony ends, please?"

She only relaxed when he nodded.

After all, she had a very big gift ready for me.

Elsewhere.

I had already sent word to Damian, asking him to meet me at the border between our two packs.

He came exactly as I had asked.

But before we could say a word to each other, one of his men came running.

"Damian, it's bad. The Shadowmoor pack found out our mating ceremony was today, and they hit us while the guard was thin!"

Damian looked ashamed.

"I'm sorry, Cassia. If you called me here because you no longer want to be my mate, I won't stand in your way.

"I have to go fight for my pack now."

He turned to leave that instant.

I grabbed him and leaned close to his ear.

"Someone made a deal with Shadowmoor a long time ago. Today they came for your life.

"Be careful. I'll be waiting for you to come back and mate with me."

Damian, whose face never showed anything, went blank for a heartbeat, and then it burned scarlet.

"I, I understand. I'll come back quickly!"

I watched him go. Then the Dawnlight wolves found me.

"Lady Cassia, today is Adeline's great day, and the Alpha requires your attendance."

The one in front kept the courtesies, but he stood like a wolf ready to grab me.

Fine. I would go and see what else she had prepared.

By the time I reached the altar the ceremony was nearly over.

The mood in the hall was thin. Most of the male wolves of Brightvale were missing.

So they had gotten word of the Shadowmoor attack too.

Adeline's eyes lit up when she saw me, and a second later she arranged her face into righteous outrage.

She dropped to her knees in front of my father and the Alpha of Brightvale.

"Father, it has gone too far. I can't cover for my sister any longer!

"Shadowmoor attacked today and slipped past our patrols without a problem, and it is all because my sister made a deal with them!"

Both Alphas went dark in the face at once.

"Is that true? Why would Cassia do such a thing?"

Adeline set her teeth.

"Of course it's true. She did all of it because she's jealous of me. She's in love with my mate!"

Kieran helped her up and spoke coldly, "None of this is your fault. She is the one who should be kneeling."

He had plainly decided to back every word she said.

The wolves around me turned furious eyes on me.

But I stayed calm.

"What proof do you have that I did it?"

Adeline stared at me as if she could not believe her ears.

"Cassia, are you really going to argue your way out of this?

"Yesterday someone saw you meeting with a Shadowmoor wolf with their own eyes, and they recorded it. Stop arguing, will you?

"Admit it now, and I'll speak for you."

So that was why she had needed me at the ceremony.

Pinning a deal with Shadowmoor on me would not only keep me out of Brightvale, it would get me driven out of Dawnlight.

Two birds with one stone. A fine plan.

But I was not afraid. I said it plainly, "But yesterday I spent the whole day at the Brightvale camp, watching my future mate Damian drill his warriors. The warriors all saw me. Surely they haven't all gone to the front?"

Several warriors in the hall seemed to remember something, but Kieran cut them off.

"I was at the camp yesterday too, and I didn't see Cassia. Did any of you?"

His eyes went hard on them. The feet that had started to step forward pulled back, and they answered as one, "We did not see Cassia."

Kieran's voice was ice.

"The facts are clear enough. By pack law, anyone who conspires with an enemy is banished for life."

He put an arm around Adeline's waist.

"But for Adeline's sake, if you repent sincerely, there is still room for mercy."

I looked over everyone there, and then at Kieran.

"You lie better every time you open your mouths. I can't out-talk you, but I won't confess to something I didn't do.

"I'll wait for Damian. He can prove I'm telling the truth."

I turned to my father. "Father, surely you don't believe your daughter would betray the pack, do you?"

His face was ashen. Before he could speak, a warrior burst in from outside, covered in blood. "Alpha, it's bad! Damian has fallen! Shadowmoor has broken through!"

My father stared down at Evelyn in his arms as though he could not believe her."It really was you?"Evelyn flinched and clung to his arm, sobbing out her case."I only loved you too much. I could see that you liked me."But as long as that woman was alive, you were never going to take me as your mate. You wouldn't even have me in secret!"What was I supposed to do? What is so wrong with going after the love I wanted?"I laughed coldly."There is nothing wrong with going after love. But you should not have built yours on someone else's bones."Evelyn deliberately harmed one of her own. By pack law, she is exiled to the Abyss, and she will never set foot outside it again!"She held on to my father and would not let go.But she was no match for the warriors' strength, and before long two of them had hold of her and were taking her to the Abyss.Anger and reluctance fought across my father's face, and in the end the ache for her won."Cassia, it was all so long ago. Couldn't you...""No.

Kieran gave a short, contemptuous snort."If you want to take this daughter away, trade me the other one."The day Cassia agrees to be my mate, I'll cut Adeline loose."My father's grip on Adeline's hand went slack. He knew perfectly well that he could no longer decide anything for me.Adeline dropped to her knees and begged, "Father, you're the only one who can help me. You've always loved me best."He looked at her like that and reached out on instinct to lift her up.But before he could touch her, he pulled his hand back.He left alone. After careful thought, my father decided to give Adeline up.He did love that daughter, but set against the pack, she weighed too little. He knew that walking out that door finished her, that she would spend her life tearing at Kieran and being torn at in return. But as a father he judged that he had done what he could, and that today was her own doing.Above all he could not afford to offend Cassia, or let the pack be ruined by his own hand.So the

My hand stopped on the door handle. My voice went cold."What do you mean? Someone killed my mother?"I could barely remember anything about her. The little I had came from wolves who had known her well. They said my mother was decisive and clear-eyed.More than once I had thought that she was not the kind of wolf who would accept a mate simply because the Moon Goddess had arranged it.She would have thought it through carefully before she took my father. But if she understood that he did not love her, why would his coldness have broken her?The question I had carried for years was finally about to be answered. My father nodded."Someone dosed your mother with wolfsbane."In that instant it was as though my whole body had dropped into an ice pit.Everyone who had known her said she loved me, that she spent a long time choosing my name, that she sewed me stacks of tiny clothes while she carried me.She should have had the chance to watch me grow up.I grabbed him by the collar."Who! Before I ever met Kieran, I was training in secret when wolves from another pack ambushed me.Damian happened to be nearby.Maybe he recognized the markings on my clothes and knew our two packs had always been friendly. Whatever the reason, he stepped in and helped me finish them.I will say plainly that he was the best looking wolf I had ever seen. There was no chance I felt nothing. But his expression was cold as ice, and there was no warmth in anything he said.I asked around and learned he was one of the heirs to the Brightvale Alpha, and the son his father valued most. They said he had been leading warriors into battle since he was very young, and that what he despised most were the lazy and the unambitious.I happened to be both.So I put the idea away.Later I got to know Kieran, and when I went to Brightvale to see Kieran I would catch sight of Damian now and then.Yet every time, he turned and walked off the moment he saw me.I assumed he could not stand me.Then he died in ba

I looked up.A hard, resolute face filled my sight. There was still blood on him."Damian! You didn't lie to me. You came back."I reached out at once to check him over."Where are you hurt? How bad is it?"Damian caught my hands, and the tips of his ears quietly went red."Not bad. Most of it belongs to the enemy."He could say what he liked. I was not letting it go."I want to see your wounds."His throat moved and he turned his face away."Later, when we're back. There are people everywhere here."Only then did I remember that we were still on the altar, and the warriors were still waiting for my judgment on Kieran and Adeline.Kieran's eyes had gone red by then."Cassia! You're my mate, you can't care about him!"Adeline slapped him hard across the face."Are you insane! You just took me as your mate!"She had always been proud. She had to be the one doing the rejecting; she could never bear to be rejected herself.Kieran had forgotten every word he had said about loving Adeline. H

Watching the Elders bow to me one after another, Kieran could barely get the words out."How can you possibly be the Grand Elder?"He clutched his head and sank into his memories, coming apart in front of everyone.Adeline's eyes went round."You're lying! I grew up with you. You're worthless! There's no way you're the Grand Elder!"My father frowned as well."Do you have any idea how serious a crime it is to impersonate the Grand Elder? You cannot dodge a charge like this by inventing something worse!"Before I could say anything, the other nine Elders stepped forward together, their voices heavy."Do you think that we no longer know our own Grand Elder?"Or do you think the decision of the Moon Goddess is something you are fit to question?"They could throw whatever they liked at me. They could not ignore the Elders.I laughed softly."Five days ago, my father stood outside my door and asked me whether he would win if he attacked another pack after the mating ceremony."The day befor
