Adeline pursed her lips.

"Cassia, you don't have to do this. Nobody's going to laugh at you."

Contempt flashed through Kieran's eyes.

"Don't worry, Cassia. For your sister's sake, if no one ever takes you, we'll still take you in."

My father's frown pulled tighter.

They all thought I was talking out of temper, scraping together whatever dignity I had left.

But from the moment Adeline said yes, I knew that even if I had wanted Kieran, I could never have taken him.

My mother was the mate the Moon Goddess chose for my father.

She pulled at him in a way he could not resist, and he hated that the choice had been made for him, so he came to dislike her for it.

My mother was a proud wolf. She could not bring herself to bow and please anyone, so she kept everything shut inside.

She died not long after I was born.

Adeline was born to my father's second mate.

That one he had courted himself, and the two of them were happy.

From the day Adeline was born, he was hard on her.

He hired six tutors and demanded that she excel at everything, and even when she was injured or sick, her daily training was never shortened.

With me it was different. He always said I had lost my mother when I was too young.

He could not bear to see me suffer even a little, so he forbade me to learn anything. All I had to do was be happy.

Everyone said he spoiled me and treated Adeline too harshly.

But only I knew the truth. He was raising me to be useless so that the heir he had chosen would look brilliant beside me.

So whatever Adeline truly wanted, he would never give to me.

I let my eyes drift over the faces in the hall, and stopped on Kieran's brother.

"Damian, will you be my mate?"

Before he could answer, Adeline burst out laughing.

"Damian is one of the heirs to the Brightvale pack. You can't do a single thing. What makes you think he'd take you as his mate?"

Kieran sneered along with her, "Don't humiliate yourself. My brother doesn't collect garbage."

Whatever my faults, it was not for Kieran, an outsider, to list them.

My father spoke up quickly to stop it. "Adeline, don't talk about your sister that way.

"Kieran, do not think that being about to become my daughter's mate gives you the run of my hall."

The words were a warning, but the look he gave Adeline was pure tenderness.

By the time he turned back to me, his face was calm again.

"Your sister's words are harsh, but they are also true. Don't push for something that..."

But before he could finish, a voice cut him off.

"I will."

Damian, who had kept his head down and said nothing all this time, finally spoke. "I will take Cassia as my mate."

The whole hall went still.

Every wolf knew I was lazy and useless, without a single survival skill, and they all thought I would only drag Damian down.

Even his own father, the Alpha of Brightvale, forgot we were standing right there and rushed to talk him out of it.

"Damian, look at her clearly. That woman has nothing but a pretty face. How can you choose her?

"You should take someone like Adeline as your mate."

But Damian was perfectly calm.

"I want only Cassia."

"They both want it, so we elders should not stand in their way!"

While the Alpha of Brightvale had not yet refused outright, my father hurried to seal it.

Damian was the one he had wanted all along, and since Adeline did not want him, handing him to me was better than letting an outsider have him.

The Alpha of Brightvale flushed red, but he knew this was not the moment for a fight.

He had no choice but to swallow it and agree.

Both mating ceremonies were set for the middle of the following month.

My father took Adeline and me back to our pack.

On the way out, Adeline slammed her shoulder into mine.

"You think mating with Damian makes you something? You'll never match me, not in this whole life!"

I was not angry. I smiled instead.

The harder she pushed, the more it showed she was rattled.

In my last life she had chosen Damian too, and Damian had refused her flat.

Even when his father forced him to take her, he left for the battlefield on the day of the ceremony.

The sad part was that he would die out there, sold out by one of his own men.

She thought I would end up exactly where she had. Damian falls, Brightvale calls me cursed, I get shipped back to Dawnlight and spend my life with my head down.

What she did not know was that I had come back too, and I was not going to let Damian die.

My father stared down at Evelyn in his arms as though he could not believe her."It really was you?"Evelyn flinched and clung to his arm, sobbing out her case."I only loved you too much. I could see that you liked me."But as long as that woman was alive, you were never going to take me as your mate. You wouldn't even have me in secret!"What was I supposed to do? What is so wrong with going after the love I wanted?"I laughed coldly."There is nothing wrong with going after love. But you should not have built yours on someone else's bones."Evelyn deliberately harmed one of her own. By pack law, she is exiled to the Abyss, and she will never set foot outside it again!"She held on to my father and would not let go.But she was no match for the warriors' strength, and before long two of them had hold of her and were taking her to the Abyss.Anger and reluctance fought across my father's face, and in the end the ache for her won."Cassia, it was all so long ago. Couldn't you...""No.

Kieran gave a short, contemptuous snort."If you want to take this daughter away, trade me the other one."The day Cassia agrees to be my mate, I'll cut Adeline loose."My father's grip on Adeline's hand went slack. He knew perfectly well that he could no longer decide anything for me.Adeline dropped to her knees and begged, "Father, you're the only one who can help me. You've always loved me best."He looked at her like that and reached out on instinct to lift her up.But before he could touch her, he pulled his hand back.He left alone. After careful thought, my father decided to give Adeline up.He did love that daughter, but set against the pack, she weighed too little. He knew that walking out that door finished her, that she would spend her life tearing at Kieran and being torn at in return. But as a father he judged that he had done what he could, and that today was her own doing.Above all he could not afford to offend Cassia, or let the pack be ruined by his own hand.So the

My hand stopped on the door handle. My voice went cold."What do you mean? Someone killed my mother?"I could barely remember anything about her. The little I had came from wolves who had known her well. They said my mother was decisive and clear-eyed.More than once I had thought that she was not the kind of wolf who would accept a mate simply because the Moon Goddess had arranged it.She would have thought it through carefully before she took my father. But if she understood that he did not love her, why would his coldness have broken her?The question I had carried for years was finally about to be answered. My father nodded."Someone dosed your mother with wolfsbane."In that instant it was as though my whole body had dropped into an ice pit.Everyone who had known her said she loved me, that she spent a long time choosing my name, that she sewed me stacks of tiny clothes while she carried me.She should have had the chance to watch me grow up.I grabbed him by the collar."Who! Before I ever met Kieran, I was training in secret when wolves from another pack ambushed me.Damian happened to be nearby.Maybe he recognized the markings on my clothes and knew our two packs had always been friendly. Whatever the reason, he stepped in and helped me finish them.I will say plainly that he was the best looking wolf I had ever seen. There was no chance I felt nothing. But his expression was cold as ice, and there was no warmth in anything he said.I asked around and learned he was one of the heirs to the Brightvale Alpha, and the son his father valued most. They said he had been leading warriors into battle since he was very young, and that what he despised most were the lazy and the unambitious.I happened to be both.So I put the idea away.Later I got to know Kieran, and when I went to Brightvale to see Kieran I would catch sight of Damian now and then.Yet every time, he turned and walked off the moment he saw me.I assumed he could not stand me.Then he died in ba

I looked up.A hard, resolute face filled my sight. There was still blood on him."Damian! You didn't lie to me. You came back."I reached out at once to check him over."Where are you hurt? How bad is it?"Damian caught my hands, and the tips of his ears quietly went red."Not bad. Most of it belongs to the enemy."He could say what he liked. I was not letting it go."I want to see your wounds."His throat moved and he turned his face away."Later, when we're back. There are people everywhere here."Only then did I remember that we were still on the altar, and the warriors were still waiting for my judgment on Kieran and Adeline.Kieran's eyes had gone red by then."Cassia! You're my mate, you can't care about him!"Adeline slapped him hard across the face."Are you insane! You just took me as your mate!"She had always been proud. She had to be the one doing the rejecting; she could never bear to be rejected herself.Kieran had forgotten every word he had said about loving Adeline. H

Watching the Elders bow to me one after another, Kieran could barely get the words out."How can you possibly be the Grand Elder?"He clutched his head and sank into his memories, coming apart in front of everyone.Adeline's eyes went round."You're lying! I grew up with you. You're worthless! There's no way you're the Grand Elder!"My father frowned as well."Do you have any idea how serious a crime it is to impersonate the Grand Elder? You cannot dodge a charge like this by inventing something worse!"Before I could say anything, the other nine Elders stepped forward together, their voices heavy."Do you think that we no longer know our own Grand Elder?"Or do you think the decision of the Moon Goddess is something you are fit to question?"They could throw whatever they liked at me. They could not ignore the Elders.I laughed softly."Five days ago, my father stood outside my door and asked me whether he would win if he attacked another pack after the mating ceremony."The day befor
