XVI. The seer

I have been following the aura for about fifteen minutes when we get to a lake. Here I lose track of the aura, but I can tell the rouge is here. I can hear his heartbeats and feel his breath on my skin. My instinct tells me he is above us, in the trees. I tug William by his sleeve and point up at the three. He studies the canopy for a moment and nods. We try to move as silently as we can on the snow. We keep checking the canopy, but we can’t see anything.

A minute later, from above, drops the rogue. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to react because he drops behind Williams and gets a hold of him, putting a hunter’s knife at his neck. The rogue is not as tall as William, but he looks strong.

“Think you can beat me, pups? I will kill you before anyone else can get here.”
