Chapter 68

I couldn't help but smile at his earnestness. He was worried, understandably so, and his way of dealing with it was to make sure I was okay. It was endearing, and I found myself appreciating his efforts, even if they were a bit or rather a lot much.

As the day came to a close, I found myself leaning into Rurac, my head resting on his chest. He wrapped his arm around me, pulling me closer as we settled in for the night. His hand rested on my stomach, and I knew he was already wishing to be able to feel those four tiny beings.

"I'm here for you, Alyssa," he whispered, his breath ruffling my hair. "Every step of the way."

I looked up at him, my eyes meeting his. "I know, Rurac. And I appreciate it. I appreciate you."

I woke up the next morning with a jolt, my eyes fluttering open as a wave of nausea washed over me. My head throbbed and my stomach churned violently, forcing me to bring out the food I had eaten the day before. I knew I had to move quickly, so I threw off the cove
