Kaelen led her through the Citadel's winding corridors, his pace swift and purposeful.

Elena followed close behind, her heart hammering against her ribs. Twenty years. Twenty years later she mourned her mother. Twenty years she had believed the woman was dead, slaughtered in the Massacre of the Night like the rest of her family.

But she was alive. Trapped in the Citadel's dungeons. Held captive by General Viktor.

"How long have you known?" Elena demanded, her voice sharp.

Kaelen didn't slow. "I found out two hours ago. Viktor's second-in-command confessed during an interrogation. He told me everything."

"And you didn't tell me immediately?"

"I needed to verify." He glanced back at her, his expression grim. "I couldn't give you false hope, Elena. Not when the Blood Moon is tomorrow."

False hope. She understood. But the anger still burned in her chest.

They descended a narrow stone staircase, the air growing colder and damper with each step. The walls were slick with moisture. Torches flickered in iron sconces, casting dancing shadows across the rough-hewn stone.

The dungeons stretched before them a labyrinth of cells and corridors, each one more oppressive than the last. Elena's wolf whined in protest, sensing the centuries of pain and despair that soaked into the very walls.

Kaelen stopped before a heavy iron door, reinforced with silver runes. He pulled a key from his pocket and inserted it into the lock. The mechanism clicked, and the door swung open with a rusty groan.

Inside, the cell was small and dark. A single cot sat in the corner, its blankets threadbare and stained. A woman lay on it, her frail body curled into a protective ball.

Elena's breath caught.

The woman's hair was white not the silver of age, but the pale white of extreme trauma. Her face was lined with deep wrinkles, her cheekbones sharp and hollow. But her eyes when they fluttered open were silver-blue.

The same shade as Elena's own.

"Mama?" Elena whispered, her voice breaking.

The woman's eyes widened. Her cracked lips parted, and a sound escaped her throat, a soft, broken gasp.

"Elena?" Her voice was barely a whisper, raspy from disuse. "My baby? Is it really you?"

Elena rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside the cot. She reached for her mother's hand, clutching it against her chest. The woman's fingers were cold and fragile, like bird bones wrapped in papery skin.

"I'm here," Elena sobbed. "I'm here, Mama. I found you."

The old queen Seraphina stared at her daughter with tears streaming down her face. Her hand trembled as she reached up to touch Elena's cheek.

"You look just like me," she whispered. "When I was young. Before they took everything."

Kaelen stood in the doorway, his massive frame filling the entrance. His face was unreadable, but his eyes betrayed a flicker of pain.

"I'll give you a moment," he said quietly. He stepped back, pulling the door halfway closed.

Elena barely noticed him leave. All her focus was on her mother.

"How are you alive?" she asked, her voice shaking. "They told me you died in the massacre."

Seraphina's eyes darkened. "Viktor saved me. Not out of mercy, but out of cruelty. He wanted leverage. He kept me alive so that if your father ever returned, he could use me against him."

"My father?" Elena's heart lurched. "He's alive too?"

Seraphina shook her head slowly, tears spilling down her cheeks. "No, my love. He died protecting us. He shielded me with his body while I ran. I watched him fall."

Elena's chest constricted. She had grown up believing she was an orphan, a foundling left at the Silvermoon border. She had never known her parents. Never known she had a father who died for her.

"Viktor locked me in this cell," Seraphina continued, her voice trembling. "He fed me just enough to keep me alive. He visited me once a year to remind me that I was nothing, that my bloodline was dead, my kingdom was gone, and my daughter was probably dead in a ditch somewhere."

Elena squeezed her mother's hand. "I'm not dead. I'm here. I have children of my own twins. Leo and Lily. They're four years old."

Seraphina's eyes widened. "Twins? You have heirs?"

"Yes." Elena's voice cracked. "But they're sick. Silver Sickness. The Blood Moon ritual is tomorrow. I have to save them."

A flicker of something fear, perhaps, or recognition crossed Seraphina's face.

"The Blood Moon ritual," she repeated. "You know what it requires?"

"Blood from a Lycan King and an Ancient Alpha." Elena paused. "I'm the Ancient Alpha. My bloodline is the key."

Seraphina closed her eyes, her face pale. "The ritual will drain you, Elena. It could kill you."

"I don't care." Elena's voice was fierce. "I'll do whatever it takes to save my children."

Her mother opened her eyes, tears spilling down her cheeks. "You have your father's stubbornness. He said the same thing when he faced Viktor's army. He didn't care about his own life, only about protecting us."

Elena leaned forward, pressing her forehead against her mother's. "Tell me what to do. Tell me how to stop Viktor. How to save my children."

Seraphina's hand tightened around hers. "Viktor is planning something. He's been building an army of rogues for years, waiting for the right moment. The Blood Moon is powerful magic; he'll try to use it to destroy the Citadel and claim the throne."

"And Kaelen?"

"Kaelen is not his father." Seraphina's voice was firm. "He's been trying to atone for his family's sins. I've watched him from this cell. I've seen him free slaves, rebuild alliances, open borders. He loves you, Elena. And he will protect you and your children even if it costs him his life."

Elena's throat tightened. She didn't want to trust Kaelen. She didn't want to believe he could be different from the monsters who had murdered her family.

But her mother was telling the truth. She could see it in her eyes.

The cell door creaked open. Kaelen stood in the doorway, his face pale, his hands clenched at his sides.

"Elena," he said, his voice urgent. "We have to go. Viktor's scouts have been spotted near the outer walls. The rogues are coming."

Elena's blood ran cold. "Now? They're attacking tonight?"

"The Blood Moon is tomorrow." Kaelen's eyes flashed silver. "Viktor wants to eliminate you before the ritual can take place. If you die, the Ancient Alpha bloodline dies with you. He'll have won."

Seraphina grabbed Elena's arm with surprising strength. "Go. Protect your children. Protect yourself. I'll be fine. I've survived twenty years in this cell. I can survive one more night."

Elena hesitated. She couldn't leave her mother. Not after just finding her.

But Lily and Leo were alone in their suite. And Viktor was coming.

"I'll come back for you," Elena promised, pressing a kiss to her mother's forehead. "I swear it."

Seraphina smiled a weak, trembling smile that broke Elena's heart. "I know you will, my love. You're a queen now. And queens keep their promises."

Elena stood, her legs shaking. Kaelen reached for her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers.

"We're going to make it," he said softly. "All of us."

She looked into his obsidian eyes, the eyes of a hunter, a tyrant, a monster. And she saw something she hadn't expected. Hope.

"I trust you," she whispered, the words barely audible.

Kaelen's breath caught. His hand tightened around hers.

Then they ran.

The Citadel was chaotic when they emerged from the dungeons.

Guards shouted orders, their voices echoing through the corridors. Servants scrambled, their faces pale with fear. The silver fire moat blazed brighter than ever, a defensive barrier that wouldn't hold for long.

Elena raced to her suite, Kaelen at her side. She threw open the door and rushed to the twins' room.

Leo and Lily were huddled together on the bed, their eyes wide with terror. Lily's humming power surged, a defensive vibration that made the air buzz. Leo had shifted partially his fangs bared, his claws extended, his silver eyes glowing with deadly intent.

"Mama!" Lily screamed, reaching for her.

Elena scooped them both into her arms, holding them against her chest. "I'm here. I'm here. We're going to be okay."

Kaelen crouched beside them, his massive frame shielding them from the door. "The rogues are breaching the outer wall. We have to move now."

"We can't go out there," Elena said, her voice shaking. "It's too dangerous."

"We have no choice." Kaelen's eyes met hers. "The Blood Moon is in twelve hours. If Viktor kills you before the ritual, Leo and Lily will die. We have to get to the ritual chamber; it's the only place in the Citadel that Viktor can't penetrate."

Elena looked at her children. Leo was trembling, his claws still extended. Lily was humming frantically, her golden eyes glowing bright.

"What's the ritual chamber?" she asked.

"An ancient sanctuary," Kaelen said. "Built by your ancestors. Protected by blood magic that Viktor can't break. We'll be safe there until the Blood Moon rises."

Elena nodded, her jaw set. "Then let's go."

Kaelen lifted Leo into his arms, and Elena grabbed Lily. They ran through the burning Citadel, past fallen guards and shattered windows, toward the heart of the fortress.

The ritual chamber was deep underground, hidden beneath layers of stone and magic. Kaelen pushed open the heavy iron door, and they stumbled inside.

The chamber was vast, its ceiling lost in shadow. Ancient carvings covered the walls, depicting wolves and Lycans entwined in eternal battle and eternal peace. A stone altar stood in the center, bathed in the faint glow of moonlight that filtered through a crystal skylight above.

Kaelen set Leo down on the altar's edge, and Elena gently placed Lily beside him. The twins held hands, their small faces pale but defiant.

"We're here," Kaelen said, his voice echoing in the vast chamber. "We made it."

But even as he spoke, the doors exploded inward.

General Viktor strode through the smoke, his silver armor gleaming, his eyes burning with madness. Behind him, a horde of rogues surged forward, their fangs bared, their claws ready.

"Hello, King Kaelen," Viktor said, his voice dripping with smug satisfaction. "I hope you're ready to die."
