Making a terrible first impression had never been part of the plan. After graduating from college, Milner’s was my first work place. For over two years, I had worked there and made the best impressions on my seniors. It was how I had managed to rise to the position of Junior Actuarial Manager and made it as a junior executive.
Now, a new era was about to start at Milner insurance and it seemed like I was destroying everything I had built? There was a possibility that Mr. Carrington would want to change some of the staff.
After pretending to be at the reception for a work issue and this, I was sure I was close to number one in Mr. Carrington’s staff-to-fire list. That was if I wasn’t number one.
Mr. Carrington was a very eloquent man and everyone listened to his words attentively. I looked around and saw that everyone was looking at the man and no one was murmuring. Harry who was fond of making jokes with the former CEO’s son during staff meetings was now silent as a grave.
The meeting was so tense that by the time it ended, everyone felt relived. Mr. Carrington seemed to be a very serious man. He had not smiled throughout the meeting. I wondered if he knew how to laugh. If I hadn’t gone to that party in the woods, I would have thought everyone from Misenium was grumpy.
Harry and I were close friends. We had started working at the same time and so bonded easily due to facing similar struggles.
“Things are about to get tough around here,” Harry said as we entered my office.
“Good morning, Harry.” Kim said.
Harry frowned. “That’s Mr. Smith to you.”
He followed me to my office and sat on the chair opposite mine.
My office was extremely neat and everything was in order. There was a table with two chairs, one in front and the other behind it. On the tabletop was a computer. There were folders, papers, pens and other office stationary on the other side of the table. There was also a framed photograph of me at her graduation with my parents. Next to it was another photo of me in a red jersey and shorts of the same color, carrying a football. Behind me was my best friend who had a very wide smile and was wearing the same kind of clothes.
Harry placed a bundle of papers on the table. “Could you please sign these for me? You don't have to read through them.”
“What, you want to steal from me now?” I joked.
“Like you have any money in your tiny bank account?” he scoffs. “Are you done paying off student loans?”
“Haha,” I said. “I should be asking you.”
I stared at Harry longer than I should. I’d always wondered why I never fell in love with him. Harry was great and could be the perfect guy for me. He was also my best friend at work. Maybe that was it. I valued our friendship a lot and thought it would be ruined if we started dating.
I lowered my head and started signing.
“By the way, have you finished your presentation for Friday?” Harry asked.
“I haven't started yet,” I told him. “I had a lot of work to do. Now, that Kim is here, I'll be able to finish everything in time.”
I had been swamped with a lot of work after Aaron went missing. They had not yet found a suitable replacement. It was why I had ended up requesting for an assistant to help me with the smaller matters while I dealt with the big issues.
“You complain about work a lot,” he said, collecting the signed documents. “I wonder why they haven't fired you yet.”
“Because I'm the most competent employee in this company,” I grinned. “Trust me, when I manage to convince the CEO that we need to have the employee of the month award, I'll be the first to win. Shit, I forgot that Milner is now gone.”
“Yeah, you’re going to have to be more careful with this one. Forget Milner who used to love you like a daughter, or was there more to that? Sometimes I wonder if there was something going on behind the scenes. I mean he was always too nice to you.”
I chuckled. “Jealousy doesn’t suit you, Harry.”
“Okay, I’ll pretend that I believe you. See you later.”
He laughed and stood up before striding out of the room. When he was gone, I went to ask Kim to set up a meeting with one of our clients. There was something wrong with his bank account.
“He's really handsome,” Kim said, probably just to see how she I would react.
“Yeah, I guess.” I smiled. I was hoping she was not about to set her eyes on my friend. Although, Harry really needed a woman, Kim was not the type I felt he should settle for. He needed someone less evil.
After giving her instructions, I went back to my office and opened my email. My eyes narrowed when I saw the name Zane Carrington.
“Oh my goodness!” I said as I opened the email, eager to see what Zane wanted to say to me.
“Come to my office tomorrow. 10 am. Keep time and doesn’t tell anyone about this.”
I leaned back against my chair, shocked to the core. When the shock wore off, fear set in as I wondered what Zane Carrington could possibly want from me. I grabbed my phone and dialed Anna’s number before remembering that he had said I shouldn’t tell anyone.
Well, that was going to be hard. Anna was my best friend and we shared everything about our lives. It was like this man had arrived to cause chaos in my life.
I remembered how good he had looked and found myself smiling. The fear of getting fired reduced as I considered other possibilities. After minutes of allowing myself to enjoy beautiful fantasies, I knocked myself back to the real world.
There was no way on earth that meeting could be about something good. After my terrible first impression, I had to prepare for the worst.
“Why did I have to get the worst assistant in the world?” I took a sip of my coffee and installed the mug back on the table. “It hasn't even been a full week but I'm already thinking I should've never hired her.” From the start, Kim had given off a bad vibe and I knew I should be wary of her. At first, she was too nice to me in a way that came of as fake. If she thought her acting was good, she was terribly wrong. “You're the one who wanted an assistant,” Anna, my best friend shrugged and drunk her tea. “So stop complaining.” “I didn't want an assistant who'd ruin my life,” I continued, shaking my head. I stared at people moving in different directions in the busy street below, noting how they looked like safari ants whose lines has been tampered with. “Almost everyone at work acts like I'm invisible now. They're all over Kim and it's annoying. What annoys me most is the fact that she pretends to like me. I'm sure she doesn't, for some twisted reason but is faking it. I feel like sh
When I woke up the next morning, fear was the first thing I felt. As soon as I was conscious, I remembered that I had to meet the CEO at 10 am. I quickly jumped out of bed and made my way to the shower. I needed to be extra early so that I could mentally prepare myself for what was to come. I retouched my lipstick, took a deep breath and walked through the company entrance. A few heads turned my way with admiration but I look straight ahead, ignoring some of them. All they wanted was a feast for their eyes, not caring how it affected others. I opened the door to my office. Kim was putting some books in order. She looked amazing in a blue blouse and a black pencil skirt hugging her slight curves. Her black heels were amazing but were no match for mine, or so I thought. “Good morning, Maya.” She said, smiling. I knew she was faking it but I had no option but to play along. For now. I forced a smile. “Morning Kim. How are you today?” “Better than ever,” Kim said. “This company is per
“Come in.” That voice sent chills down my spine. I reached out for the door handle and twisted it. The desk where the CEO’s assistant sat was empty so I proceeded to the main which was on the other side of the white screen. I stood outside the white glass door and waited for more instructions, wondering if Zane could see my outline.“What are you waiting for?” He asked.I pushed the door and stepped inside. My body was shaking and I could feel sweat pooling all over my body.Zane looked up and observed me with his sharp green eyes. I looked down because I couldn’t maintain the stare. “I’m very sorry for what I did yesterday,” I said.“What did you do?” he asked.“I did not respond to your greeting,” I said. “My mind was elsewhere.”“How nice of your mind, to turn off when you’re meeting the new CEO of the company,” his tone was cold, like ice. “I’m truly sorry.”“You do not look like an insolent person, but then again people are not always as they seem. You’re teaching me that. Is
Kim“His name is Johnny,” I said, using my free hand to get my favorite black heels off the rack on to the floor. “Make sure you don't kill him. Just rough him up a little so he won't be able to work for about two weeks. That's all the time I need to turn my life around.”“Okay,” Mane said and I hang up. I placed my phone inside my hand bag, picked up the bag from the bed then stepped out. Before closing the door, I took one look at my tiny single roomed apartment. Soon, I wouldn’t be living in these horrible conditions anymore. When I finally had Maya's job, things would change. I'd finally be able to afford a decent apartment. I was tired of living like a peasant. Although the salary I started getting from Milner Insurance was making my life easier than it had been before, it was nowhere near enough to give me the life I wanted. On the other hand, Maya’s salary was huge and I needed that. If I started earning that much, my life would be super amazing and I would be able to get all
Zane.Kim Dalton a pain in the a** but she was necessary in the grand scheme of things. She was what I would call a necessary evil. Using Kim, I would get what I wanted. And to think I had not thought about it before my assistant got involved in an accident. She presented herself like the whore she was. I could see it in her eyes, and overall look. I had seen a lot of them, they type of women who were willing to do anything to get to the top including selling themselves to the highest bidder. I had been running companies for my pack for a very long time and could spot those from a mile away. I was not a fan of those kinds of women but I indulged with them when it could benefit me. Kim looked like someone who’d scratch my back even if I didn’t scratch hers. I just had to pretend that I was going to. She was vain, and therefore full of herself. Of course she could doubt that I would fall for her. She would therefore believe me if I lied that I liked her. Before Johnny returned, Kim wor
Maya“Why wouldn't I be arrogant?” Harry asked. He and I were in his office. I was standing in front of his desk, looking at the document I brought to him five minutes back. “I'm the most handsome and intelligent man in this company. Let's see, Maya. If you were asked to date any man here, who would it be?”“Anyone but you, Harry Smith. Being arrogant isn't attractive, you know. Try that on Kim.”“Are you sure? Would you be okay with me being with someone you hate?”“You can be with whoever you want,” I stated. “I don't care. Just sign the document because I have quite a lot to do now that Kim's working with you-know-who. I wonder why he needs two assistants anyway. His old one returned but he won’t let go of mine. Clearly, this man is here to ruin my life.”“Why are you in such a hurry?” He asked.I closed my eyes and inhaled. “Why do you always make an effort to delay me whenever I come here?”“Because I’m falling for you,” his eyes bore into mine. “What do you have to say to that?”
KimI didn't think I'd ever forget the look on Maya's face when I broke the news to her. Harry’s mocking comment was the icing on the cake. She looked so furious when she left I wouldn't have been surprised if I found her crying. The worst was yet to come for her. I had got Zane under my control and soon, I thought I’d be an executive in the company. After Maya left, Harry glared at me. “Get out of my office,” he said.My lips parted at his rudeness. Just a minute ago, he had been smiling. I had been here for two weeks but I hadn't been able to figure out if he was in love with her or not. Sometimes they didn't even greet each other but other times they conversed like they were the best of friends. Until that time, I thought he had nothing against me but I couldn’t be sure about that anymore. “You may be a senior executive but you can't treat me like this,” I said, assertively. “I'm an employee of this company just like you are. Just because you earn more doesn't mean you're better
Maya“Pass the ball!” I yelled. We were in a small soccer pitch in one of the city suburbs where our soccer club members practiced every Saturday. The club was not a professional one but a group of soccer enthusiasts. None of the members except the two of us had arrived yet even though it was time. Even the coach who was always here first had not yet come.“Not until you promise to tell me why you're so angry,” Anna said, hitting the ground with the ball and grabbing it when it bounced. “I hope it's not about Kim. I don't want her to turn you into a hateful person because you're not like that.”“That's it,” I said, running towards her while she broke into a run with the ball. I sprinted after her for a minute before giving up. She had always been faster than me though I was a few inches taller. I guess height didn’t matter when it came to speed.Playing soccer was my passion and a lot of people said it was weird because I was a girl. Some didn't believe that I actually liked it and th
