Chapter 1

Chapter 1

"You're not worth fighting for anymore."

The words hit me like a physical blow, knocking the breath from my lungs. I stared at Holden Ford, my mate—the Alpha of Silver Creek Pack—as he stood in our bedroom doorway with his bags already packed.

"What?" My voice came out as a whisper. "Holden, please. We can work through this—"

"No." His gray eyes, once so warm when they looked at me, were now cold as winter steel. "I'm done pretending, Camille. This marriage was a mistake from the beginning."

My hands trembled as I reached for him, but he stepped back like my touch would burn him. Seven years. Seven years of marriage, and he was walking away like it meant nothing.

"Is this about her?" I asked, though I already knew the answer. "Is this about Serena?"

His jaw tightened at the mention of his first love—the woman who'd returned to our pack three weeks ago with a five-year-old daughter she claimed was his.

"This is about us," he said flatly. "About how you trapped me into this marriage when I was grieving my father's death. About how you've never been my true mate, no matter how much you pretend."

Each word was a knife to my heart. My wolf whimpered inside me, crying out for our mate who was rejecting us so cruelly.

"I didn't trap you," I said, my voice stronger now. "We were both there that night. You needed comfort, and I—"

"You took advantage." His voice turned harsh. "You knew I was drunk, vulnerable. You knew I loved someone else, but you didn't care."

Tears burned my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. Not in front of him. Not anymore.

"Mom?" A small voice came from behind me.

My heart shattered as I turned to see our six-year-old daughter, Luna, standing in her pink pajamas, clutching her stuffed wolf. Her green eyes—exactly like Holden's—were wide with confusion.

"Why is Daddy leaving?" she asked.

I opened my mouth, but no words came. How could I explain this to her? How could I tell our daughter that her father was choosing another family over us?

Holden's expression didn't even soften as he looked at Luna. "I have to go away for a while."

"When will you come back?" Luna asked, taking a step toward him.

He moved past her without answering, without even looking at her properly. Luna's face crumpled, and something inside me snapped.

"Don't you dare walk away from her," I said, my voice low and dangerous.

Holden paused at the top of the stairs. "The divorce papers are on the kitchen table. Sign them."

"Holden—"

"Sign them, Camille. Or I'll make things very difficult for you in this pack." The threat in his voice was clear. As Alpha, he had the power to make my life hell.

He walked down the stairs, and I heard the front door slam moments later. Luna burst into tears, running into my arms.

"Why doesn't Daddy want us anymore?" she sobbed against my shoulder.

I held her tight, my own tears finally falling. "I don't know, baby. I don't know."

But that was a lie. I knew exactly why.

Serena Blackthorne had returned.

Later that night, after Luna had cried herself to sleep, I stood in the kitchen staring at the divorce papers. My signature line waited at the bottom, right next to his. He'd already signed them. He'd been that eager to be rid of us.

My phone buzzed with a text from my best friend, Maya: "Heard Holden's at Serena's apartment. Are you okay?"

I wasn't okay. I was drowning. But I couldn't fall apart. Not when Luna needed me.

I picked up the pen, my hand shaking. One signature and seven years would be erased like they never happened. One signature and I'd lose my position as Luna of the pack. One signature and Luna would grow up without her father.

The pen hovered over the paper.

That's when I felt it—a strange warmth spreading through my chest. My wolf, usually so quiet and subdued, suddenly stirred with an energy I'd never felt before.

Don't sign, a voice whispered in my mind. It wasn't my wolf. It was something else. Something more powerful.

The pen fell from my hand as I gasped. My body temperature spiked, and I could hear my heartbeat thundering in my ears. What was happening to me?

I stumbled toward the mirror in the hallway and froze. My brown eyes, ordinary and unremarkable my whole life, were glowing gold. Not the yellow of a normal wolf transformation—pure, burning gold like liquid fire.

The doorbell rang, startling me out of my trance. The glow faded instantly, leaving me dizzy and confused. Who would be here at midnight?

I opened the door cautiously and found myself face to face with a man I'd never seen before. Tall, dressed in an expensive black suit, with dark hair and eyes like molten amber. Power radiated from him in waves that made my knees weak.

"Camille Bell?" His voice was deep, commanding.

"Who's asking?"

He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "My name is Dimitri Stone. Alpha of the Shadow Moon Pack." He paused, studying my face with an intensity that made me shiver. "And I believe you're in danger."

"What?"

"That wasn't a normal wolf awakening you just experienced. Someone's been suppressing your true nature for years." His gaze hardened. "Tell me, has your mate ever let you mark him?"

My silence was enough. In seven years, Holden had never let me complete our mate bond. He'd always had an excuse.

"I thought so." Dimitri stepped closer, and I caught his scent—pine and winter storms. "You're not who you think you are, Camille. And if certain people find out what you really are, they'll kill you and your daughter."

Before I could respond, a howl pierced the night—Holden's howl, calling the pack to gather.

Dimitri's eyes flashed. "He's not calling them for a meeting. He's calling them for a rejection ceremony. He's going to publicly sever your mate's bond tonight."

My legs nearly gave out. A public rejection was the ultimate humiliation. It would destroy me in front of the entire pack.

"Why are you telling me this?" I whispered.

"Because," Dimitri said, his amber eyes boring into mine, "you're meant for something far greater than being Holden Ford's rejected mate."

Another howl echoed through the night, more urgent this time. I could hear wolves running toward the pack house.

"Come with me," Dimitri said, extending his hand. "Or face humiliation and possibly death. Your choice."

I looked back at the stairs where Luna slept peacefully, unaware her world was about to shatter completely.

"If I go with you, what happens to my daughter?"

"She comes too. I protect what's mine."

"I'm not yours."

His smile was dark, dangerous. "Not yet."

The howling grew louder. Time was running out.

I had two choices: Face Holden's public rejection and whatever came after, or trust this mysterious Alpha who claimed I was in mortal danger.

Looking at those amber eyes that seemed to see straight through me, I made my choice.

"Give me two minutes to get Luna."

As I ran up the stairs, one thought echoed through my mind: What if Holden's rejection wasn't the worst thing that could happen tonight?

What if it was just the beginning?
