THE ILLUSION

I woke up exhausted. My body still ached from yesterday’s fight, but there was no time to rest. Maya and I promised we’d teach the survivors some basic training today — they needed to learn how to protect themselves after everything they had lost.

When I reached downstairs, William was already there talking with Maya.

I noticed a small sparkle in his eyes whenever he looked at her.

Was that… a crush? I didn’t want to assume, but it was cute.

Before I could greet them, my breath got caught in my throat.

Damon walked in.

His hair was still a little messy like he had just rolled out of bed, and Goddess, he looked good even without trying. Every day he appeared more irresistible. And every day I had to remind myself he wasn’t mine… not really.

My wolf whined softly. But I pushed the feeling down.

He will never look at me the way he looks at Maya.

And I refuse to force the mate bond on anyone again.

I swallowed and forced a smile.
