I dropped to my knees beside Fiona, my heart pounding so loud it drowned out every other sound.

“No, no… Fiona, open your eyes,” I whispered, shaking.

“She’s breathing,” Lily murmured, voice trembling. “But she won’t wake up.”

I swallowed hard. Relief washed through me but fear clung to my chest, sharp and unrelenting.

“Their dark magic… it’s getting stronger,” I said under my breath. “Stronger than any of us expected.”

Damon raised an eyebrow. “This wasn’t just an attack. They wanted her. We need to figure out why.”

I stared at Fiona — so quiet, so still.

Why would they target her specifically?

Why go to such extreme lengths?

Nyx’s voice stirred inside me, pained and strained.

“We failed to protect her… again,” Nyx muttered, her voice barely more than a whisper, thick with guilt.

“Stop… please. It hurts enough.”

He went silent, but the ache lingered.

Our mate bond — cursed or blessed — had done nothing but wreck us.
