Chapter 1

The Second Fall

Alex’s POV

Something was wrong. Terribly wrong.

I stood at the head of the long mahogany table delivering the most important presentation of my career, yet my body refused to obey. A strange warmth had started at the base of my spine and now spread like liquid fire through my veins. My voice faltered mid-sentence. The directors stared at me with growing concern. I gripped the edge of the table hard enough to turn my knuckles white.

“Gentlemen,” I forced out, “the Graves proposal dies today. We take their eastern ports on our terms or we dismantle their routes until they beg us to stop.”

Sweat broke across my forehead. My shirt clung uncomfortably to my skin. The room felt too hot, too bright, every sound amplified. Nathan watched me from his seat with that calm expression he always wore. My illegitimate older brother had waited years for any sign of weakness. I refused to give it to him.

I continued outlining the strategy, but the words grew heavier. My legs trembled and a deep burning pressure built low in my gut. The scent that suddenly filled the air was sweet and foreign. It came from me. Horror clawed at my throat as realization struck.

No. Not here. Not now.

“Alex?” One of the directors asked. “Are you alright?”

I opened my mouth to reassure them, but a violent cramp seized my body making my knees buckle. I collapsed onto the polished floor in front of the entire board. Papers scattered around me. Voices rose in panic. The last thing I heard before darkness took me was Nathan calling for medical help, his tone perfectly measured.

I woke in a sterile white room three days later. Machines beeped steadily beside the bed. Thick restraints held my wrists to the rails. My body felt wrong in every possible way. Heavy. Soft. Foreign.

A doctor stood at the foot of the bed reviewing a tablet. He looked up when I stirred.

“Mr. Sterling. Welcome back. We have been monitoring you closely.”

“Where am I?” My voice came out rough and weaker than I remembered. “What happened?”

The doctor hesitated. That single pause sent ice through my veins.

“You experienced a second differentiation during the board meeting. It is extremely rare. Your Alpha physiology underwent a complete shift. You are now an Omega.”

The words refused to make sense. I pulled against the restraints, muscles straining.

“Impossible,” I snapped. “Run the tests again. I am an Alpha. I have always been an Alpha.”

“We have run every test available,” the doctor replied calmly. “Blood markers, hormone levels, scent analysis. All confirm the transition. Most individuals do not survive this process. You are fortunate.”

Fortunate. The word tasted like ash. I had built my entire identity around strength and control. Now that foundation lay shattered. My body had betrayed me in the most public and humiliating way possible.

“Remove these restraints,” I demanded.

The doctor nodded to the nurse. Once freed, I sat up slowly. Every movement felt different. My center of gravity had shifted. My limbs carried an unfamiliar softness. Worst of all was the new scent that clung to my skin, sweet and vulnerable. It marked me as prey in a world ruled by predators.

They brought fresh clothes. I dressed alone, refusing assistance. When I stood, my legs held me, but the power I once took for granted had vanished. Uncle Leonard waited in the hallway. His usual dramatic energy seemed subdued today, though he still attempted a wide smile.

“Alex, my boy,” he said, pulling me into a quick hug. “This is madness. We will fix it. You will see.”

“How bad is it, Leo?” I asked, stepping back to study his face.

He sighed heavily. “The board moved quickly. They named Nathan acting CEO this morning. They claim it is temporary, for the stability of the company. I fought them, but the others worried about perception. An Omega at the helm… they fear it would invite attacks from rivals like Graves.”

Nathan. Of course he had seized the moment. Years of quiet resentment had finally found its opening. I clenched my fists, but the gesture lacked its former strength.

“I need to speak to them,” I said.

“Not yet,” Leonard replied. “Your body is still stabilizing. The doctors warn that your first heat may come soon and it will be intense. Rest first. We will challenge the decision legally. The will clearly names you heir.”

We both understood the reality. In our world, biology often spoke louder than any legal document. An Alpha heir commanded respect. An Omega heir invited pity or exploitation.

Nathan arrived later that afternoon. He wore a suit cut in my preferred style, tailored perfectly to his taller frame. His expression showed concern, but his eyes held a different truth.

“Alex,” he said warmly, “I am truly sorry this happened to you. The board acted in the company’s best interest. I am only holding things together until you recover.”

I studied him carefully. “You wasted no time stepping into my role, brother.”

“Someone had to,” he replied smoothly. “The Graves negotiations could not wait. I secured the eastern ports on better terms than planned. The board was impressed with the speed.”

Rage burned through the lingering weakness in my body. I stepped closer, though my movements felt less intimidating than before.

“Enjoy it while it lasts,” I told him quietly. “I built this empire. I will take it back.”

Nathan offered that familiar calm smile. “Of course. Focus on your health, little brother. The family wants what is best for everyone.”

He left, and the silence that followed pressed down on me. Leonard tried to fill the space with his usual over-the-top stories, but I barely heard them. My mind kept returning to the boardroom. The way I had collapsed like a weakling in front of men who once feared my decisions. The way my scent had betrayed me.

They moved me to a private recovery suite that evening. I stood at the large window overlooking the glittering city. My reflection showed the same sharp features and dark hair, but my eyes carried shadows I had never seen before. The Omega scent still lingered on my skin, a constant reminder of what I had lost.

I pressed my forehead against the cool glass. Everything I had worked for, every victory, every carefully built alliance, now hung by a thread. My body had turned against me at the worst possible moment. My family had moved to replace me. Rivals would soon circle like wolves.

Yet beneath the shame and anger, a cold determination took root. I was still Alex Sterling. I had led through crises before. This would be no different. I would study this new biology. I would find ways to compensate for the weakness. I would reclaim my position and make every person who doubted me regret their haste.

But as night fell over the city, a quieter voice whispered doubts. In our world Alphas ruled without question. Omegas navigated a different, more dangerous existence. I had just been forced into that world against my will.

I stared out at the lights and repeated the thought like a vow.

I was never supposed to be prey.
