Layla’s POV
… “What…?” I almost couldn’t believe my eyes at that moment, as I saw Hannah emptying the contents of the small bottle she had in her hand. I wasn’t sure what it was, but then, I could tell that it was something harmful. She suddenly looked around but was unable to spot me from where I had been watching her from behind a door. I watched in fear and surprise as she made for Nate’s room. It was clear what she had wanted to do from then on, but I still couldn’t tell why she wanted to feed it to him. The jealous part of me wanted to sit and watch everything unfold, as Nate had simply abandoned me to myself without giving a definite reason for his change of behavior. He deserved it after all. ‘But we can’t just let her do anything to him…’ Ava, my wolf kept spurring me to act, even though the jealous part of me had taken quite a strong hold of me. ‘He could be in danger.’ ‘He could be in danger for all I care,’ I snapped back at her even though I was mainly speaking from the hurt that had taken me hostage. ‘He doesn’t care about us and it’s only fair that we return the favor.’ With that, I ended that debate between Ava and I. But I was soon at war with myself, specifically with the part of me that had fallen hopelessly in love with Nate. I kept trying to suppress him and trying to keep that part of me from speaking up ever again. Soon enough, I realized that I couldn’t pretend not to care no matter how hard I tried to do that. It hurt even more that I was having that struggle for someone who humiliated me in front of the woman that he claimed to love. As though on impulse, I found myself hurrying to Nate’s room. The urgency that had suddenly surged into me was far from explainable, as I ran to his room. I was hoping that he hadn’t had any of it before I would come. I put my hand on the doorknob and the door suddenly came open right when Nate was about to take the first spoon of the food. “Stop!” I yelled, causing both of them to stop in shock. A part of me was relieved that they both weren’t naked like I had been suspecting them to be. I would have contemplated shoving the poison down Nate’s throat myself if they had been in the act when I walked in. “What the heck are you doing here?” Hannah snarled her question at me. “The more important question is, what did you put in Nate’s food?” I asked, not knowing where the boldness had suddenly come from. But for the time being, I enjoyed the shocked look that came on Hannah’s face and the suspicious look that came on Nate’s face. “I see you’re beginning to get delusional from the fact that Nate chose me over you,” Hannah mustered a strange confidence as she tried to put up a convincing denial. “Nate, don’t believe anything she has to say, she’s just…” Without warning, I reached for the part of her dress where I had seen her hide the small potion after putting some of it in Nate’s food. I dragged it out without any second thought, for Nate to see it. “What’s that?” Nate asked with his brows furrowed, as he took a look at the bottle and another at Hannah who was already getting nervous. “I don’t know what it is. But the best way we can find out is by having her taste it.” I said, taking advantage of Hannah’s silence. “Let her taste the food and we can know what exactly she had planned to do with it.” “Are you seriously listening to what she’s saying to you? What more would you expect from someone who isn’t wanted by her mate?” Hannah still denied it, even though all the clues were pointing against her. Nate was stuck between two tough decisions, and I could sense that from where I was standing. I was just hoping that somehow his sense of reasoning hadn’t been blinded by Hannah’s deceit. “Taste it…” Nate said to her, suddenly breaking the silence, and filling my heart with the warmth of relief. “Go ahead and prove to me that she’s lying, Hannah.” “What?” Hannah was surprised by Nate’s compliance with my words. I was sure that she was feeling the same feeling of betrayal I had felt earlier. “Nate… you’re kidding, right?” “Well, yeah. I’m kidding, and that’s why I want us to prove her wrong. Go ahead…” Nate’s words depicted his dilemma perfectly. “I’m waiting…” The tension at the moment was very palpable. Uncomfortable even. But I was silently enjoying every moment of it. “Fine...” Hannah finally agreed as she took up the spoon. That had me wondering what exactly she was trying to prove. I was slowly beginning to get scared that I had just made a fool of myself. She was hesitantly bringing up the spoon to her mouth, and that was more than enough to give her away. Suddenly, she slipped it into her mouth and emptied its contents without a second thought. The deafening silence that followed had Nate looking at me like one that had come intentionally to cause trouble, as she was looking normal up until that point. “You see...” Things seemed normal until Hannah opened her mouth to speak. “I'm alright...” she began to sound intoxicated, as she was trying to stay on her feet. Nate looked in shock, as he saw clearly that I hadn't been bluffing one bit. “You see...” she was now laughing uncontrollably at that point. “The plan was simple… get Nate to eat the hallucinogens and make love passionate love to me while I get him to do away with you… but now you've ruined it all…” At that point, Nate had heard enough.Nate's POVI knew exactly what had happened to Freddie. He had been wide enough to give me a signal before he blacked out. “They found them. We need to move, now.” We headed out to war. We already got all the responses we needed and the few Alpha’s who wanted to support us have sent the men they wish to support us with and as we rushed towards our destination, the only thing on my mind was saving Freddie. As we approached the clearing where Augustus now stood with his men. I could see him standing in front looking at me intent The battle scene unfolded like a chaotic dance, with snarling wolves clashing in a frenzy of teeth and claws. I charged forward, my heart racing with adrenaline, as Augustus’s men emerged from the trees like a dark, menacing tide. The air was thick with the smell of blood and sweat, and the sound of growling and snapping filled my ears. “Freddie, get behind me!” I yelled, my voice barely audible over the din of the battle. Freddie nodded, his eyes blazing w
Freddie’s POVWe were trapped, the spiked ceiling descending slowly but surely, ready to crush us all. We frantically searched for an exit, our claws scraping against the stone walls as we desperately sought a way out. The air was thick with tension, our hearts racing with fear. I wish I could tell them to be brave in the face of all these but even I was on the verge of freaking out. “This can’t be happening!” one of my pack members growled, his eyes fixed on the ceiling. “We have to get out of here! We can’t just sit here and wait for death!” “I know, I know,” I replied, my mind racing. “But how? The walls are solid, and the doors are sealed shut. We’ve tried every path, every door. There’s no way out.” “We can’t give up,” another pack member said, his voice firm. “We have to keep trying. We have to find a way.” But as we searched, the ceiling crept closer, its spikes glinting in the dim light. We knew we were running out of time. The silence was oppressive, punctuated only by t
Layla's POVEverything that happened from there was a blur. I hadn’t even seen Augustus and his men escape or Nate arrives with help.“We have to get him to the pack, Layla!” Nate said as he pulled me away from the lifeless body and the men carried him. The men suddenly stopped and laid him down.“Layla.” I heard Scott say and I rushed to his side. He took off the chain on his neck and gave it to me. “Take care of Brian and yourself too. Nate is a good man and the best for you. Never forget that I wish we had become close soon but I will keep watching over you when I am gone.” I crowd as I felt him breathe his last. The forest floor crunched under the weight of paws, a mournful symphony accompanying the symphony of grief rising from the Moon Caste pack. The full moon, a usually comforting beacon, hung heavy tonight, casting an eerie glow over the clearing where they gathered. Smoke curled from a central pyre, sending wisps of charred pine into the night sky. There, upon a bed of fragr
Layla's POVHow are you here?”“There is no time to talk. We are not safe yet and Augustus will soon arrive here with his men. He had meant to kill you before I interfered but now, we have to return to the pack as soon as possible. We will not be able to reach out to the pack because he has somehow blocked our link with them so until we are close to the pack, we cannot call for help.”“Unfortunately, we cannot even head to the pack now because Augustus and his men are between us and the pack,” Scott said.“Then we have to go to safety.”“Where do we go?”“I have no idea,” Jacob said.“But how exactly did it happen that you are here right now?”“Just like the last time, I was trying to connect with the mana around here. I have resolved to mourn my lost pack members that way by setting aside time to remember them even if I cannot go to where they are buried.”My heart broke for him immediately. To think I had suspected there was foil play somewhere. I have become easily suspicious of pe
Layla's POVA hush fell over the clearing. The remaining rogues stared in stunned silence, their defiance replaced by sheer terror. Then, with a whimper, one by one, they turned tail and fled into the undergrowth. The silver wolf stood panting, blood staining its fur, its victory seemingly complete. But as it let out a triumphant howl, the full extent of its injuries became apparent. It swayed unsteadily, its breaths shallow and ragged.A wave of concern washed over me. “We have to help it,” I blurted out, ignoring the throbbing pain in my wrists.Scott, however, seemed hesitant.“It saved us,” he said slowly,“but do we know it won’t turn on us next?”“It won’t,” I said with a conviction I surprised even myself. “There’s something… familiar about it.”As if in response, the silver wolf turned its head towards us, its gaze lingering on me for a moment longer than necessary. Then, with a final whimper, it collapsed onto the forest floor, unconscious.A cold dread settled in my stomach.
Layla's POVI woke up to great discomfort. I could not move my body. I looked down my stomach immediately where there seemed to be a restraint and I realized I was tied to a tree.Panic clawed at my throat like a starving beast as I looked around. Disoriented, I blinked furiously against the harsh cold, the world a blurry mess of green and brown. My head throbbed a dull ache that pulsed with every frantic beat of my heart. My breath hitched as I tried to move, only to be met with a sickening realization. My wrists burned – a rope, thick and rough, digging into my skin and binding me to the rough bark of a giant oak. The fibers bit deep, sending a fresh wave of panic crashing over me.I heard someone groan beside me and I looked at my side to see Scott was tied in a sitting position at the foot of the nearest tree to me.“What is going on? Did Marcus and your dad do this?”“He is not my dad. There is no way that monster would be my dad.”“Well, where are they now?”“Somewhere around.”
