We got home from picking up our graduation items from the school, and the moment we got inside, Scott made his way into the lounge room and began playing Xbox. I could hear him laughing and chatting with his friends as they played online.
I went upstairs and phoned my cousin Haven, and we talked about my upcoming graduation and our planned graduation dinner, before we spoke about the dreaded sacrifice gathering. After we had finished talking on the phone, I read the novel I was currently reading, which was Heartless by Diana Palmer. As I read the novel, I was so caught up in it that I had lost track of time. Looking at the clock on my bedside table, I realized I needed to start preparing dinner.
I made my way downstairs and through to the kitchen and began to cook dinner. I did this every night when my parents had night shift at the hospital. Cooking was my responsibility because Scott couldn't cook, and my parents were worried that if he tried, he would burn the house down. Tonight I was making a dish of red wine and garlic barbecued chicken, with a base of steamed rice, and with a side of steamed vegetables. It didn't take me long to prepare the food. Once the food was cooked, I made up two containers for my parents before making myself a plate. Once I had finished eating, I quickly made up a plate for Scott and took it out to him in the lounge room, then I grabbed the containers to take up to the hospital to my parents. When I was in the jeep, I opened the center console and grabbed out the security badge that was needed in order for a human to cross over onto werewolf territories. Without the badge, I wouldn't be able to get over the territory line and get to the hospital where my parents worked. I pulled up to the gate and a werewolf stepped forward. I knew his name was Carter. I don't think he was as bad as some of the other werewolves out there, but to me, he was a monster nonetheless.
"Lara, badge," he growled as soon as I pulled up at the gate.
This happened pretty much every night, me bringing my parents dinner, and Carter grumbling at me for my badge. He saw me pretty much every night, at around the same time, and it was always the same thing. I always felt like I was trapped in like a groundhog day kind of thing, or deja vu even, as I went through this song and dance with him every night. I lifted my badge, showing him the pass like I always did. He huffed in irritation, like he always did, before pushing a button and allowing me to pass. I drove to the parking lot right outside the main entrance of the hospital. Getting out of the car, I quickly made my way inside, and waved to the nurse who was sitting at the front desk. I received a smile from her in return. Making my way over to the staircase, I made my way upstairs and onto the third floor where my parents worked. As soon as I walked up to the main nurses desk on the third floor, the head matron paged my parents, letting them know to come to the nurses station.
I waited in silence for about fifteen minutes before my parents arrived at the nurses station. When they saw me waiting for them, they smiled in greeting. My father gave me a big hug and my mother placed a light kiss on my cheek.
"So... what did our little chef make for us tonight?" my mother asked me in a teasing tone. They each took the plastic containers from me, and lifting the lid of his container, my father smelled the aroma of the chicken, before grinning at me like the Cheshire Cat.
"Oh yummy, what would we ever do without you?" my mother asked.
"Probably starve," I retorted, giving them both a smile.
"Thank you honey, this looks delicious," my father told me.
"So... did you and Scott get everything sorted for your graduation?" my mother asked.
"Yes, all done," I assured her.
"So Lara, how does it feel to be graduating high school?" A nurse by the name of Fiona asked me.
"Good," I replied.
"Wow, a real eager beaver you have here," she said to my parents.
"Now now Fiona, let her be. There is a lot going on. She has a lot to deal with," my father replied.
He was right. There was a lot going on and I was stressed out big time. The last thing I wanted to do was talk about a future that I might not have. Once my parents had finished eating their dinner, I gave them both a hug before I took their dirty containers and cutlery and left. It didn't take me long to get home from the hospital. When I got back home and walked into the house, I found Scott still playing on his Xbox. Without a word, I made my way through to the kitchen and started cleaning the kitchen. Once I was done, I said goodnight to Scott and made my way upstairs and went to bed.
My alarm went off all to soon. Getting out of be, I made my way downstairs and made breakfast for the family before making a start on the household chores. Once I had done the chores, I went back upstairs to get ready for today's graduation ceremony. I gathered my hair up, putting it into a fancy up do. Once I had finished my hair and make up, I pulled on my black slacks and white blouse, along with my shoes before quickly putting my black and gold graduation cap and gown on. Once I was dressed, I made my way out of my bedroom and headed downstairs to join my family. It wasn't long before the four of us were making our way out of the house and over to my fathers black Escalade so that we could head to the school. We got into the car and headed off to attend mine and Scott's graduation. When we arrived at the school, my father parked his car in the school parking lot which was packed. There were a large group of students gathered around in their caps and gowns talking ex
When we arrived at the restaurant, we slowly made our way inside and saw that it was packed full with graduates and their friends and families who were also celebrating. I was glad that we had made reservations. The hostess quickly showed us to our table and we each took our seats. We enjoyed our lunch meal. Scott and I were having a discussion about our future plans with our family, but my heart wasn't in it, due to the uncertainty which surrounded me. The waitress had just come over to see if we wanted to order dessert, when suddenly the restaurant doors opened and they walked in.A group of inhumanely tall men walked into the restaurant. The waitress immediately dropped her eyes to the ground, not wanting to catch their gaze. The buzz of excitement which had consumed the restaurant only moments ago came to a halt, and suddenly it was so quiet in the restaurant, you could have heard a pin drop. It was obvious to me that everyone in the restaurant was scared of the gro
The discussion we had had last night with my aunt and uncle and my cousin Haven had left me feeling restless and worried. If one of us were chosen for the sacrifice, would my family be able to get away from here? I was feeling uneasy to the point it was making me feel nauseous. I hated the fact that we were offered up to the werewolves as sacrifices. But seeing them last night up close like that, in a group like setting, had me feeling terrified. I had heard and read a lot about werewolves to gain an understanding of them, but until last night, the only one I had ever seen up close had been Carter. The werewolves at the restaurant last night had been bigger then Carter, a lot bigger.I got out of bed and made my way into the bathroom. I quickly pulled my hair up into a pony tail before taking my shower. After my shower I quickly brushed my teeth. I slipped on my bathrobe before making my way out of my bathroom, and back into my bedroom. Once I was in my bedroom, I began
I was led outside to a black SUV, which was parked in a secluded spot away from prying eyes and ears. I was relieved to see my family waiting beside the SUV. I would have five minutes to say my goodbyes to them. Five minutes wasn't much time, but given the circumstances, it was better then nothing. When I joined my family, they all threw their arms around me in a group hug, and as crazy as it may seem, I felt their love for me in that moment. As they pulled back from me, Haven quietly hissed, "What the hell were you thinking? Do you know what they will do to you if they find out the truth?"I quickly shushed her not wanting to risk anyone overhearing us, especially the werewolves. I knew what I had done had been risky. But to me, it was a chance worth taking. My brother took me into his warm embrace and whispered, "You're strong. You're a survivor. I know you will be fine. It's only twelve months, remember that. You will be back home before you know it."When he releas
As we drove away, leaving my family behind, I watched anxiously as civilization disappeared out of my line of sight. I knew I had done a bad thing, a dangerous thing, something that could potentially get me killed. But I had done it for all the right reasons! If these wolves were to ever find out that I wasn't Haven, they would kill me for sure, along with my family. We would all be slaughtered like the sheep these beasts thought we were. But I couldn't let Haven die. I couldn't let her be one of their victims.I don't know how much time passed before the smooth county road turned into a bumpy dirt track. The woods became thicker and I felt my anxiety increase. I had never been this far away from town before. This was an area that was heavily patrolled by beasts. The patrolling beasts stopped anyone who tried to enter these lands. The entire time we were driving, the werewolves in the car with me remained silent as the car continued making its way through the mountains.
Heidi walked quickly, leading me through the expensively furnished mansion. Soon we were walking down a hallway that had a tiled floor. The pale cream walls were lined with large paintings, which looked to me like they should be in a museum or art gallery somewhere. At the end of the hallway there was an inconspicuous door, and I was surprised when Heidi opened the door and started leading me downstairs. I followed her down the narrow staircase in silence, and tried to let my eyes adjust to the growing darkness, as we got further into what I now realized was the basement.Once we were standing at the bottom of the staircase, I tried to take in my surroundings. The floor was just your standard concrete slab floor. The basement was also dusty, and had the unmistakable musty smell of mold in the air. The air felt thick in here. I watched as Heidi made her way over to an old wooden door and opened it, revealing an old bathroom. There was nothing nice about this bathroom. It
I lay there in the silence of the tiny room, breathing in the heavy musty air. It felt stifling in here. I couldn't fall asleep despite feeling tired out from the craziness of the day.I looked around the room and saw a vent in the wall beneath the wooden table in my room. Getting up off my bed, I made my way over to the vent to check it out. I quietly undid the screws and lifted the cover off, and took a look at the inside of the vent. There was nothing else in there, and it had an adequate amount of space, so I made a decision. This would be the ideal spot to hide my bag whenever I was out of the room. I grabbed my bag and put it in the vent before placing the cover back on and doing up the screws.Getting up off the floor, I quickly made my bed, and when I was done, lay back down on it. I don't know how long I had been laying there on my bed when there was a ruckus at my door. It was apparent that someone was trying to get into my room. I waited on my be
Alpha Cole lifted one of the large chunks of meat off the tray and began to chow down on it in a manner befitting that of a wild animal. As I watched him devour the meat, I mentally chanted, "Don't vomit, don't vomit, don't vomit." I was feeling nauseated at the sight of the beasts seated before me, who were eating their meal like a pack of wild dogs tearing into a carcass."Haven," a warm voice said.I wasn't paying attention though, because I was too busy trying not to throw up to notice someone was addressing me."Haven," a deep voice called.Suddenly it hit me. Shit! I'm Haven! Taking a step forward, I was aware of the sound of what sounded like a glass hitting the table hard. I wasn't about to look up though to find out for sure, because I honestly didn't want to die."Fill my glass," Alpha Cole growled."Wait, fill his glass. With what? Heidi had never told me what Alpha Cole drank with his dinner," I thought, beginning to
