My alarm went off all to soon. Getting out of be, I made my way downstairs and made breakfast for the family before making a start on the household chores. Once I had done the chores, I went back upstairs to get ready for today's graduation ceremony. I gathered my hair up, putting it into a fancy up do. Once I had finished my hair and make up, I pulled on my black slacks and white blouse, along with my shoes before quickly putting my black and gold graduation cap and gown on. Once I was dressed, I made my way out of my bedroom and headed downstairs to join my family. It wasn't long before the four of us were making our way out of the house and over to my fathers black Escalade so that we could head to the school. We got into the car and headed off to attend mine and Scott's graduation.
When we arrived at the school, my father parked his car in the school parking lot which was packed. There were a large group of students gathered around in their caps and gowns talking excitedly. I smiled at Scott right before we got out of the car with our parents. Our parents each had big smiles upon their faces. It was obvious they were proud of us.
We all made our way into the auditorium which was so packed we could barely move. Our class representatives were lining the students up as soon as they entered the building. It didn't feel like much time had passed before the schools band began to play our schools graduation melody. Teachers were doing their best to keep the students who were about to graduate quiet, while others were getting the soon to be graduates lined up in alphabetical order. We all stood in line waiting to be called on stage to be seated for the ceremony, after which we would receive our diplomas.
Suddenly it was time for the graduating students to make our way on to the stage to take our seats, and listen to the principle give his speech, before we would receive our diplomas and recognition. I stood where I was waiting until it was my turn to make my way on to the stage. Finally it was my turn to walk onto the stage and take my seat. As I made my way towards the stage, I was hoping that I didn't end up tripping over and falling flat on my face in front of all of these people. I guess I could thank god that I didn't fall flat on my face. When I had gotten onto the stage, like the other students who had entered before me, I still had to remain standing until all the other students who were graduating had finished walking in to take their seats.
Our school Principle, Mr Anderson, was standing at the microphone after having just brought all the students up onto stage.
"Students you may all be seated," his voice rang out throughout the auditorium. "Today is a great day. A day which you all achieved by perseverance and determination. A day you students can take pride in, and a day of pure joy for your loved ones who have supported you all these years. Because today is the day your future awaits you. When you leave here today, you will no longer be students of this school. You will be young adults who are destined for great things. Today is a day that you will always cherish. A day that you will remember for years to come, the day you graduated from high school."
His voice was an odd pitch for a mans voice. To me his voice had honestly always sounded kind of girly. He stood there in his expensive suit. It was a black suit, and he had a dark blue tie, and a white button up shirt paired with it. His black hair had silver highlights through it. As I stood there listening to him, I realized that today would be the last time I would ever see Principle Anderson.
After all the class speeches had been given, and we had all shared our laughs and tears through the reminiscing of those giving their speeches, Principle Anderson began to call each student up to receive their diplomas. When it was finally my turn, I stood there with butterflies in my tummy while I waited for him to call my name.
"Lara Westhaven," his voice rang out though the loudspeakers, enunciating every word. A cheer could be heard from the audience, people were shouting, and clapping enthusiastically. The pit of my stomach felt like I was on a roller coaster. This was my moment to shine. I carefully made my way over to Principle Anderson, shaking his hand while he handed me my diploma which he held in his other hand. His grip was light, as it was widely known that he was a gentle soul. When he released my hand, he took my tassel on my graduation cap and shifted it over to the left side of my cap. I grinned at him, thanking him without words. I slowly and carefully walked off stage not wanting to fall down now that I was so close to being done with the ceremony, and waited with everybody else for the rest of the graduates to receive their diplomas. As the final student walked across the stage the auditorium began to come alive once more. People who had once been waiting patiently started to murmur with excitement. Principle Anderson once again took the attention of the room as his voice filled the air.
"Congratulations graduating class!" his voice announced enthusiastically.
The students all took their hats off, throwing them in the air. I followed suit, flinging it high in the air, and looking at my classmates faces lighting up with pure joy. We had done it! All the hard work had finally paid off! All the late night study sessions and stressing over exams, it was all over! This was our reward, we had finally made it! I couldn't believe we were finished high school!
People began making their way out of the auditorium and laughing and joking around as the ceremony was now complete. The students all began gathering up their thrown caps, before making their way outside to their families. I was handed my cap and I placed it on my head once more. This cap and gown meant so much to me, today I was a queen, and my cap was my crown!
Scott and I made our way outside to find our parents, and when I saw them with my aunt and uncle and my cousin Haven, I was so excited! Haven and I, while being cousins, were also best friends! Seeing me, Haven ran over and threw her arms around me, giving me a big hug, while she screamed excitedly. When she let me go, my aunt and uncle each gave me a hug and congratulated me on my graduation. We all made our way over to my fathers Escalade, while my aunt and uncle and Haven got into their SUV. A moment later we were we driving to the restaurant where we had booked a table to have lunch so we could celebrate mine and Scott's accomplishment.
When we arrived at the restaurant, we slowly made our way inside and saw that it was packed full with graduates and their friends and families who were also celebrating. I was glad that we had made reservations. The hostess quickly showed us to our table and we each took our seats. We enjoyed our lunch meal. Scott and I were having a discussion about our future plans with our family, but my heart wasn't in it, due to the uncertainty which surrounded me. The waitress had just come over to see if we wanted to order dessert, when suddenly the restaurant doors opened and they walked in.A group of inhumanely tall men walked into the restaurant. The waitress immediately dropped her eyes to the ground, not wanting to catch their gaze. The buzz of excitement which had consumed the restaurant only moments ago came to a halt, and suddenly it was so quiet in the restaurant, you could have heard a pin drop. It was obvious to me that everyone in the restaurant was scared of the gro
The discussion we had had last night with my aunt and uncle and my cousin Haven had left me feeling restless and worried. If one of us were chosen for the sacrifice, would my family be able to get away from here? I was feeling uneasy to the point it was making me feel nauseous. I hated the fact that we were offered up to the werewolves as sacrifices. But seeing them last night up close like that, in a group like setting, had me feeling terrified. I had heard and read a lot about werewolves to gain an understanding of them, but until last night, the only one I had ever seen up close had been Carter. The werewolves at the restaurant last night had been bigger then Carter, a lot bigger.I got out of bed and made my way into the bathroom. I quickly pulled my hair up into a pony tail before taking my shower. After my shower I quickly brushed my teeth. I slipped on my bathrobe before making my way out of my bathroom, and back into my bedroom. Once I was in my bedroom, I began
I was led outside to a black SUV, which was parked in a secluded spot away from prying eyes and ears. I was relieved to see my family waiting beside the SUV. I would have five minutes to say my goodbyes to them. Five minutes wasn't much time, but given the circumstances, it was better then nothing. When I joined my family, they all threw their arms around me in a group hug, and as crazy as it may seem, I felt their love for me in that moment. As they pulled back from me, Haven quietly hissed, "What the hell were you thinking? Do you know what they will do to you if they find out the truth?"I quickly shushed her not wanting to risk anyone overhearing us, especially the werewolves. I knew what I had done had been risky. But to me, it was a chance worth taking. My brother took me into his warm embrace and whispered, "You're strong. You're a survivor. I know you will be fine. It's only twelve months, remember that. You will be back home before you know it."When he releas
As we drove away, leaving my family behind, I watched anxiously as civilization disappeared out of my line of sight. I knew I had done a bad thing, a dangerous thing, something that could potentially get me killed. But I had done it for all the right reasons! If these wolves were to ever find out that I wasn't Haven, they would kill me for sure, along with my family. We would all be slaughtered like the sheep these beasts thought we were. But I couldn't let Haven die. I couldn't let her be one of their victims.I don't know how much time passed before the smooth county road turned into a bumpy dirt track. The woods became thicker and I felt my anxiety increase. I had never been this far away from town before. This was an area that was heavily patrolled by beasts. The patrolling beasts stopped anyone who tried to enter these lands. The entire time we were driving, the werewolves in the car with me remained silent as the car continued making its way through the mountains.
Heidi walked quickly, leading me through the expensively furnished mansion. Soon we were walking down a hallway that had a tiled floor. The pale cream walls were lined with large paintings, which looked to me like they should be in a museum or art gallery somewhere. At the end of the hallway there was an inconspicuous door, and I was surprised when Heidi opened the door and started leading me downstairs. I followed her down the narrow staircase in silence, and tried to let my eyes adjust to the growing darkness, as we got further into what I now realized was the basement.Once we were standing at the bottom of the staircase, I tried to take in my surroundings. The floor was just your standard concrete slab floor. The basement was also dusty, and had the unmistakable musty smell of mold in the air. The air felt thick in here. I watched as Heidi made her way over to an old wooden door and opened it, revealing an old bathroom. There was nothing nice about this bathroom. It
I lay there in the silence of the tiny room, breathing in the heavy musty air. It felt stifling in here. I couldn't fall asleep despite feeling tired out from the craziness of the day.I looked around the room and saw a vent in the wall beneath the wooden table in my room. Getting up off my bed, I made my way over to the vent to check it out. I quietly undid the screws and lifted the cover off, and took a look at the inside of the vent. There was nothing else in there, and it had an adequate amount of space, so I made a decision. This would be the ideal spot to hide my bag whenever I was out of the room. I grabbed my bag and put it in the vent before placing the cover back on and doing up the screws.Getting up off the floor, I quickly made my bed, and when I was done, lay back down on it. I don't know how long I had been laying there on my bed when there was a ruckus at my door. It was apparent that someone was trying to get into my room. I waited on my be
Alpha Cole lifted one of the large chunks of meat off the tray and began to chow down on it in a manner befitting that of a wild animal. As I watched him devour the meat, I mentally chanted, "Don't vomit, don't vomit, don't vomit." I was feeling nauseated at the sight of the beasts seated before me, who were eating their meal like a pack of wild dogs tearing into a carcass."Haven," a warm voice said.I wasn't paying attention though, because I was too busy trying not to throw up to notice someone was addressing me."Haven," a deep voice called.Suddenly it hit me. Shit! I'm Haven! Taking a step forward, I was aware of the sound of what sounded like a glass hitting the table hard. I wasn't about to look up though to find out for sure, because I honestly didn't want to die."Fill my glass," Alpha Cole growled."Wait, fill his glass. With what? Heidi had never told me what Alpha Cole drank with his dinner," I thought, beginning to
When the wolves had finally finished eating, they all got up from the table and left the dining hall, leaving us girls to clean up their mess. As he was leaving the dining room, Alpha Cole gave me one last long lingering look. As the beasts left the room, the tension in the room slowly dissipated. I stood and watched as the girls all began to visibly relax. Heidi went and grabbed a couple of cleaning rags and dipped them into a big plastic tub of water.Walking over to me, she handed me a cloth and said, "We have to clean the table and each chair."As I began to wash the chair that Alpha Cole had been sitting in, I noticed that we weren't using any cleaning products, just hot water. I didn't say anything about it though, not wanting to be laughed at again. As if picking up on my thoughts, Heidi said, "We don't use cleaning products here. The werewolves don't like scented soaps. So to clean we just use hot water and good old fashioned elbow grease. We clean the di
