When we arrived at the restaurant, we slowly made our way inside and saw that it was packed full with graduates and their friends and families who were also celebrating. I was glad that we had made reservations. The hostess quickly showed us to our table and we each took our seats. We enjoyed our lunch meal. Scott and I were having a discussion about our future plans with our family, but my heart wasn't in it, due to the uncertainty which surrounded me. The waitress had just come over to see if we wanted to order dessert, when suddenly the restaurant doors opened and they walked in.
A group of inhumanely tall men walked into the restaurant. The waitress immediately dropped her eyes to the ground, not wanting to catch their gaze. The buzz of excitement which had consumed the restaurant only moments ago came to a halt, and suddenly it was so quiet in the restaurant, you could have heard a pin drop. It was obvious to me that everyone in the restaurant was scared of the group of people who had just made their way into the restaurant.
I openly stared at the tall beasts walking past our table. When green eyes locked with mine, I suddenly felt frozen, my eyes suddenly widening like a deer caught in the headlights.
It was him! The Alpha!
Alpha Cole's eyes flashed black, and a growl rumbled in his chest. In an instant my eyes found the floor. Keeping eye contact angered them. The wolves within them saw eye contact as a challenge. I didn't want my big day ruined by an egotistical Alpha, who thought I was challenging his authority.
Alpha Cole let out a grunt as he passed our table heading towards the back corner of the room. I watched his bulky back muscles, as they flexed through his white long sleeved button up shirt. He had the sleeves of his shirt folded a quarter of the way up his muscular arms. A special table sat empty and awaiting their arrival. I noted that the tables position was set up so that the wolves could see the entire restaurant, their were no blind spots. I noticed that when they reached their table, Alpha Cole sat down first, and once he was seated, the rest of the group took their seats. I quickly averted my eyes once more, but a moment later I accidentally made eye contact with Alpha Cole once more. Our waitress brought my attention back to her with a quiet voice.
"Any dessert?" she asked in a hushed tone as her eyes wandered to each of us.
"Actually, we will just take the check please," my father replied.
The waitress quickly hurried off to fetch the check for my father, and I noticed she kept her eyes on the floor as she did so. The restaurants atmosphere had shifted quite dramatically. Everyone seemed to be uncomfortable with the beasts who were seated nearby. My father paid for the meal, and made the waitress happy when he told her she could keep the change. It was a good tip for her, so I couldn't blame her for her obvious happiness. We all got up from our seats to leave, and unable to resist, I took another look at the beasts table.
Alpha Cole's gaze locked with mine. I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. Alpha Cole had a scowl upon his face. His face was one I would never forget. His features screamed masculinity, top dog and power hungry. He had a five o' clock shadow lining his jaw, and it complimented his tanned complexion perfectly. He was hands down the most stunning man I had ever seen, he was gorgeous! But he was also a monster, and I had to remember that.
His eyes flashed black, and I knew in that moment that I had screwed up. He scowled at me once more. I was the last member of our group out of the door, and I quickly ran to my family. Jumping into our car, I softly shouted, "Dad, quick we need to go now, hurry!"
Without question, my father sped out of the parking lot, as my mother asked, "Lara? Are you okay? What happened?"
As our car raced out of the parking lot and down the highway, Scott and I looked out of our back window, and we saw one of the giants, standing in the parking lot. He was watching as our car made a speedy getaway. He didn't bother to try and chase us down though, for which I was grateful.
I couldn't believe I had been so stupid. How could I have been so stupid?
When we pulled up at our cabin, I was surprised to see my aunt, and uncle, and Haven were already waiting for us in our front yard.
"What are you guys doing here?" I asked, as soon as I got out of the car.
"We need to talk," my father said, as he looked at me and my mother and Scott. We all made our way inside in silence, and sat in the lounge room waiting to hear what my father had to say.
"What's going on?" Scott asked after a few minutes, voicing my question.
"As you all know, tomorrow is the sacrifice," my uncle said. We all nodded. It was not something any of us could forget. "Well there is something we need to do," he said.
"If one of us gets chosen for the sacrifice, the family needs to get out of here. We cannot risk those beasts killing our family if we do something to anger them," Haven announced, surprising me along with my brother and my parents.
"She's right. Those beasts, they won't kill you if they are angry with you. They will want you to suffer. And what better way to do that then by killing the ones you love," my uncle explained.
"He's right," my father agreed.
"So, where do we go?" my mother asked, "I mean, no matter where we go, we will still have to deal with those beasts."
"We have a place where we can go," my uncle replied.
"You do realize we will be abandoning them, right?" Scott said, pointing to me and Haven."If one of them were to get chosen, we will be abandoning them."
"Use your head boy, they never come back, ever. So how can we be abandoning them, when if they get chosen, they are already lost to us forever," my uncle snapped.
"Scott, this has to happen," Haven whispered.
We all sat in the lounge room talking about the upcoming sacrifice, and their plans to leave town should Haven or I be sacrificed. Eventually the three of them left, and I made my way upstairs to bed, dreading what lay in store for me the following morning.
Would I be sacrificed? Would Haven?
The discussion we had had last night with my aunt and uncle and my cousin Haven had left me feeling restless and worried. If one of us were chosen for the sacrifice, would my family be able to get away from here? I was feeling uneasy to the point it was making me feel nauseous. I hated the fact that we were offered up to the werewolves as sacrifices. But seeing them last night up close like that, in a group like setting, had me feeling terrified. I had heard and read a lot about werewolves to gain an understanding of them, but until last night, the only one I had ever seen up close had been Carter. The werewolves at the restaurant last night had been bigger then Carter, a lot bigger.I got out of bed and made my way into the bathroom. I quickly pulled my hair up into a pony tail before taking my shower. After my shower I quickly brushed my teeth. I slipped on my bathrobe before making my way out of my bathroom, and back into my bedroom. Once I was in my bedroom, I began
I was led outside to a black SUV, which was parked in a secluded spot away from prying eyes and ears. I was relieved to see my family waiting beside the SUV. I would have five minutes to say my goodbyes to them. Five minutes wasn't much time, but given the circumstances, it was better then nothing. When I joined my family, they all threw their arms around me in a group hug, and as crazy as it may seem, I felt their love for me in that moment. As they pulled back from me, Haven quietly hissed, "What the hell were you thinking? Do you know what they will do to you if they find out the truth?"I quickly shushed her not wanting to risk anyone overhearing us, especially the werewolves. I knew what I had done had been risky. But to me, it was a chance worth taking. My brother took me into his warm embrace and whispered, "You're strong. You're a survivor. I know you will be fine. It's only twelve months, remember that. You will be back home before you know it."When he releas
As we drove away, leaving my family behind, I watched anxiously as civilization disappeared out of my line of sight. I knew I had done a bad thing, a dangerous thing, something that could potentially get me killed. But I had done it for all the right reasons! If these wolves were to ever find out that I wasn't Haven, they would kill me for sure, along with my family. We would all be slaughtered like the sheep these beasts thought we were. But I couldn't let Haven die. I couldn't let her be one of their victims.I don't know how much time passed before the smooth county road turned into a bumpy dirt track. The woods became thicker and I felt my anxiety increase. I had never been this far away from town before. This was an area that was heavily patrolled by beasts. The patrolling beasts stopped anyone who tried to enter these lands. The entire time we were driving, the werewolves in the car with me remained silent as the car continued making its way through the mountains.
Heidi walked quickly, leading me through the expensively furnished mansion. Soon we were walking down a hallway that had a tiled floor. The pale cream walls were lined with large paintings, which looked to me like they should be in a museum or art gallery somewhere. At the end of the hallway there was an inconspicuous door, and I was surprised when Heidi opened the door and started leading me downstairs. I followed her down the narrow staircase in silence, and tried to let my eyes adjust to the growing darkness, as we got further into what I now realized was the basement.Once we were standing at the bottom of the staircase, I tried to take in my surroundings. The floor was just your standard concrete slab floor. The basement was also dusty, and had the unmistakable musty smell of mold in the air. The air felt thick in here. I watched as Heidi made her way over to an old wooden door and opened it, revealing an old bathroom. There was nothing nice about this bathroom. It
I lay there in the silence of the tiny room, breathing in the heavy musty air. It felt stifling in here. I couldn't fall asleep despite feeling tired out from the craziness of the day.I looked around the room and saw a vent in the wall beneath the wooden table in my room. Getting up off my bed, I made my way over to the vent to check it out. I quietly undid the screws and lifted the cover off, and took a look at the inside of the vent. There was nothing else in there, and it had an adequate amount of space, so I made a decision. This would be the ideal spot to hide my bag whenever I was out of the room. I grabbed my bag and put it in the vent before placing the cover back on and doing up the screws.Getting up off the floor, I quickly made my bed, and when I was done, lay back down on it. I don't know how long I had been laying there on my bed when there was a ruckus at my door. It was apparent that someone was trying to get into my room. I waited on my be
Alpha Cole lifted one of the large chunks of meat off the tray and began to chow down on it in a manner befitting that of a wild animal. As I watched him devour the meat, I mentally chanted, "Don't vomit, don't vomit, don't vomit." I was feeling nauseated at the sight of the beasts seated before me, who were eating their meal like a pack of wild dogs tearing into a carcass."Haven," a warm voice said.I wasn't paying attention though, because I was too busy trying not to throw up to notice someone was addressing me."Haven," a deep voice called.Suddenly it hit me. Shit! I'm Haven! Taking a step forward, I was aware of the sound of what sounded like a glass hitting the table hard. I wasn't about to look up though to find out for sure, because I honestly didn't want to die."Fill my glass," Alpha Cole growled."Wait, fill his glass. With what? Heidi had never told me what Alpha Cole drank with his dinner," I thought, beginning to
When the wolves had finally finished eating, they all got up from the table and left the dining hall, leaving us girls to clean up their mess. As he was leaving the dining room, Alpha Cole gave me one last long lingering look. As the beasts left the room, the tension in the room slowly dissipated. I stood and watched as the girls all began to visibly relax. Heidi went and grabbed a couple of cleaning rags and dipped them into a big plastic tub of water.Walking over to me, she handed me a cloth and said, "We have to clean the table and each chair."As I began to wash the chair that Alpha Cole had been sitting in, I noticed that we weren't using any cleaning products, just hot water. I didn't say anything about it though, not wanting to be laughed at again. As if picking up on my thoughts, Heidi said, "We don't use cleaning products here. The werewolves don't like scented soaps. So to clean we just use hot water and good old fashioned elbow grease. We clean the di
I was still standing in the spot where I had ended up, after Beta Chad had dragged me into the office. I was absentmindedly rubbing where Beta Chad had grabbed my arm. These beasts are so rough! At some point they were bound to break bones. I looked up and saw that Alpha Cole's attention was on the paperwork on his desk. Suddenly, he looked up and caught me watching him. The gaze he gave me made my core clench. "What the fuck?" I thought, shocked by my physical response to him."Come here," he snapped, pointing his pointer finger to the side of his chair.Unbelievable! He was commanding me like I was a dog. It seemed like I was nothing more than a bitch to him. It was obvious my life had zero value to him or the members of his pack. To him, I was just like every other girl before me. Well... he was a pathetic excuse of a man as far as I was concerned.I slowly walked towards him, and stood at the edge of his desk, not wanting to get any closer to him
