Afternoon came, and Elara was still stuck with piles of documents that blurred into an endless sea of numbers and legal terms.

She groaned, pressing her fingers to her temples. “I can’t take this anymore. These are impossible to understand.”

Langford, who as sitting in the lounge chair across from her, flipped through his own stack and nodded in agreement.

Atlas had sent them over an hour ago, with a note reminding her that, as CEO, she need to know everything going on in her companies.

Afternoon came, and Elara was still stuck with piles of documents that blurred into an endless sea of numbers and legal terms. She groaned, pressing her fingers to her temples. “I can’t take this anymore. These are impossible to understand.”Langford, who as sitting in the lounge chair across from her, flipped through his own stack and nodded in agreement. Atlas had sent them over an hour ago, with a note reminding her that, as CEO, she need to know everything going on in her companies. Her mind wandered to him, somewhere in the building right now. Was he buried in records, or was he flashing that easy smile at some secretary? Or was he out of there already, with one of his so-called flings…She pushed the thought away quickly. Atlas can't be all that occupies your mind, she warned herself. She returned her attention to the papers in front of her, but they blurred out of her focus very quickly. Eventually, she slapped her hands on the desk, jolting Langford and got to her feet.

Elara felt every pair of eyes in the room on her as she walked toward the head of the table. She kept her chin high, her shoulders straight. Reminded herself that she was Elara Harrington and this was all hers. Atlas' eyes never left her face, even as he rose smoothly from the chair, pulling it back for her to sit. “You look magnificent,” he whispered, then stepped aside. She fought back the red heat that rose to her face, before she settled into the seat. A thrill ran through her. This must be what power felt like, real power. She didn't think she would get used to this, not anytime soon. She looked around the table, at the four board members. They were all impeccably dressed, and like last time, she could still feel their oppressiveness, their arrogance, the sheer wealth they commanded. And yet, they were under her. These wealthy people were only part of the board and shareholders because she wanted them to be. They didn't seem too happy about it, though. Because one of them

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO The alarm pulled Elara from a restless sleep at exactly seven o’clock. She lay still for a long moment, staring at the ornate ceiling. Atlas hadn’t returned last night. And his single text had done little to ease her mind. But he could stay away as long as he likes, she thought, swinging her legs over the side of the bed. ‘I have bigger things to worry about.’ The bathroom welcomed her with clouds of steam and the soothing rush of hot water. She lingered under the shower, letting it ease the tension from her shoulders. Picking her clothes was easier this time, now that she knew what aesthetic to go for. She selected a crisp white blouse and tailored black trousers that hugged her slender frame, finishing with a sharp blazer. Simple gold earrings and a sleek ponytail completed the look. She straightened her shoulders and met her own gaze in the mirror. She was loving this new woman, Elara Harrington. The woman who had once let herself be erased was gone. H

Dean moved fast.He drew out his gun, barking orders at his men to fan out after the shooter. Then he grabbed Atlas by the arm and pulled him away from the bloodied scene, half-shielding him as they retreated from the building.Atlas’s blood boiled with every step. Someone had the fucking nerve to attempt something like that, to dare pull a trigger in his face, on his own operation. “They’re getting bold,” he growled as they reached the car. “Too fucking bold.”“We can complain later.” Dean opened the driver’s side door of his Camaro, his eyes still darting around. “For now, get in. I’m driving you out.”“Not necessary.” Atlas shook his head, leaning on the car. “Look, the guy could still be out there-” “No, he's not,” Atlas snapped. “Whoever took that shot was a damn good sniper, do you think he would wait around to be caught?”“We still have to get you to safety, Atlas.” “Don’t you get it? If they wanted me dead, I’d be on the floor next to that guy” Atlas said flatly. He star

Atlas sat at the long dining table, one leg crossed casually over the other, a glass of red wine in his hand. The chandelier light cast soft shadows across the polished wood and the array of dishes the staff had prepared. But he had little interest in dinner at the moment. He had seen the look that passed over Elara's face when he had gotten that call. It was from one of his old time flings (was it Penny or Peggy? He couldn't remember), one of the ones who couldn't take a damn hint. He had made it plain and clear to every lady that he was involved in: he didn't want relationships or attachment or commitment. But of course this one had to call, right when he was having a moment with Elara. She claimed she had seen some gossip blog nonsense about him and a “new girlfriend.” He’d cut the call short, but was starting to contemplate tracking all their numbers down, and blocking them. The sound of footsteps made him look up. Elara walked in, graceful as ever, but he noticed she woul

Elara stepped out of the study, trying not to bang the door on her way out. She needed air and some space. Anything but another second in that room with him.She couldn't tell what exactly had annoyed her: the heady feeling she got when their hands had touched or the lady who was calling. It didn't matter, not in the slightest. She was just going for some air, and not hurrying away from him.She hadn’t gone far down the hallway when Clare sought her attention.“Dinner will be ready in a few minutes, Miss Elara,” she said with a polite smile.“Thank you, Clare,” Elara replied, forcing her expression to be neutral. “You don't have to be that formal with me, though.” “Miss Harrington insists.” “Amelia?” Elara lifted a brow, suddenly realizing that her aunt was missing, again. “I haven't seen her all evening.”“She headed out earlier.”“Does she say where she goes on these evenings?” “No, she doesn't.” “That's weird.” Clare looked like she was about to say something else, but she p
