“Your sister is in bed with your fiancé.”

Naomi gasped as she stared at the screen. Three photographs loaded beneath the anonymous message. Phoebe lay under the sheets in Renji’s bedroom with her bare shoulder against his chest. Renji was shirtless beside her, and the final picture showed his hand resting near her waist. Naomi recognised the room immediately. She had lived in the Jing mansion for six months and knew the grey bedding, the dark headboard and the watch Renji always left beside him.

A knock sounded at the door. “Naomi, the cars are ready.”

“I need ten minutes,” she called.

Her wedding dress had already been fastened, but the veil was still waiting to be placed over her hair. Naomi gathered the train into her arms, grabbed her phone and left through the side entrance.

Her father’s house was close, yet the drive felt unbearable with the photographs still open beside her. She had planned to marry Renji, the son of the most renowned Jing family that afternoon, stand beside him before both founding families and begin the life she had spent six months trying to build. Instead, her younger sister had spent the night in his bed.

Naomi pushed through the front door and found her mother leaving the sitting room.

“What are you doing here?” her mother Katerina Bellari demanded. “The ceremony should have started.”

“Where is Phoebe?”

Katerina seemed confused. “Why?”

“Is she here?.”

“Naomi, whatever this is, it can wait.”

Naomi held out the phone with shaking hands. “Can this wait?”

Her mother moved through the pictures without showing the outrage Naomi expected. Just then, her father entered, already dressed for the wedding, and took the phone from her.

“Who sent these?” he asked.

“I don’t know. An anonymous account “

Phoebe appeared on the staircase in a black backless satin dress she had chosen for the ceremony. Although the colors of the day did not include black. Naomi strode across the room before anyone could stop her and shoved the photographs into Phoebe’s hands.

“Did you sleep with Renji?”

Phoebe’s eyes darted to their mother then back to Naomi

“You already know the answer.”

Naomi’s jaw clenched. “I want to hear you say it.”

Phoebe shrugged. “I went to see him.”

“And?”

Phoebe tilted her head. “We spent the night together.”

“Spent the night?” Naomi barked. “Did you end up naked in my husband’s bed, yes or no?”

“He is not your husband yet is he?” Phoebe sneered

Naomi and Phoebe being sisters never had a close sisterhood relationship since childhood up to teenage years and adulthood. Phoebe always insisted she deserved everything Naomi ever got including Renji.

Naomi tightened her grip on the wedding dress. “You knew I was marrying him today.”

“You also knew he never wanted this marriage.”

Mr. Bellari stepped forward. “Phoebe, that is enough.” He barked

“No, let her finish,” Naomi protested. “She has clearly wanted to say this for a long time.”

Phoebe descended another step. “You were chosen to marry the Alpha because you are older. That does not mean you are the woman he wants.”

Katerina returned the phone to Naomi. “There is no reason for this to become a public disgrace.”

Naomi turned to her. “My sister slept with my fiancé hours before our wedding, and you are worried about what people will say?”

“Phoebe did nothing wrong if Renji wanted her too.”

The words stunned everyone. Even Phoebe stared at her mother, while Naomi gaped at her in disbelief.

Mr. Bellari rounded on his wife “How can you say that?”

“That is the truth Naomi needs to hear,” she replied. “If Naomi wants to abandon the marriage, Phoebe can take her place. Renji has already slept with her making his choice known and she has always been better suited to become Luna anyway”

Naomi had spent her entire life watching her mother choose Phoebe first, and she never understood why but hearing her offer the wedding to Phoebe while Naomi still wore the bridal dress left her speechless.

“You already decided she should replace me,” Naomi said.

“I am trying to protect this family. The Jings are expecting a Bellari daughter, and Phoebe is also a Bellari.”

“She betrayed me.” Her voice choked

“She did not force Renji into bed. He’s not a child. Stop blaming your sister because your relationship failed before the ceremony.”

Phoebe lowered her head, but she made no attempt to deny their mother’s words.

Naomi turned to her father. “Did you know about this?”

“No.” He handed the phone back to her. “Are you sure those photos are real—“

“Father they’re real. I came here to tell you the wedding is over.”

Katerina scoffed. “Then let Phoebe marry him. There is still time to fix her hair and change the dress. The guests do not need to know you were ever supposed to stand beside him.”

Naomi became furious. “You cannot even pretend to care about what they did to me.”

“This is bigger than your feelings. Grow up Naomi”

Mr. Bellari called her name and led her away from the staircase. “Tell me one thing, have you spoken to Renji about this?”

Naomi shook her head and heaved a sigh “Okay. Your mother will not decide this for you. If you want the ceremony cancelled, I will cancel it.”

Naomi’s eyes narrowed “If I choose to cancel the wedding what happens “

“I want you to think about what you are doing before you decide. The Bellaris and Jings founded this pack together. Your grandfather and Renji’s grandfather built this alliance, and the elders are already gathered. Cancelling the ceremony now will disgrace both families, but I will not force you to continue.”

That was the only reason she agreed to the marriage six months ago. She had never considered marrying Renji. She had multiple suitors before but Naomi had always believed she would one day find her fated mate, but the years passed and he never came. When her father proposed the alliance between the Bellari and Jing families, she accepted it for the sake of her family. She expected nothing more than a respectful marriage. Instead, she fell in love with Renji the moment they met on the first date her father arranged.

Naomi unlocked her phone again looking at the photograph. Renji’s face was partly hidden, but there was no mistaking him.

Mr. Belleri touched her arm. “The choice is yours “

He kept saying that but in reverse the choice was not hers to make because she will be disappointing the entire family. Naomi returned to the sitting room.

“I am going back to the wedding,” she announced.

Phoebe lurched to her feet. “After everything you saw?”

“You said Renji never wanted me.”She paused “I’ll wait until he says it to my face.”

Katerina flicked an impatient glance over her daughter. “Then stop making a spectacle of yourself and embarrassing us. All the guest are waiting”

Naomi snatched her veil from the sofa. “You should be more embarrassed by the daughter who slept with her sister’s fiancé.”

Phoebe’s mouth fell open. Katerina’s fingers slipped from her hair, and the relatives now gathered in the sitting room began murmuring among themselves. Her father stepped between both women before Katerina could fire back.

“That is enough. We are already late.”

The driver held the bridal car open outside. Naomi climbed in alone, while her father and mother entered the second car. The relatives who had been waiting at the house separated into the remaining cars and followed them back to the ceremony.

Someone fixed Naomi’s veil at the entrance. Her father offered his arm, the music started and the doors swung open.

Naomi stepped inside and lifted her head.

Renji spun towards the entrance with irritation stamped across his face, but the instant their eyes met, it vanished.

He smiled.

The dark-brown waves of his hair had been left tousled, with a few strands falling over his forehead. His short beard was neatly trimmed against his light-medium skin, and the smile changed him so completely that Naomi’s fingers loosened around her father’s arm.

She almost smiled back.

Then the photographs flashed through her mind.

Naomi straightened, tightened her hold on her father and continued down the aisle.

She walked toward the altar knowing her marriage may already be over.
