Chapter thirty-two

Third person pov

Earlier that day,

Miles away from the Hernandez mansion and the Cafe, someone smiled as two messages disappeared from a screen at exactly the same time.

The phone rested on the table between a pair of gloved hands.

A smile slowly formed behind the silence of the room.

One message had already been read.

Another was about to be sent.

The thumb hovered over the screen for a brief second before pressing send.

A soft vibration followed. It's being delivered.

  • The Billionaire Doctor's Unwilling Wife    Heartbeat for him

Chapter forty-oneEmily Nothing could have prepared me for this.Especially not the serious look Seth was giving me, as though I were the unreasonable one for hesitating to help him to the restroom.Like... hello? How exactly was I supposed to do this when we both knew the circumstances surrounding this marriage?“Come on, Emily. I'm pressed. Badly. Just see it as though you're helping a patient.”A patient. Right.I closed my eyes for a second and raised a hand to my temple, trying to convince myself that the man standing in front of me was nothing more than someone who needed medical assistance. Not my husband. Not Seth. Just a patient. It should have worked but it didn't. With a reluctant sigh, I walked toward him and slipped his arm over my shoulder. His weight shifted against me as I helped him stand. He was heavier than I expected. His body leaned slightly into mine, and before I could adjust my balance, his other hand came around my waist.I stiffened.A small shiver ran thr

  • The Billionaire Doctor's Unwilling Wife    When he needed me

Chapter FortyEmilyDaniel came to get me not long after, quietly informing me that he was done changing Seth.I was only three steps away from the door.I hadn't gone to my room.I couldn't.My mind had been too loud, running through every possible explanation for what had happened on the terrace. When I finally walked back inside, Seth was still lying where we'd left him.His temperature had come down a little, and his breathing remained steady. That should have been enough to ease my mind.It wasn't.I pulled the chair closer to the bed and sat down.Daniel stayed for another hour after changing him. I could tell he was growing restless, probably because of work, so when he hesitated about leaving, I urged him to go.“I'll call you if anything changes,” I had assured him. He'd looked at Seth one more time before leaving. Now it was just the two of us.The room had grown quieter.Outside the window, the sun was slowly disappearing beyond the horizon, painting the sky with the last t

  • The Billionaire Doctor's Unwilling Wife    Something is wrong

Chapter thirty-nineEmily“Seth!”My voice tore through the terrace but he didn't answer. For one horrible second, I simply stood there, staring at him as if my mind had refused to understand what my eyes had just witnessed. Then his body hit the ground and that was when I moved.I don't even remember crossing the distance between us. One second I was standing several feet away, and the next I was on my knees beside him, my hands hovering uselessly over his body.“Seth?”Nothing.My heart slammed against my ribs.“Seth!”I touched his shoulder.Still nothing. His eyes remained closed, his face frighteningly still.No.No, no, no.This couldn't be happening. He was fine a few minutes ago.He had been standing there, looking at me, breathing normally. He had even smiled. And now he was lying on the ground like his body had simply decided to betray him.My fingers trembled as I pressed them against his neck.I felt it. The pulse.Thank God.There was one, weak. But there.I released a sh

  • The Billionaire Doctor's Unwilling Wife    Seth!

Chapter thirty-eightSethI feel sick.Scratch that. I am sick. Not the kind that leaves one bedridden, just like what I see everyday at the hospital. This one is the kind that leaves one hopeless. Helpless. Powerless. The brain, mind, and inner kind. All my searches lead nowhere. Everywhere had been quiet with her. She doesn't need to tell me. I know.I know she had not been receiving any threats, after that cafe incident. The one she had still not let me know. Not that I didn't know anyway. Today marked exactly one week before we returned to work. Not as the presidents of two separate hospitals, but as the co-owners of a single institution born from the merger. That is why I had decided it's time to take a short break from this by shifting my focus to the hospital.I have to make sure everything is in place before we start work. Emily might not know this, but for the past week, I've been in constant contact with the management team handling the hospitals. Every day. Every nigh

  • The Billionaire Doctor's Unwilling Wife    A father's instinct

Chapter thirty-sevenEmilyThat look.I'd seen it before. Years ago.On my father. The night before he died.It was... exhaustion. The kind that settled deep in a person's soul. The kind no amount of sleep could erase. That same look was right in my front. Not staring back at me, but at his food. Only this time… It belonged to Seth. Not my late father. From where he sat a chair away, his shoulders squared as always, his expression carefully composed. Anyone looking at him would see the same powerful, intimidating Dr. Seth Hernandez. But I saw something different. The faint shadows beneath his eyes. The slight tension in his jaw.The distant look that flickered across his face before disappearing so quickly I almost convinced myself I'd imagined it.My fingers curled around the edge of the dining table. What's wrong with him?The question surfaced before I could stop it.I hated it.Hated that I noticed.Hated that I cared enough to make my thoughts wander. The words climbed to the ti

  • The Billionaire Doctor's Unwilling Wife    Is he okay?

Chapter thirty-sixEmilyFive hours.Five whole hours, and he still wasn't back. The clock in the living room chimed eight, the sound echoing through the unusually quiet house.Xena had left an hour ago.Since then, I hadn't moved from the couch. The television played quietly in the background, but I couldn't tell you what was on. I'd been staring at the same channel of news for nearly twenty minutes without understanding a single word.Where was he?I frowned at myself. Why was I even asking that?He was free to come and go.So was I...Except I wasn't. I mean, it's just a one time outing to the cafe but his?.That stupid clause in the contract floated back into my mind.Spend time together. No working for a month. What a joke. For the past week, Seth had spent more time outside this house than inside it, leaving me behind with nothing but silence, Mrs. Briggs' overly sweet concern, and my own thoughts. If anyone was breaking the agreement, it was him.A familiar sound cut through th
