Sienna's Pov

Ryker Cross spent two years making me believe I was his future. Then he paid me to walk away from his life without knowing I was carrying his future.

I opened my eyes to white walls and soft light coming through wide windows. My head felt heavy. Something beeped steadily near the bed.

A man in a white coat sat in the chair beside me. Tall. Dark hair. Calm eyes. He leaned forward when he saw I was awake.

“Easy,” he said. “Don’t try to sit up yet.”

My mouth was dry. “Where am I?”

“St. Margaret’s Private. You’re safe.”

I looked at his face. Nothing about it felt known. “Who are you?”

He didn’t hesitate. “Knox Sterling. I’m your husband.”

The word sat in the air between us. I stared at him. “Husband.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t remember you.”

“I know. The doctors said that might happen.”

I tried to push myself up. Pain flared along my side. He put a hand on my shoulder, light but firm.

“Stay still. You had surgery two days ago.”

“Surgery for what?”

“A car hit you. Hit and run. You were lucky the ambulance got there fast.”

I looked down at my body under the thin blanket. My hand moved on its own and rested on the slight curve of my stomach. I froze.

“What’s wrong with me?”

Knox’s voice stayed even. “Nothing is wrong. You’re pregnant. Almost fourteen weeks. The baby is fine.”

I pressed my palm harder against the fabric. “Pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“With your child.”

He nodded once. “With our child.”

I kept my hand there. The shape felt real under my fingers, but nothing in my head matched it. “I don’t remember being pregnant. I don’t remember you. I don’t remember any of this.”

“The trauma caused retrograde amnesia. You remember your childhood and early years, but the last four years are gone. That’s common after a severe impact and the swelling that followed.”

“Four years.”

“Yes.”

I looked around the room again. Flowers sat on the windowsill. A card leaned against the vase. The blanket smelled clean and unfamiliar.

“How long have we been married?”

“Two years.”

“Where do we live?”

“A house on the north side of the city. Quiet street. You’ll see it when you’re stronger.”

I swallowed. “Why don’t I feel anything when I look at you?”

His expression didn’t change, but his hand left my shoulder and rested on the bed rail. “The mind protects itself after trauma. Feelings can come back slower than facts. Or they might stay buried for a while. We take it one day at a time.”

“What if they never come back?”

“Then we build from here. I’m not going anywhere.”

I studied his face for any crack. There was none. “You sound very sure.”

“I’ve had days to sit with the doctors and hear the same report. Certainty is all I can offer you right now.”

A nurse stepped in, checked the monitor, and left without speaking. The door closed softly.

I turned back to him. “What was I doing when the car hit me?”

“You were walking home from a late appointment. It was raining. The driver never stopped.”

“Did the police find them?”

“Not yet.”

I kept my hand on my stomach. The baby shifted, a small flutter I felt more than saw. My breath caught.

“Did I know I was pregnant before the accident?”

“Yes. We found out together six weeks ago. You were happy. Nervous, but happy.”

“I don’t feel happy. I feel empty.”

He nodded like he expected that. “That’s normal. The medication and the memory loss both do that.”

“What if this is a mistake? What if you’re not who you say you are?”

His voice stayed quiet. “You can ask the nurses. You can ask the hospital records. My name is on every form as your spouse and the father. I can show you photographs when you’re ready. But I won’t force anything on you tonight.”

I looked at the window. The light had shifted. “I keep waiting for something to click. Nothing does.”

“It might take weeks. Or months. Some patients never recover every detail.”

“And you’re fine with that?”

“I’m fine with you being alive. Everything else we handle as it comes.”

Silence settled for a few seconds. The monitor kept its steady sound.

I shifted my legs under the blanket. “What do I do now?”

“You rest. You eat when they bring the tray. You let the physical therapist help you stand tomorrow. I’ll be here most of the day.”

“You don’t have work?”

“I cleared my schedule. I’m the chief of surgery here. They can manage without me for a while.”

I stared at him. “You’re a doctor.”

“Yes.”

“And my husband.”

“Yes.”

The two facts sat side by side and still refused to connect. I pulled my hand away from my stomach and then put it back, like the shape might disappear if I stopped touching it.

“I need to know my name,” I said.

Knox looked at me carefully. “Your name is Sienna Vale Sterling.”

The full name settled over me. Sienna felt right in a distant way. Sterling felt like a coat that belonged to someone else.

I repeated it under my breath. “Sienna Vale Sterling.”

He watched my face. “Does any of it feel familiar?”

I closed my eyes for a second and opened them again. The room was the same. The man was the same. The weight in my stomach was the same.

“The first part does,” I said. “The last part doesn’t.”

He reached out and covered my hand with his, light and steady. “That’s enough for today. We’ll work on the rest tomorrow.”

I left my hand under his and stared at the ceiling. Somewhere inside the missing four years a version of me had chosen this man and this life. The version lying in the bed could not find her.

Outside the window the light kept fading, and the only thing I knew for certain was the quiet flutter under my palm and the stranger holding my hand.

Ryker's povHe walked to the desk and rested both hands on the edge. “Sienna is stable for now. The amnesia is real. The pregnancy is real. Any sudden emotional shock can still send her blood pressure up and put the baby at risk. That is the only fact that matters in this room.”The words hit like they were meant to. I already knew the medical part. Hearing it from him made it worse. “I’m the father.”“You’re the man who handed her a check and told her she was a distraction the same night a car nearly killed her. That is also a fact.”My jaw locked. The check. I could still see her face when I put it on the desk. I had told myself it was cleaner that way. Cleaner for who, I still couldn’t answer. “You don’t get to rewrite what happened between us.”“I’m not rewriting it. I’m containing it. She has no memory of you. She believes I am her husband. That belief is currently keeping her calm. You will not take it from her.”Containing it. Like she was a problem to manage. Like the two year

Ryker's povI pushed past the nurse at the desk before she finished asking for my name.“Sir, you can’t go through there.”“Sienna Vale. Where is she?”“Are you family?”“I’m the emergency contact. Let me through.”A second nurse stepped into the hallway. “Mr. Cross, the patient is in recovery. Visitors are limited.”“I’m not a visitor.”I kept walking. The corridor smelled of disinfectant and floor wax. My shoes left wet marks from the rain outside. A security guard started toward me. Blaze appeared from behind and spoke to him in a low voice. Ryker’s POVThe lights in the ballroom were too bright and the cameras kept flashing in my face. Freya stood beside me with her hand on my arm, smiling the way she had practiced in the car.“Mr. Cross, one more for the society page,” a photographer called.I turned my head the required angle. Freya’s grip tightened for a second.“You’re quiet tonight,” she said under her breath.“I’m here. That’s what you asked for.”“I asked for a partner who looks like he wants to be standing next to me.”“I am standing next to you.”She kept the smile on for the next camera. “My father is watching from the mezzanine. Try not to look like you’re counting the minutes.”A waiter passed with champagne. I took a glass I had no intention of drinking. Across the room someone laughed too loudly. The string quartet played something forgettable.Freya’s publicist appeared at her elbow. “We need five minutes with the Journal reporter. They’re running the engagement as the lead tomorrow.”“Give us a moment,” F

Ryker Cross spent two years making me believe I was his future. Then he paid me to walk away from his life without knowing I was carrying his future.I stood across from his desk while the rain hammered the windows. He didn’t ask me to sit. He just opened a drawer and took out a thick envelope.“Take this,” he said.“What is it?”“Severance. Lease payments. Six months of living costs. It’s enough.”I stared at the envelope. “You’re ending it like this?”“I’m ending it cleanly.”“Cleanly?” My voice came out sharper than I meant. “You called me three nights ago and told me to leave the door unlocked.”“That was a mistake.”“You stayed until four in the morning.”“I shouldn’t have.”I stepped closer to the desk. “Say what you actually mean, Ryker.”He looked at me the same way he looked at spreadsheets that no longer balanced. “This arrangement is over.”“Arrangement. That’s what you’re calling it now.”“Yes.”“Two years. You kept an apartment for me. You bought the dresses I wore to tho
