MasukCatherine couldn't take her eyes off the photograph.
For twenty-one years, she had believed her daughter was dead.
Now a doctor stood before her, claiming the child had survived.
“Tell me everything,” she whispered.
Dr. Hayes closed the folder.
“Your daughter was born shortly before midnight. She was healthy, but someone had already arranged for her identity to be changed.”
“Who?”
“Evelyn Bennett.”
Catherine shook her head.
“Why would Evelyn take my child?”
“Because she believed Charles would use the baby to control the Vale inheritance.”
Charles's name made Jonathan's expression darken.
“Where did Evelyn take her?”
Dr. Hayes hesitated.
“I don't know. I was instructed to record the child as deceased. I refused to write the final report until I was certain she had left the hospital.”
Catherine grabbed the edge of the table.
“You let me bury an empty coffin?”
The doctor lowered his head.
“I was threatened. I thought keeping quiet was the only way to keep the child alive.”
Catherine turned away.
Samuel approached her.
“We'll find her.”
She looked at him.
“You don't understand. I spent years searching for a grave. I visited it every birthday. I spoke to a child who wasn't there.”
Samuel gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Then perhaps it's time you found the daughter who is.”
---
Elena remained beside the hospital register.
Three babies.
Three identities.
And a grandmother who had apparently decided which child deserved to disappear.
She turned towards Dr. Hayes.
“What happened to the other two babies?”
The doctor pointed to the register.
“Adrian was registered as Amelia's son. That record was later altered by Charles. Margaret's daughter was registered as Elena Bennett, but her identification bracelet was changed before discharge.”
Elena frowned.
“So the hospital records cannot confirm my biological identity?”
“Not without the original bracelet transfer sheet.”
“Where is it?”
Dr. Hayes looked uncomfortable.
“Evelyn took it.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Do you know where she kept it?”
“No. But she left something with me before she disappeared.”
He opened his leather folder and removed a small envelope.
On its front was written:
TO BE OPENED WHEN THE THREE CHILDREN ARE FOUND.
Adrian examined it.
“Which three children?”
The doctor looked towards Catherine.
“Her daughter, Adrian and Elena.”
Elena's stomach tightened.
“Why would Evelyn group us together?”
Dr. Hayes gave a tired sigh.
“Because she believed the three of you were connected to the original agreement in a way nobody else understood.”
---
Back at the mansion, Victoria was pacing when they arrived.
She immediately noticed Catherine's expression.
“What's happened?”
Catherine held up the photograph.
“My daughter is alive.”
Victoria stopped.
“What?”
“She was born on the same night as Adrian and Elena. Evelyn took her from the hospital and gave her another identity.”
Victoria slowly sat down.
“Then Charles knows?”
“He probably knew before any of us,” Jonathan replied.
Richard entered carrying a laptop.
“I checked the old Vale financial records. There's something strange.”
He placed the laptop on the table.
For years, a monthly payment had been made to a private residence under a false company name.
The payments began twenty-one years ago and stopped only six months earlier.
Samuel examined the details.
“Who received the money?”
Richard enlarged the account information.
“An individual registered as Grace Williams.”
Elena immediately recognised the name.
“Grace? The nurse we met?”
Richard shook his head.
“Different Grace. This woman lives in the northern part of the country.”
Catherine leaned forward.
“Show me the address.”
Richard displayed it.
Catherine's face changed.
“I know that place.”
“Where is it?” Adrian asked.
“St. Martha's Residence.”
Elena looked at Jonathan.
“That's where we found Evelyn.”
Jonathan nodded slowly.
“Then Evelyn may have been hiding more than one person there.”
---
That evening, Adrian found Elena standing alone on the balcony.
She was holding the hospital photograph.
“Thinking about everything again?” he asked.
She nodded.
“I'm beginning to wonder whether I ever knew my own story.”
Adrian stood beside her.
“You know who you are, Elena. Whatever those records say, they don't erase the life you've lived.”
She looked at him.
“What if Margaret isn't my biological mother?”
“Then we'll find out who is. But Margaret's place in your life doesn't disappear.”
Elena looked down at the photograph.
“And what about Lily? What if someone changes her identity too?”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“Nobody will take her from us.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Elena noticed something written on the back of the photograph.
A sentence almost hidden beneath the faded ink.
THE CHILD WAS SENT TO THE WOMAN WHO HAD LOST HER OWN.
Elena read it aloud.
Adrian took the photograph.
“Margaret?”
“Perhaps. She lost a child before I was born.”
Adrian looked towards the mansion.
“We need to speak to her.”
---
Margaret was in Lily's bedroom, arranging her daughter's clothes.
When Elena entered, she immediately noticed the photograph.
“Where did you get that?”
“From Dr. Hayes.”
Margaret slowly sat down.
Elena placed the photograph beside her.
“Mom, did you lose a baby before me?”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Did you ever find out what happened?”
“No. Daniel told me the baby didn't survive.”
Elena sat beside her.
“What if that wasn't true?”
Margaret covered her mouth.
“Don't say that unless you have proof.”
“I don't. But Evelyn may have taken Catherine's daughter to a woman who had lost her own child.”
Margaret stared at her.
“You think I raised Catherine's daughter?”
Elena couldn't answer.
Margaret shook her head.
“No. I would have known.”
But her voice lacked conviction.
She stood and walked towards an old cabinet.
From the bottom drawer, she removed a small wooden box.
“I kept everything from that night.”
Inside were hospital documents, a tiny knitted blanket and a faded identification bracelet.
Elena picked up the bracelet.
The name had almost disappeared.
But the hospital number was still visible.
Adrian compared it with the number in Dr. Hayes's register.
His expression changed.
“Margaret…”
“What?”
“This bracelet doesn't belong to Elena's hospital record.”
Margaret looked at him.
“What are you saying?”
Adrian turned the bracelet over.
There was another name engraved beneath the faded surface.
CATHERINE VALE.
---
Nobody spoke.
Margaret slowly lowered herself into a chair.
“I was told this belonged to my baby.”
Elena stared at the bracelet.
“Then why do you have Catherine's daughter's identification?”
Before anyone could answer, Jonathan entered the room.
He took one look at the bracelet and stopped.
“Where did you get that?”
Margaret pointed towards the box.
“I kept it from the night Elena was born.”
Jonathan examined it carefully.
Then he looked at Catherine, who had followed him into the room.
Catherine's expression crumbled.
“That's my daughter's bracelet.”
Elena turned towards Margaret.
“Mom, what happened that night?”
Margaret shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Jonathan looked at the bracelet again.
“There is only one person who can explain how this ended up in your possession.”
“Who?” Adrian asked.
Jonathan's answer came quietly.
“Evelyn.”
---
At that moment, Richard rushed into the room.
“There's been an update from St. Martha's Residence.”
Everyone turned.
He held up his phone.
“Someone has checked into the residence under a false name. The security team found an old photograph in her room.”
He showed them the image.
It was a young woman holding a little girl.
Catherine immediately recognised the child.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
“That's my daughter.”
Elena stared at the photograph.
“How old is she there?”
“About five,” Richard answered.
Catherine's eyes filled with tears.
Then she noticed the woman standing behind them.
Her expression changed completely.
“That's Evelyn.”
Jonathan took the phone.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message:
I DIDN'T TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER TO DESTROY YOUR FAMILY. I TOOK HER BECAUSE HER FATHER WAS GOING TO DESTROY HER.
Below it was another sentence.
AND HER FATHER WAS NOT CHARLES VALE.
Adrian stared at the message.DON'T TRUST DANIEL. HE KNOWS WHO THE CHILD IS BECAUSE HE HELPED HIDE HIM.Daniel watched him.“What's wrong?”Adrian turned the phone around.“Richard says you helped hide the fourth child.”Daniel's expression barely changed.“Richard doesn't know what he's talking about.”“Then why is he warning me about you?”“Because he wants to turn you against me.”Elena stepped forward.“Enough. We need the truth, not another argument.”Daniel looked at her.“I've spent years protecting you.”“By lying to me?”“By keeping you alive.”The words silenced her.Margaret moved closer to Daniel.“You knew Isabella?”Daniel nodded.“She was my wife's sister.”“Then why didn't you tell me?”“Because Isabella made me promise never to reveal what happened to her child.”Margaret's eyes filled.“You let me believe she disappeared without explanation.”“She had to.”“Why?”Daniel opened his mouth, but Adrian's phone rang again.Richard.This time Adrian answered and put the ca
Margaret stared at Evelyn.“That's not true.”Evelyn didn't look away.“You know exactly who I'm talking about.”“No, I don't.”“Margaret, please. We've hidden enough.”Margaret shook her head.“I have spent years trying to understand what happened in that hospital. I raised Elena believing she was my daughter. I lost Matthew. I watched Daniel build a life around secrets. But I have never knowingly hidden another child.”Elena stepped closer.“Grandma, who is the fourth child?”Evelyn looked at her.“Someone who grew up believing they had no connection to the Vale family.”“Then tell us their name.”“I can't.”Charles gave a frustrated laugh.“Of course you can't. You appear with another mystery, make accusations, and expect everyone to believe you.”Evelyn turned toward him.“You know more than you're admitting.”“And you know less than you pretend.”Jonathan stepped between them.“Enough. We need to establish what happened before another person gets hurt by these lies.”Adrian picke
Elena couldn't move.Evelyn stood at the entrance, holding the photograph against her chest. For years, the family had searched for her. Some believed she was dead. Others believed she had abandoned them. But she was standing there.Alive.And apparently, carrying another secret.“What do you mean?” Elena finally asked. “What other child did you take?”Evelyn looked around the room.“Before I answer, I need everyone to understand something. The hospital records were not changed to protect one child. They were changed to protect several.”Catherine stepped forward.“You took my daughter.”“I saved your daughter.”“You separated me from her!”Evelyn lowered her eyes.“I know.”Catherine's voice broke.“Do you have any idea what that did to me?”“I do. And I have regretted it every day.”Charles moved closer.“You don't get to return after all these years and pretend you were protecting everyone.”Evelyn looked at him.“You're the last person who should question my decisions.”Charles's
Jonathan didn't move. The message remained on Adrian's phone, its words hanging over the room like a threat.ASK JONATHAN WHO HE BURIED TWENTY YEARS AGO.Elena stared at him.“Who did you bury?”Jonathan looked away.“Someone who should have stayed dead.”Catherine's eyes widened.“Jonathan!”He raised a hand.“Not here.”Charles stepped forward.“No. We're done hiding things. Tell us who was buried.”Jonathan's jaw tightened.“Michael Hayes.”Margaret gasped.Catherine staggered backward.“No,” she whispered. “Michael was alive when I was told he died.”Jonathan nodded.“I know.”Elena looked between them.“Then whose funeral did you attend?”Jonathan took a slow breath.“His brother's.”Adrian frowned.“Margaret just said the man she married wasn't Michael. Are you saying she married his brother?”Jonathan nodded.“Yes.”Margaret shook her head.“That's not what he told me.”“What did he tell you?” Elena asked.Margaret looked confused.“He introduced himself as Michael. He had Mich
The room fell silent.Elena stared at Margaret.“Michael Hayes was your husband?”Margaret nodded slowly.“Before I married Daniel, yes.”Catherine took a step forward.“That isn't possible.”Margaret turned toward her.“I wish it weren't.”“You told me Michael died before I discovered I was pregnant.”“I know what you were told.”Catherine's eyes filled with anger.“Then explain why you were married to him.”Margaret looked down at the photograph in Elena's hands.“Because someone needed to give him a reason to disappear.”Jonathan's expression hardened.“Margaret, be careful.”She ignored him.“Michael was already in danger when I met him. He had discovered something about the original inheritance agreement. Something that could have destroyed the Vale family.”Charles folded his arms.“And you expect us to believe you married him to protect him?”“No,” Margaret replied. “I married him because he asked me to.”Catherine shook her head.“Why would he ask you?”“Because he needed a le
Catherine read the message again.HER FATHER WAS NOT CHARLES VALE.For several seconds, she couldn't speak. Then she looked at Jonathan.“Who was my daughter's father?”Jonathan's expression became guarded.“I thought Charles was.”“So did I,” Catherine replied. “But Evelyn wouldn't have written that unless she knew something.”Adrian examined the photograph.“Could the message be referring to another man?”Richard shook his head.“The photograph was taken years after the child was born. Whoever wrote this wanted Catherine to understand that the truth had been hidden deliberately.”Samuel looked towards Catherine.“Did you have another relationship before Charles?”Catherine hesitated.“There was someone. But I was told he died before I discovered I was pregnant.”Jonathan stepped closer.“Who was he?”Catherine looked at him.“His name was Michael.”The name meant nothing to Elena. But Daniel, who had remained silent near the doorway, suddenly raised his head.“Michael what?”Catheri
