The alarm kept screaming through every room of the house.

Kane moved to the security panel and hit a command. Heavy locks slammed into place along the inner doors. Red lights kept flashing along the baseboards. David stood in the hallway in a T-shirt and jeans, face pale, fists clenched.

“Stay in your room,” Kane ordered.

“Like hell,” David said. “That’s my sister.”

“David, please,” I said. My voice came out tighter than I wanted. “Just for now. Please.”

He looked at me hard, then at Kane, and

The baby slept against my chest for almost a full hour. His small body rose and fell with every soft breath. I kept one hand cupped around his back, feeling the heat of him through the thin blanket. The room stayed quiet except for the low beep of the monitors and the distant sound of carts rolling past in the hall.Kane sat in the chair beside the bed. He had not said much since I asked the question earlier. His elbows rested on his knees, hands clasped loose between them. He watched the baby more than he watched me.“You do not have to answer right now,” I said. My voice came out rough from the long hours.“I know.” He rubbed the back of his neck with one hand. “I just do not want to give you something that sounds like another clause. Another set of rules.”Elizabeth came in carrying a chart. She checked the numbers on the monitor, then looked at the baby still sleeping on me.“Vitals are good. He is a solid weight. You did well.”“Thank you,” I said. She turned to Kane. “You should

The lights in that hall were too bright. They made every face look sharp and tired at the same time. Barbara’s paper sat in the middle of the table like it owned the room. No one touched it. I stood a little behind Kane and watched the way her fingers kept curling and uncurling against the wood.Kane did not grab the paper. He opened his jacket, pulled out a thin folder and a small black recorder, and set them down with quiet care. His hands were steady. Mine were not.“That agreement is a forgery,” he said. His voice stayed even, almost soft. “I have the original draft. Different words. Different dates. And I have this.”He pressed play.Barbara’s own voice filled the hall. Clear. Cold. She talked about making a backup claim in case the surrogate became a problem. She talked about fixing signatures and shifting dates so everything looked clean. She spoke like the baby was already a piece of property that belonged to the firm. The recording stopped. The silence after it felt heavier t

The public lie kept spreading.Kane spent the next day locking down every remaining channel. I kept the private DNA folder with me at all times. David stayed close. The three guards never left the hallway.By evening Kane received the summons.“They want a formal meeting at the family estate,” he said. “Barbara. The rival representatives. The remaining board.”“They want to force a public answer,” I said.“Yes. And they want it on their ground.”“Then we go. And we take everything.”Kane looked at the folder in my hands. “You are sure?”“I am sure.”The drive to the Kane family estate was long and quiet. High walls. Long driveway. Lights that came on only when the cars passed. The main hall was already full when we arrived. Board members sat along one side of the long table. Two men from the rival firm sat near the front. Barbara stood at the head of the room in a dark coat, calm and ready.Kane walked in first. I followed with the folder and the collected pages. Every eye turned towa

The news about the dead security head and the missing files hit the estate like a second lockdown.Kane left for the clinic within minutes. I stayed with David and the three guards. The house felt too quiet after he was gone. David sat on the edge of the sofa and kept looking at the doors. The guards did not speak. They only watched the windows and the hallway.By the time Kane returned the sky was already light.“They have the files,” he said. He dropped a tablet on the table. “The rival firm. They are already using them.”I picked up the tablet. A public statement filled the screen. Clear. Cold. It claimed the child I carried belonged to a different bloodline entirely. It named no father connected to the Kane line. It called the original contract a fraud. My hands went cold. “They are saying the baby is not yours.”“Yes.”“In public.”“Yes.”David stood behind me. “Can they do that?”Kane’s voice stayed flat. “They just did. My legal team is already on it. But the damage is moving f

The lockdown settled over every property Kane owned like a heavy lid.We went back to the estate under full escort. David was checked by the medical team and then sent to rest under guard. The three men Kane had assigned to me took positions in the hall and did not move far.I felt save and uncomfortable at the sametime Bcs I will not be free to even do what I want nor go where I want as I pleased?;Although it has always been like that since I signed the contract Kane spent the first night on calls. By morning the first pieces of evidence against Barbara arrived.I couldn't wait to know what in the file.I ask Kane to unfold and see what's in the file“She has been feeding them information,” Kane said. He stood at the long table with printed logs spread out. “Call records. Encrypted messages. Timestamps that match every leak we have taken in the last month.”I read one of the pages. “She told them when David left the apartment. She told them about the storage unit.”“Yes.”“And the

The video of David being forced into the van stayed burned in my mind.Kane was already on the radio giving orders. Cars moved. Phones rang. Maps lit up on tablets.“You are staying here,” he said.“No.”“Jennifer. This is not a discussion.”“I am not sitting in a storage unit while my brother is in that van. I am coming.”Kane looked at me hard. “You just left the hospital.”“And David just got taken. I am coming.”He did not argue again. He only pointed to the second car. “You stay in the vehicle until I say otherwise. If anything goes wrong you do not get out. Do you understand?”“I understand.”We moved fast. City lights blurred past. Kane spoke to three different teams at once. Tracking the van’s last signal. Roadblocks. Traffic cameras. Every resource he had was already in motion.“They are heading toward the old rail yards,” one voice said over the radio.“Converge there,” Kane ordered. “No shots unless they fire first. I want David alive and unharmed.”I sat forward in the sea
