“Are you sure about this?” William asked, looking at me from the passenger seat. I sucked in a deep breath, looking outside the car. Everywhere was crowded with paparazzi trying to get a picture of everyone. Vincenzo was one of the most prominent businessmen in town and he had earned a lot of respect over the years. He was launching yet another company and it was a big deal. That was why it was perfect to make my entrance now. “I have never been more sure,” I told him, letting out a slow breath. William nodded and stepped out of the car. I watched him speak to one of my bodyguards. My hands were fidgeting, so I took another deep breath to calm my nerves. I have been doing this since I was 18. I was no longer that little girl who was thrown into the business world overnight. I was Aria Smith. A strong boss lady who controlled the crowd. I wasn’t scared of anyone or anything, and I definitely wasn’t going to dim myself anymore so my husband could shine. That was why I was wearing a fitted fuchsia pink gown that hugged my curves tightly. It was a long gown with an open back and it embraced me like a second skin, highlighting the curve of my waist and hips. It wasn’t revealing except for the open back that left just enough to the imagination. My sleek high ponytail made my neck and back look longer, putting my bare back on display for the world to see. I paired it with small rose gold earrings and left my neck bare. Then I accessorized with simple bracelets and rings. I carried my black mini bag and paired it with black pointed heels. I knew Martha never disappoints and my makeup was done to perfection. Not too heavy, but bold enough to turn heads. I gripped my bag as William opened the car door. I could tell everyone was curious and I could already feel the flashes. William held my hand, helping me out of the car. He was on high alert. At first, everything went still as I made my appearance, and I couldn’t help the small smile on my face. “It’s Aria Smith,” someone said, and I guess it snapped them out of their daze. Suddenly, the flashes increased. People screamed, trying to push past security. “Aria, over here!” “Were you really in a coma?” “What happened that night? Were you driving?!” “Aria, look here! Are the rumors about brain damage true?!” I was bombarded with questions but I paid attention to none of them. My bodyguards and William moved in close, giving me space to pose for the cameras. I flashed them a sweet smile and turned, showing the back of my dress. When I felt I had given them enough, I walked graciously down the mini red carpet and shortly after, we were inside the building. “Well, that was something,” I mumbled to William as my team followed me. They held up my long gown, making sure I was comfortable, and I got a bit emotional at their care. They were just doing their job, but I was certain they cared more for me than my messed up family ever did. “Richard is here,” William whispered to me. “He might see you any moment now.” “Who is he with?” I asked. “One of his business partners, Ms. Lillian,” I furrowed my brows. Lillian was a woman around my age and an upcoming CEO. I had met her a couple of times and our relationship was platonic, but I always noticed the way she looked at me. I never paid attention. Now that I thought about it, it was obvious she and my husband had something going on. Or maybe those mean glares and fake smiles she gave me were filled with jealousy. I shook my head at Richard. He could ignore his wife for weeks but show up to this party with another woman hanging on his arm. He definitely didn’t care or respect me. We kept walking and soon we got to the hall. I took in the setting: prominent CEOs and important figures scattered across the room, socializing and discussing business. Bodyguards stood at the corners of the room, eyes on their bosses. Servers walked around carrying drinks. There were chairs and tables with people conversing, and servers attending to guests. Slow music played in the background and the air smelled of rich, luxurious cologne. I had missed this life. I was made for this life. Everyone turned as I walked in and I could tell they were surprised. William led me to my table and I kept a small smile on my face. “Aria Smith,” a voice called just before I got to my table and I turned. “Mrs. Bells,” I said, smiling politely. “Oh dear, I didn’t expect to see you here,” she said, walking closer to me. I chuckled, accepting her hug. “How are you doing, Mrs. Bells?” I asked. She gave me a look like I was being silly. “How am I doing?” she asked. “How are YOU doing? The internet tried to convince us you had brain damage.” I laughed. Mrs. Bells is a woman in her late fifties. She is very kind and cares about people. She ran a charity program and helped new CEOs build their social network. Although she is very nice, she could also be cruel and nasty when someone stepped on her toes. “The internet is always up to something,” I laughed. She nodded. “But how are you doing now? I’ve been so worried about you,” she said, holding my hand. I smiled and gave her a reply. Mrs. Bells talked a lot and I knew this would take a while. After talking to her, other people approached me. They were all surprised I was here. After long minutes I was finally free, and I started toward my seat but stopped in my tracks when I spotted my dearest husband. In his arm was Lillian. I saw the cloudy look in his eyes. The look he gave me when he was raging internally. The one I hated seeing. The one that used to make me afraid. But this time, I wasn’t scared. I walked to him slowly, keeping eye contact. His eyes raked over my body and he looked even angrier. “Hello, my dearest husband,” I told him, smiling widely. He frowned. “What are you doing here?” he snapped. I ignored him, my eyes drifting to Lillian. She gave me one of those looks, eyes filled with jealousy. My eyes went to their intertwined arm and I felt anger burning in me. I looked back at Richard and he quickly let go of her arm. Lillian looked at him angrily and he didn’t spare her a glance. He grabbed my hand, pulling me to a secluded area, and I knew I was about to hear some manipulative words.Aria“How do you feel?” Wayne asked. It was late at night, and I had sent a message to Richard saying I would be staying with William, which he completely ignored. I suppose he was too busy with the celebration.“I guess I'm fine,” I whispered, taking the drink from his hands. He sat beside me, and we both stared up at the dark sky. I was sitting on the patio wearing his clothes, wrapped snugly in a blanket. It felt refreshing not to be in that penthouse or at my house, surrounded by people who hated me.“You’ve been sitting out here for a while,” he said, letting out a soft breath.“Just reflecting,” I mumbled. “I never thought a day like this would come.”“My mother never approved of Richard, my aunt was completely against him, and it took hell and an absurd amount of effort to convince them he was the right one for me. But… they were right,” I whispered, exhaling slowly.“I still wonder how he got them on his side, how he manipulated them so easily. I had the best relationship with
Aria“There, there, stop crying. A pretty girl like you shouldn’t be crying,” I told her, pulling away. She sniffled, and I wiped her tears, taking her face gently in my hands.“You know how much I love you, right?” I asked. She nodded, and I smiled. “I got you that car you’ve always wanted, and a house. All for you,” I told her.Her eyes widened in shock, a bright smile spreading across her face. “Really?”I nodded. “It’s your push gift. You are my baby sister, and I would do anything to make you happy. You know that.”Lily beamed, throwing her arms around me. “Thank you, Sister! I’m so happy!” she exclaimed, and I laughed quietly. She had always wanted that house and car, but I had kept telling her, not now. She had begged me so many times, but back then, I wasn't ready for her to leave the estate and live on her own. I was just trying to be a p
AriaThe car parked in front of my house and I came down, breathing out. Today was Lily’s baby shower and of course I had to make an appearance. I was in the hospital for two weeks and those were the longest weeks of my life. I was tired of seeing white walls, tired of the smell, and tired of lying vulnerable on that bed. Surprisingly, Richard stuck around. He made sure I was getting everything I needed and didn’t leave my side.I began to wonder if he didn’t care about his baby on the way. Lily would have wanted his attention, to be babied by him and to plan the gender reveal together. But for those two weeks, he never left my side; he slept on the couch, made sure I was eating, and followed up with the doctor. He acted like a doting husband, but I wasn’t moved. He only felt guilty because I had passed out beside him all night while he slept soundly. And it’s not like he genuinely cared—if I had died beside him, he wouldn’t have successfully gotten his hands on the company. After two
AriaThe slow sound of the machine beeping woke me up from my slumber. I slowly opened my eyes, and at first, everything looked blurry and bright. The only thing I saw was white walls, and I was confused. Was I dead? Was I in heaven? I blinked repeatedly, and the room became clear. I looked around and noticed I was in a ward. The door opened and Richard walked in.He ran to me once he noticed I was awake. “Aria,” he called, looking down at me worriedly. I opened my mouth to say something, but no words came out.“I will get the doctor,” he said, running outside. I lay on the bed without moving, and shortly after, he returned with help. Doctor James checked my vitals and spoke to me, but I was too weak to utter a word.“W-water,” I finally whispered, hoping he heard me. Richard looked around the room and quickly grabbed me a bottle of water. After drinking the water, I felt better.“How is she, Doctor?” he asked, looking at me worriedly.Doctor James sighed. “Her health is deteriorating
AriaHe walked towards me, still staggering, and I tried to keep my cool.“You look so tempting in purple,” he slurred, getting closer to me. He kissed all over my neck, and I felt irritated. He has been with my sister, been with Lillian, and so many other women that I am yet to know. How long has this been going on? How long has he been cheating? And then he comes back home, acting like an obsessed husband who wants his wife. I have been sharing him with other women that I don’t know about. And to think I thought I was special.I pushed him away like his touch burned me, and it was harder than I intended. I scratched my neck, feeling worms crawling on my skin. He staggered back, his eyes widening at my sudden movement.“I’m too tired, Richard,” I told him, holding myself back from snapping at him.He frowned. “But you’ve never refused me.”Tears almost welled up in my eyes. Yes, I’ve never refused you because I thought you were mine; I thought your body belonged to me just as mine di
Aria“What was that, Aria!” Richard yelled, coming inside the room. I got back to my penthouse a few hours ago and I didn’t expect Richard to barge in drunk.“Are you drunk?” I asked, already knowing the answer.“I’m not drunk, I am perfectly okay,” he slurred. “But you need to tell me what you were doing with Wayne. Why is he hovering around you knowing you are mine!”I sighed. Seems we were back at this. “It was a party, Richard. He only came to greet me and was relieved that I was safe.”Richard wasn’t convinced. “He doesn’t need to check on you. What business does he have with you? I am your husband, I’m the only person who should look at you!” He yelled.I sighed, rubbing my temples. For hours I’ve been checking the documents William sent to me. Exhaustion was slipping in but I refused to give in. I needed to know everything. I saw that my family all have separate secret accounts and small companies. That’s where they hide all the stolen funds so far. Richard and my mother have s
