MATEA'S POV

His words hung in the air "Wherever you're going... you don't have to go there alone"

and for the first time in hours, in days, in what felt like forever, I didn't feel invisible. I didn't feel small. I just... felt seen.

I wiped my cheek quickly, embarrassed that he was seeing me like this red-eyed, messy-haired, suitcase in hand, looking like my whole world had just crumbled. Which, honestly, it had.

"I'm... I'm fine" I said, though my voice was still thick with tears. "Thank you for catching me. I wasn't looking where I was going"

He didn't let go of my arms right away. His hands were large, warm, steady the complete opposite of everything I'd known lately. His dark eyes searched mine, gentle but unwavering, like he could see right through the lies I was telling myself.

"You're not fine" he said softly, but there was no judgment in it. No mockery. Just truth. "And that's okay. You don't have to be fine right now."

Something in his tone - the kindness, the quiet understanding broke whatever was left of my composure. My shoulders slumped, and the tears I'd been fighting spilled over again. I didn't even try to stop them.

"I don't know where I'm going" I admitted, my voice trembling. "I just know I can't stay there. Not anymore."

He nodded slowly, as if that made perfect sense. As if leaving everything you'd ever known with nothing but a suitcase and a broken heart was the bravest thing someone could do.

"Then let me help" he said simply. "My car is just around the corner. It's early, it's getting cold, and you look like you've been standing here long enough. Let me take you somewhere safe. Somewhere quiet. You don't have to tell me anything. You don't even have to talk. Just... let me help"

I should have said no. I should have walked away. A stranger offering help at dawn after a breakupthst was how bad things happened, wasn't it? But looking at him at the sincerity in his face, at the way he didn't push, didn't demand, didn't expect anything in return I found myself nodding. Because for the first time in a long time, I didn't want to be strong anymore. I just wanted someone to stand beside me while I figured out how to be strong again.

"Okay" I whispered. "Thank you..."

"Kael" he said, offering a small, genuine smile that reached all the way to his eyes. "My name is Kael"

The ride was quiet. Not the heavy, suffocating silence I'd grown used to the kind that felt like holding your breath waiting for a fight. This silence was soft. Gentle. He turned on soft music, low enough that it didn't demand attention, and rolled the window down just an inch so the morning air could circulate. He didn't ask questions. He didn't press me for details. He just... drove.

I watched the city pass by the streets waking up, lights turning off, people starting their days and wondered how everything could look so normal when my own life had just fallen apart.

"Where are we going?" I asked quietly after a while.

"To my place" Kael said, glancing over briefly"It's quiet. No one else is there. You can rest, wash up, have something to eat - and then we can figure out your next step. If you don't feel safe, or if you want to leave at any time, just say the word. I won't stop you"

It was dangerous. It was foolish. But looking at him steady, calm, honest I realized I trusted him. Not blindly, not completely... but enough. Enough to take one more step forward.

When we arrived, his home was nothing like what I expected. It was warm books everywhere, soft rugs, plants in the windows, sunlight spilling across wooden floors. It felt lived-in. It felt like a home, not just a house.

"Make yourself at home" he said, setting my suitcase down gently. "Bathroom is down the hall. There's fresh towels in the cabinet. I'll make coffee - or tea, if you prefer. And something to eat. You look like you haven't eaten in a while"

I opened my mouth to argue - to say I wasn't hungry, to say I should go - but my stomach growled before I could speak. Kael gave me a small, knowing smile.

"Tea, then," I said softly. "Please"

He nodded. "Tea it is. Take your time. No rush"

When I came out of the bathroom ace washed, hair combed, hands shaking less than before the smell of warm tea and toast filled the air Kael was sitting at the kitchen island, two mugs set out, steam curling gently upward. He looked up when I walked in, and his expression softened.

"Better?" he asked.

"Much" I said, sitting down across from him. "Thank you. For everything. I... I don't know how to repay you"

"You don't," he said firmly, pushing one mug toward me. "There's no debt here, Matea. No contract. No expectation. You needed help - someone who didn't yell at you, someone who didn't make you feel small - and I happened to be there. That's all"

My breath caught. He said my name. I didn't remember telling him my name.

"You know who I am?" I asked, confused.

He took a slow sip of tea before answering. "We've met before. Briefly. At the gallery opening last month. You were with... him. You were standing by the window, looking at the paintings, but you weren't really looking at them. You looked like you were somewhere else. Like you were waiting for something that wasn't coming"

I stared at him, stunned. That night - Jace had spent the whole time on his phone, ignoring me, making excuses to step away. I'd felt so alone. And someone had noticed. Someone I didn't even know had seen me.

"I remember you" Kael said quietly "Because you looked like you needed someone to ask if you were okay. And no one did. Not even him"

Tears pricked my eyes again - but this time, they weren't tears of pain. They were tears of relief. Of being seen. Of realizing that just because one person treated me like I was nothing, didn't mean I actually was.

"He told me I was exhausting," I whispered, the words spilling out before I could stop them. "That I was suffocating. That I was ordinary. And the worst part is... I started believing him."

Kael set his mug down gently. "Listen to me. Someone who makes you feel like you're too much - when you're just caring, just loving, just being you - that's not someone who deserves you. Exhausting to whom? To someone who doesn't know how to appreciate you? That's not your fault, Matea. That's his loss."

His voice was steady, sure - like he was telling me a fact, not an opinion. And for the first time in months, I believed it.

"He left," I said, my voice clearer now. "Told me to be gone when he got back. So I left. And I have nothing. No money saved, no place to go, no plan."

"Then we make a plan," Kael said simply. "One step at a time. You can stay here as long as you need. No strings. No deadlines. Until you're ready to stand on your own again."

"Why?" I asked, searching his face. "Why are you doing this? You don't owe me anything."

He looked at me for a long moment, his gaze warm and steady. "Because everyone deserves someone who doesn't make them fight for a place in their life. And because... I've wanted the chance to know you since that night at the gallery. Not the version of you that was shrinking yourself to fit someone else's life. But you. The real you."

My heart did something strange - it didn't ache. It didn't break. It fluttered, soft and careful, like a flower trying to bloom after a long winter.

"I don't know who I am anymore," I admitted honestly. "I've been 'his girlfriend' for so long... I forgot how to just be me."

"Then let's find her together," Kael said, reaching across the counter and covering my hand with his - warm, firm, safe. "We'll take it slow. No rush. No expectations. Just... you. And me. Figuring it out."

I looked at his hand over mine, then up at his face - at the kindness, the patience, the quiet strength - and realized something life-changing. I hadn't just run away from Jace that morning. I'd run toward something. Or rather... someone.

"Okay" I said, and for the first time in a long time, I smiled - a real, genuine smile that reached my eyes. "Let's figure it out"

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 4

MATEA’S POVThe days that followed felt like stepping into a life I’d only ever dreamed of. Soft morning sunlight, the smell of coffee brewing, Kael’s quiet laugh as he flipped through a book on the sofa — these small, ordinary moments felt more precious than any grand gesture I’d ever known. He didn’t just love me; he cherished me. He listened. He remembered the little thing how I took my tea, the songs I hummed when I was happy, the way I tucked my hair behind my ear when I was nervous. Every day, he showed me what it meant to be chosen, not just tolerated.I’d started applying for jobs, too. Kael encouraged me endlessly, never letting me doubt myself even when I felt unqualified. “You’re capable, Matea,” he’d say gently. “You’ve handled harder things than a job interview. You’ve survived a broken heart and kept going. That takes strength most people don’t have.”His belief in me slowly became my own. I practiced interviews in the evenings, and he’d sit across from me, nodding, aski

MATEA’S POVThe days that followed unfolded in a soft, quiet rhythm I hadn’t known existed. No yelling. No waiting up late wondering where someone was. No walking on eggshells, terrified that one wrong word would set off a storm. Just… peace. Kael’s home became my sanctuary — warm, gentle, and filled with a kind of quiet respect I’d never been given before. He never made me feel like a burden. Never asked when I was leaving. Never made me feel like I owed him anything. Instead, he’d leave a fresh cup of tea on the kitchen table beside me while I worked on my resume. He’d ask about my day really ask and listen like every word mattered. He’d notice when I was quiet, when my eyes looked distant, when Jace’s cruel words crept back into my mind, and he’d say something so simple yet so powerful it would ground me instantly.“You’re not ordinary, Matea. Don’t let anyone ever convince you that you are.”But old habits died hard. Some nights, I’d wake up gasping — remembering the way Jace look

MATEA’S POVThe air in our apartment felt heavy, suffocating thick with the silence we’d been avoiding for weeks. I stood by the window, my hands clasped tightly together, watching the streetlights flicker on one by one. Every second felt like an hour. Every breath felt like I was inhaling glass. He walked in, slamming the door behind him loud, angry, as if just being here was a burden he couldn’t carry anymore. He didn’t look at me. He didn’t even acknowledge that I was standing right there. He tossed his keys onto the table, ran a hand through his hair, and started unbuttoning his shirt like he couldn’t wait to get out of his own skin.“Where were you?” I asked, my voice quiet, trembling despite how hard I tried to steady it. “It’s two in the morning again, Jace. This is the fourth time this week”He stopped, his back still to me, and let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “Here we go again. Always the questions, Matea. Always the accusations. Can’t you ever just let me breathe?”“I’m not a
