“Let me help you" I pleaded, my hands gripping her tightly. "Fine. If you're so bent on solving my problems, you can marry me then" the lady snapped in frustration, forcing the engagement ring on my fingers. "Let's go get our marriage certificate then" I urged with a knowing smile. ....... Behind the spotlight, Luisa's life is a complexity of lies and scandals. Luisa's POV "You never listen to me" Christina yelled, her voice echoing off the water and her face etched with anger. "You always think you're right." I stood by the poolside, the dim light staring down at my skin as I stared at my beloved sister's angry face. "Aren't you going to say anything?" She continued, her tone harsh and unrestrained. "You're one of the most sought-after TV personalities and models in the entertainment industry. Tell me what's stopping you from helping me climb the ranks. I can move up easily with you as my sister." It seemed my silence tipped her off. A mix of guilt and regret surged through my body, but my decision was final. "I'm sorry, Christina, but if you want to make it in the entertainment industry, you'll have to work for it yourself; just like I did" I declared, taking a step towards her. "Let's not fight over this." I tried to reach out to her, but she swatted my hands away and took several steps backward. "You're lying, Luisa" She spat, her eyes blazing with anger. "I'm pretty sure you slept your way through. No one believes you don't have a backer. Everyone talks about how you mingle with those directors at the peak of the industry." "That's not true" I protested, feeling a pang of hurt and frustration. "You were there when I had to go without sleep for days to perfect my fluency and steps. Don't pretend like you know nothing about the sacrifices I made for the both of us." "Ugh... I'm done listening to your excuses. You can go to hell for all I care" Christina scoffed and turned away, she walked towards the pool edge and made to turn again, but something crazy happened - she lost her balance and fell into the pool. I watched in horror, my body frozen, as I watched my sister struggle to stay afloat. How stupid I was to have forgotten that she couldn't swim. I ran towards the pool and grabbed her hands. "Hold on, Christina. Don't let go." "I hate you!!" She cursed, and instantly, her fingers slipped and she fell deeper into the pool. "Nooooo!!!!" I screamed, my voice cracked with terror. But it was too late; Christina was gone forever. My eyes snapped open, my chest heaved as I gasped for air. I was drenched in cold sweat, and the bedsheets were wrapped around my legs. "No, not again" I growled in frustration. It was that terrible nightmare again. The death of my sister kept hunting me over and over again, every time I closed my eyes to sleep. It worsened to the extent that I had to find comfort in valium to cure my insomnia. I swung the sheets off my legs, jumped out of bed, and rushed to the switch on the wall. Switching on the light, I let out a deep sigh of relief. Yes, I was claustrophobic. How the lights got turned off, I couldn't explain. I buried my face in my palm, wondering why that terrible nightmare kept coming back despite the numerous therapy classes I had to attend. Suddenly, my phone buzzed. I rushed to grab it from my bedside table and opened the screen. "Shit!" I cursed, seeing the name of my manager displayed on it. "Get your butt down here right now" it read. Glancing at the table clock, I finally realized I was already late for work. I was getting an earful. Casting my problems aside, I freshened up hastily and chose my work outfit; a pair of blue jeans, a white turtle neck, and black boots. I chose a pair of sunglasses to match and went ahead to put on my makeup. What baffled me was how my dark circles kept getting detected, even after the makeup. "Hmm... Get yourself together, girl" I encouraged myself and stepped out of the room. Soon, I got to the garage where my car was parked and hit the road. I drove at a high speed, almost breaking the traffic rule. Thankfully, I got to my workstation without getting stopped by a cop or a road marshal. The Spotlight Desk. That was the exact name inscribed on the towering structure gazing down on me. With a deep sigh, I walked into the building and as usual, acted oblivious to everyone around me. "She's such a snub" I heard someone say. Yeah. I won't disagree with her. I was a total snub. I withdrew completely from the social circle when my sister died, and only communicated with people on work-related matters. I passed through the elevator and arrived in front of my manager's office. I knocked lightly and got the answer right on time. The door creaked open and I walked in. The middle-aged man was sitting behind his desk with his piercing gaze lingering on me. "Good morning, Mr. Torres" I greeted meekly, keeping my gaze to the ground. "What's good about the morning, Miss. Fernanda? You're late!" He snapped. "I want those glasses off." I took them off immediately to avoid another boring hour of his lecture on how arrogant I had become. "Another nightmare, huh?" He asked with a low voice. My dark circles ratted me out for the umpteenth time. Oh, I forgot to mention that Mr. Torres was the one who helped me hide my sister's death from the public. Why? Because the CCTV footage of the incident made it look like I had killed her myself. We both had our careers to protect, so we saw that as the best solution. "Yes," I muttered, my voice barely audible. "When last did you attend the therapy class I recommended for you?" He probed. "Three weeks ago" I replied guiltily. "It wasn't helping, so I stopped." Mr. Torres sighed. "It's alright. Well, I have a celebrity I wanted you to interview, but I think you'll have to sit this one out. Go home and rest, or you can go visit that fiancé of yours." My heart leaped for joy the moment I heard those last words. I decided to go see him instead of going straight home. "I can't believe you proposed to him yourself" Mr. Torres grumbled. "What tips me off the most is you spending your entire savings on that trip to the Maldives you traveled on last month? That money could have gotten you a villa in Lake View." "Well, it's love, Mr. Torres" I snorted, turning to leave. "You should find love too, and stop pestering those in relationships." "You!" He yelled, but I had already walked out of his office. Soon, I hit the road. My next stop was my fiancé's office.AdmirerAdrian's POV"I'm sorry but I want a divorce" Those words stung me so deeply. The urge to rip her into shreds was great.A divorce? We had been together for months. Wasn't the period enough for her to grow feelings for me?The thought of the answer being negative fueled my anger."I'd rather lock you up in a cell than let you leave" I yelled, letting it all out.Over my rotten corpse. She looked at me with fear in her widened eyes. Guilt rose in my heart but it was only for a moment."Your reasons are just an excuse. Try again" I added, snorting.A tear fell down her cheek. "I have the right to decide what I want for myself" She retorted, her voice trembling."But you can choose to go to jail" I shot back, struggling to remain calm. "You'd better listen to me."I couldn't dare to look into her bloodshot eyes, so I turned my back on her."Come downstairs for dinner after you're done freshening up" I ordered coldly. "Don't try to disobey me.”With that, I stormed out of the ro
A DivorceLuisa's POV"I thought I'd lost you" His soft voice rang endlessly in my ears as we exited the building.I couldn't respond. Not because I wasn't as worried as he was but because I didn't know what to say.The warmth emanating from his arms gave me goosebumps. The feeling in my chest was scary."Let's go home" He whispered into my ear.It was then that I realized we had gotten to the car."What about Valerie?" I blurted out, hoping to meet his gaze.It held something dark. Something I couldn't phantom. He was unresponsive for a moment."She's right where she belongs," he finally replied, his smile dripping with malicious intent. Forget about her. You won't be seeing her again."I shivered at the sound of that, but he didn't seem open to more questions.I kept shut and followed his lead.We got into the car, sitting in the backseat. Javier sat behind the wheel. The ride was eerily silent. I guessed everyone was engrossed in their thoughts.Who would have thought the party wou
Chapter 116: JealousyGeorge's POV"There's nothing here" Javier let out a deep scowl. "Are you playing with us right now?"I felt insulted. I wasn't going to let it slide."Ugh.. says who couldn't find his way out of a woman's grasp" I scoffed.Javier smirked, his eyes narrowed. "At least, I didn't try to sweet-talk her.""You....""They were here" Adrian cut me off, his cold voice commanding silence."Look at the bloodstains" He added, and my eyes followed his.My gaze fell on the trails of blood leading to a corner that led to God knows where."Tch.. that tech guy of yours is quite dumb. What if the enemies were after them?" I snarled, indirectly speaking to Adrian. It was quite rare to get the chance to throw shades at him.He didn't even spare me a glance."Let's follow it" He ordered, and led the way.*Tch.. very soon*I snorted inwardly, throwing daggers from behind. The trail of blood led us to a narrow pathway.I badly wanted to set my eyes on Luisa. She was the one I was afte
A Life SavedLuisa's POV"He has lost a lot of blood" I cried, my bloodshot eyes fixed on the unconscious man lying in my arms."He's pale and cold" I added.James gritted his teeth, his face etched with frustration, and his fist clenched in rage."I can see that clearly," he snarled. It wouldn't make any difference if we all got blown up together with this building.""What?!" I exclaimed in shock, my eyes filled with disbelief.James shrugged. "We won't survive if the Big Boss and the Second Young Master fail. Their failure means our death. We would die with him."Fear gripped my body.Death?Oh, no way!I wasn't ready to die. Not when I had debts to settle."Isn't there a way we can treat him?" I questioned, ignoring the disgust on his face. "We need to stop him from losing more blood."James clicked his tongue, his eyes scanning the area."There should be but just know that if we get caught by Valerie's men again, she's going to end our lives" James declared bluntly. He must have f
Shot deadAdrian's POV"Tch... You won't understand because you have never loved anyone in your life" I fired, frowning.I was sure my words had hit a soft spot, but I could apologize later.I got to the table and picked up the papers. I grabbed a pen as I scanned the paper. One thing was certain - signing the papers was like signing a death wish. The moment I tried to sign the paper, a familiar voice echoed."Why sign away our family's fortune when you could sign it over to me?" The voice snarled and my hands froze in mid-air.I recognized that voice."Huh...what are you doing here?" I heard Javier ask."I don't think I owe you an explanation. It's a public place after all" The intruder replied.I slowly tilted my head, my gaze falling on the man standing by the door.I wished I could wipe the stupid smirk off his face, but there were other things to worry about."Why are you here, George?" I asked coldly, watching his every move.He smirked. "It's good to see you like this. Instead
Chapter 113: HelpGeorge's POV"Melinda, can you stay right here and wait for me? I'll be back before you know it" I assured the purple masked lady standing right beside me, smiling sheepishly.I scoffed inwardly, while maintaining a perfunctory smile. After trying so much to make her understand that she was just an escort, she still felt she was someone of importance to me.Well, no one should blame me just in case she cries because of a broken heart.Unfortunately, I didn't like plump ladies. Her lack of height also contributed to the problem. Her blue eyes were attractive, but I only saw her as a cute baby. She fiddled with strands of her blonde hair as she stared at me seductively.I sighed deeply, wondering how I ended up choosing her instead of hiring a real escort. Probably because she was my assistant and someone I could trust to have my back at the masquerade ball. The main purpose of my attendance was to keep an eye on Luisa and Adrian. The fact that my dear brother chose he
