“Congratulations! You’re pregnant. And you’re having twins,” Dr. Gia said with a big smile.
“T-twins?” I asked in surprise, without blinking.
“Yes, twins. You’re already five weeks along.”
Seeing the image of my twins on the ultrasound screen and hearing Dr. Gia’s congratulations made my heart leap with joy and anxiety at the same time.
“Here’s the ultrasound image. You can show this to your husband since he didn’t come with you. I hope for the next checkup, you can come together,” Dr. Gia said as she handed me the ultrasound report.
“Thank you,” I replied as I took the report from her hand.
I stared blankly at the photo for a moment, lost in thought while caressing the image of the twin babies who would be born from my womb eight months later. I never imagined there would be two lives inside me. And those two lives are my babies with Ethan Hill, the man I love so deeply.
Pregnancy news should be a joyful announcement for Ethan and me. But from the very first day of our marriage, Ethan had firmly stated that he didn’t want to have children with me. In fact, he bought birth control pills for me to take every time we were about to have sex.
Because of my carelessness, there was a time when I forgot to take the pill, and as a result, I became pregnant without his permission. However, no matter what, I must tell him about this pregnancy.
After thanking Dr. Gia, I hurried home. On the way, I sent a message to Ethan and asked him to come home early so we could have dinner together and I was going to tell him about this pregnancy news.
Honestly, just imagining his reaction made my heart race. If only he had been hoping for this pregnancy too, things might be very different. However, our marriage was never based on love from the start. So, having a child with me was never in Ethan’s goals.
When I got home, I immediately got busy in the kitchen until dinner was finally ready to be served. A few minutes before dinner, Ethan came home. I greeted him with a warm hug, and he returned it with a brief kiss on my cheek.
Midway through the dinner, it was the perfect time for me to talk to him. But doubt and fear crept into my heart. I was afraid he wouldn’t be able to accept the news of this pregnancy. However, I couldn’t possibly hide it from him forever.
I steeled my resolve and gathered my courage. But before my lips could say a single word, his phone flashed, signaling an incoming message. My eyes inadvertently caught the sender’s name, which looked familiar.
Julia Hudson, my stepsister, had sent a message to my husband.
Curiosity surged through me. Questions swirled in my mind.
Instead of reading the message, Ethan placed his handkerchief over his phone so I couldn’t see anything.
Curious, I asked him. “Why aren’t you replying to the message?”
“Later. It’s not important. What did you want to tell me?” he asked flatly.
I shook my head with a small smile. “Never mind.”
“Okay,” he replied briefly.
After dinner, while Ethan was in the shower, I took his phone and opened the inbox. Then, I saw a long string of messages from Julia instantly. My heart was pounding, and my palms sweat coldly as my index finger approached the first message Julia had sent a few moments ago.
When that message opened, my heart ached as if sliced by a knife, and my soul seemed to float out of my body.
Julia was sending flirty messages to my husband!
With trembling hands, I opened the messages one by one and read every word. Without realizing it, my vision blurred instantly, and clear liquid streamed from the corners of my eyes, soaking my face in the blink of an eye.
Besides the flirty messages, Julia also sent nude photos of herself to Ethan frequently.
My world turned upside down. The pain of betrayal spread throughout my body, making my chest feel tight and my breathing heavy.
Julia has taken everything from me, and she wants to take Ethan away from me. I can’t let her. Ever since I was little, she’s stolen my father’s love from me and taken away the perfect life I once had.
Julia Hudson is my stepsister. A year after my mother died, my father introduced me to Julia and her mother. Since then, my life has never been the same.
My father’s attitude, which had always been warm toward me, changed. In fact, it gradually grew cold. I felt like they never even acknowledged my presence among them. I always trailed behind them whenever we attended a party. Julia was always the star, and I was just her shadow.
Before Ethan came out of the bathroom, I put his phone back on the nightstand. Then, I hurried to clean up my face so it wouldn’t look puffy and sat on the bed, pretending to read a book.
A moment later, Ethan came out of the bathroom, and a few minutes after that, his phone rang. Upon seeing the caller’s name, he opened the balcony door, stepped out of the room, and shut the balcony door tightly.
Curious, I stood up and eavesdropped. Luckily, Ethan’s back was turned toward me. At that moment, I faintly heard Ethan say.
You don’t need to worry about Jenny. I’ll be there right away. Love you. Bye.
As if the flirty messages and nude photos weren’t enough. She was asking Ethan to see her on a night when the rain was pouring heavily and thunder was clapping loudly. Julia had successfully torn my heart into pieces.
Before Ethan went back into the room, I hurried back to sit on the bed and pretending to read a book. A moment later, Ethan entered the room, changed his clothes, put on a jacket, and then grabbed the car keys.
Before he left, I approached him while holding his hands. “Where are you going? It will be dangerous if you go out in the weather like this. Please don’t go.”
Jennifer Hudson“Jenny, is that really you?” Aunt Elena asked, her eyes brimming with tears.I nodded several times as I kissed the back of her hand and wiped her wet eyes.“Yes, it’s me. I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were sick. I should have looked for you a long time ago. But I was so caught up in my life that I forgot about you, and you had to suffer all alone. From now on, I’ll look after you. You’ll never be alone again.”Aunt Elena’s sobs grew louder. Then, she gently pulled me closer to her and hugged me. I could feel her frail body trembling. Her tears even soaked through my clothes.“You don’t need to apologize. I should have taken you with me over a decade ago, so you wouldn’t have had to suffer. Forgive me,” she said.“Don’t apologize. I know the difficulties you faced. Especially since Dad wouldn’t let you take me. It’s okay. Now I’m here, and we’ll always be together.” I let Aunt Elena cry her heart out in my embrace until she was satisfied. We had been separated for over
Jennifer HudsonThe drive from Berlint University to Aunt Elena’s house took about forty minutes. Her house was quite far from downtown. As far as I recall, she enjoyed the peaceful surroundings of her home, far from the hustle and bustle, which allowed her to concentrate while working or playing music.Besides being a history professor, Aunt Elena was also a talented pianist. I remember very little about her.A few moments later, my car stopped right in front of a large, towering gate. The area around her house was silent, as was the spacious front porch. Dry leaves covered nearly half of the front porch, giving it a neglected appearance.I got out of the car and rang the bell twice. Five minutes passed, and no one came out to open the gate. Ten minutes passed, and the same thing happened. Fifteen minutes passed, and no one came out to open the gate. There was no guard on duty at the gate. Finally, I opened the gate myself. Fortunately, the gate wasn’t locked, so I could enter easily
Jennifer HudsonBy the time I finished moving all my belongings from the car into the apartment, it was already dark outside. The full moon had taken the sun’s place, and its light shone beautifully in the night sky, accompanied by a scattering of stars.Sweat drenched my face and the rest of my body. I was panting after working hard to move so many things. I rested for a moment by sitting at the window. Before sitting down, I grabbed a cup of coffee and two slices of cake that Ethan and Deborah had given me. Then, I put the leftover food in the fridge to eat over the next few days. The moment the food and drink touched my lips, the taste was incredible. It was truly delightful, especially with the city’s view filled with twinkling lights and the beautiful night sky. Yet, amidst all that beauty, I felt a deep sense of loneliness.I had never lived in a house or apartment by myself before. So, that night, the loneliness felt so intense and quite agonizing. Still, moving to Rainwood and
Jennifer HudsonClaire couldn’t stop crying, while Billy stood beside her, hugging and comforting her. Then, it was Ethan’s turn to say goodbye to me. We felt awkward suddenly, like two teenagers who were still shy when passing by someone of the opposite sex they liked.Ethan approached and hugged me tightly. Instantly, warmth spread throughout my body. Although my feelings of love for him had faded and diminished, the remnants of those feelings were still there, leaving a lasting mark.We hugged for quite a while until Billy’s coughing a few times snapped us out of it and made us let go of the hug as quickly as possible.“Alright, it’s time for me to go,” I said, feeling awkward.“W-wait a minute. I have something for you,” Ethan said. Then, he ran inside the house.“It looks like it’s going to rain hard today,” Claire remarked.“Why?” Billy asked, looking at Claire in surprise.“Because Jenny left us.”“Hey, come on. I’ll come visit you, or you can come visit Rainwood. My arms are al
