Vireya's POV

The first light of dawn stretched softly across the sky, painting it in pale hues of gold and lavender. I stirred from sleep. But when I reached out, the space beside me was empty.

Zevarion was already up.

I stepped outside the tent, and there he stood, bathed in the early glow of morning. His eyes met mine with a warmth that settled the nerves fluttering quietly in my chest.

He didn’t say much, he didn’t need to. His presence, steady and quiet, said everything. He hugged me tightly, and walked me back through the woods, his hand brushing mine every few steps, as if reluctant to let go. The silence between us was gentle. Sacred.

When the castle gates came into view, we paused. He touched my cheek, the pad of his thumb tracing the edge of my jaw. For a moment, the world held its breath.

“I’ll wait for you,” he said.

And I nodded, trying not to let the emotion in my throat rise too high. “I’ll come back to you.”

I slipped into the castle before the morning bustle began, th

Vireya’s POV I burst through the castle doors and sprinted toward the holding yard, my heart pounding louder than my footsteps. The air outside was heavy with the stench of blood, sweat, and iron, of chains too tight and hope too thin. There they were, new prisoners lined up like cattle, wrists bound, their faces hollow with exhaustion and fear. Xareth stood among them, arms crossed, overseeing it all like a vulture admiring his kill.“Kavira? Kavira!” I called out desperately, my voice cracking with panic.Xareth turned, brows furrowing in confusion. “What is it now?” he asked, clearly annoyed.“Is there a girl named Kavira here?” I asked, louder this time, scanning the sea of faces for hers.No one answered. I moved forward, weaving through the prisoners until I knelt before one young woman with blood on her cheek and dust in her hair. Her eyes met mine trembling.“Please,” I whispered. “The Beta of Drifthollow… what happened? Where is his daughter, Kavira?”Tears welled in her ey

Vireya’s POV “Can I ask you something?” I asked her.“Of course. Anything,” she said gently.“How did Xareth become the Alpha?” I ventured, watching her face closely. At the mention of his name, she flinched, visibly. Her hand trembled slightly as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.“Don't mention his name,” she whispered, her voice cracking like dry leaves underfoot.“Has he always been the Alpha? And those council members, I’ve never even seen them hold a proper meeting. How does this even work?” I pressed. She drew in a long, shaky breath, her gaze drifting toward the horizon as though the memory itself was a weight pressing on her chest.“He came here about five years ago, right after I gave birth to my little girl,” she murmured, her voice laced with sorrow. “I won’t ever forget that night.”“He destroyed everything,” she continued. “Those who sided with him, they were rewarded. Made into council members. They take what they want, land, resources, even people, and

Vireya's POV I stared at her, confusion tightening my brow. “I don’t get it. Zevarion isn’t here. So what exactly are you saying?”“I know he isn’t here,” she replied, her tone clipped, eyes glittering with sharp intent. “But he’ll return. He always does. Say it now, reject him, and when he comes back, he’ll be mine.”I opened my mouth to question the logic, how could spoken words bind a fate like that? But then I stopped myself. She was a demon. I didn’t need to understand how. I just knew I wasn’t going to do it. With a heavy sigh, I pushed myself up and stood.“Trust me,” she called as I turned away. “You’ll find out there’s no other way to rid yourself of that necklace. It will keep draining you, piece by piece, until you lose your soul.”I didn’t respond. I just walked, but she wasn’t done.“I could give you everything and more,” she said, her voice silk over steel. “But reject my offer, and all that waits for you is suffering.”I didn’t flinch or look back. I left her chambers

  • The Black Wolf    Chapter 61: When Desperation Knocks

Vireya's POV After Xareth left, I didn’t move much. My body had reached its limit, drained, sore, and hollowed out. Rest wasn’t a choice; it was a necessity. I needed time to rebuild the strength that had bled out of me, piece by fragile piece. For three days, all I did was sleep and eat. That was it. The simplest acts, chewing, swallowing, drifting back into dreams, became my sanctuary. And strangely, it worked. Slowly, the weight behind my eyes lifted. The deathly pallor on my face began to soften with warmth. I could breathe a little easier, sit up without feeling like my bones would crumble, life was returning. On the fourth day, after a quiet breakfast, I slipped into fresh clothes and decided it was time. I needed to find the Living Book.A few days ago, the idea of climbing the stairs would’ve felt like scaling a mountain. But now, though my legs still trembled slightly, I moved with a surprising ease.I reached the third floor and paused. A flicker of thought crossed my mind

Vireya's POV Siora returned moments later, carrying a tray of warm food, but when she saw me, curled into myself, tears silently streaming down my cheeks, she dropped it without hesitation.“Oh, Vireya…” she breathed, rushing to my side. She sat beside me, her arms wrapping around me without a second thought. I clung to her, sobbing silently into her shoulder. She didn’t ask questions, or didn’t try to stop me. She just held me, steady and quiet, her warmth a balm to the cold storm inside me.Her embrace reminded me that I was still still alive. That someone still cared.Eventually, my breathing slowed. I pulled back, wiping my face with trembling fingers, to my surprise, Siora’s cheeks were wet too.She smiled softly through her tears and reached for my hand.“I believe we’ll be fine,” she said gently. “Everything will be alright. And if it’s not…” her voice trembled, “then it’s not the end.”A shaky breath escaped my lips. “I hope so,” I whispered. Gods, I hope so.When the tears h

Vireya's POV It happened faster than the blink of an eye, one moment, I was in Zevarion’s arms, sobbing into his chest. The next, everything vanished into suffocating darkness.A voice cut through the void, smooth, mocking, unmistakable.“Welcome, my princess,” Xareth drawled, each word laced with sarcasm. My eyes snapped open, and a sharp gasp escaped my lips. I was standing in his chambers. The walls loomed high around me, draped in shadows and blood-red silk. Xareth stood before me, lips curled in amusement. My legs trembled as I staggered backward, panic clawing at my chest.“No… no, no…” I spun around, desperate to flee.“Stop.”The command cracked like a whip, and my body froze mid-step. I tried to scream, to run, to resist, but I was a puppet to his voice.“Come here,” he said calmly.Against my will, my feet moved. Each step toward him felt like walking into a grave. I stopped just inches away, the scent of pine and iron coiling around me.He rose from his seat with that twis
