Chapter 3 Miscarriage

Author: Adrian Kingsley
Zachary wasn't loud, but his voice was imperious. I kept my fingers clenched on the pull handle. "They're my personal belongings. We've signed a contract, Zachary."

Zachary sneered. "Getting too much into the broke, divorced wife character that you're stealing sewing supplies?" He tilted his head, and a pair of bodyguards shoved me away unceremoniously.

My suitcase was snatched from me and placed on the glass-covered steps. A bodyguard pried open the suitcase's lock with his metal bar, and the zip was yanked down. My top-secret sketch slipped out and scattered everywhere.

Rebirth, the half-finished gown that I was going to complete for the international contest in Lutecia, rolled out of the suitcase as well.

Its pure-white silk billowed in the air, and the embroidery on the lining gleamed like shimmering lines.

A black van came to a stop at the roadside. A group of servants carefully helped Wendy out of the car. She deliberately swayed her hips as she approached Zachary and held his arm.

"I couldn't find my iPad. Maybe I left it in the shop." Then, her eyes fell upon Rebirth, and they lit up. Wendy let go of Zachary and trotted over to Rebirth only to kick its hem.

"Oh, this one's much better than what I've tried on, Zack. And it's looser on the waist. I can show off my baby bump in this."

Zachary didn't even miss a beat as he bent over and picked up the very work that symbolized my rebirth. He dusted it off and draped it over Wendy.

Wendy had a larger build than I did. Rebirth was designed according to my build, and it was half-finished. Fitting Wendy was out of the question. Zachary tried to pull it down, but the fabric went taut and threatened to rip. He frowned with scorn.

"What an unsophisticated dress. It can't even fit over your belly." He gripped the hem of Rebirth and pulled it to the sides as hard as he could.

The cries of Rebirth as it was torn apart stabbed my ears. The silk hem of Rebirth, the thing I'd sewn completely by hand, was torn into two.

The moment it was torn, Zachary's hands froze. His eyes fell on the letters embroidered on the inside of the collar. They were stamped with my initials, NS.

Wendy said cutely, "You ruined it. Can't use it for anything other than padding now."

Zachary shot her an icy look and threw the torn gown onto the ground. "You deserve better than this cheap fabric."

I stared at the destroyed dress, my mind was filled with nothing but white noise. That was the very thing I was submitting for the competition. He promised he would wear the crown of champion on my head himself.

And now the work I'd spent so much effort on was trampled like it was worthless. I pounced at the top-secret sketches like a woman possessed. I had to protect them. I had to.

Alas, he grabbed my shoulder and flung me away like I was just some ragdoll, just as my fingers had managed to touch the edges of my sketches. "What is wrong with you?"

My limbs flailed wildly as I lost my balance, falling backward. My back fell to the ground, while my belly smashed into the corner of the cracked coffee table.

A wave of pain tore through me from my lower belly. I crashed into the pile of glass, sucking in air as much as I could.

Warm blood was trickling down between my legs and drenched the hem of my light-colored dress red. It spread across the white tiles like a pool.

The mockery on Zachary's face froze right then and there. His eyes couldn't look away from the crimson liquid pooling underneath my feet.

Zachary was rushed to the city center's hospital, and the sign over the ER's entrance shone red.The attending physician came out with a critical condition notice. He looked at me solemnly. "His organs are shutting down, and the toxin is spreading through his body. He is running on willpower just to see you one last time."I pushed the ICU's door open. The air was filled with the metallic rank of blood. All kinds of tubes were connected to Zachary's body while a ventilator covered the lower part of his face. The sound of my footsteps lit up something bright in his eyes, granting him a brief moment of lucidity before death. He held up a trembling hand that was covered in needle marks as he stubbornly presented me with the bloodstained kerchief.Tears slid down his gaunt cheeks and seeped into the white pillow.I didn't take the kerchief. Instead, I walked up to his bed and leaned over him. I delivered my final judgment upon him in the coldest and most apathetic voice I had in me,

We were holding a celebration at Selis' riverbank, where an al fresco plaza stood. I'd just stepped off the stairs and was about to cross the road, but a truck lost control and screeched down the corner.Everything that was tying the truss down snapped in a groan of agony, and the heavy metal fell toward me.At the same time, the armed killer leaped out of the shadows and aimed his weapon straight at my heart. When death seemed all but imminent, another silhouette lunged from my side like a beast that'd gone mad.Zachary shoved me onto the safety island and took the killer's lethal stab with his back. The poison knife buried itself deep in his back, and the heavy truss crashed right into Zachary's legs. One of the sharper, broken ones even pierced right through his stomach, and blood spurted out of his body like a fountain. The metal pinned him firmly against the cold road. Now, he looked just like the me in the past, except the graveyard of my past was littered with glass, not m

Although the show was over, the backstage passage was packed with reporters and interested buyers. So, I languidly lounged on my seat before the vanity and asked my assistant to take off my earrings.Just then, I heard a click as someone gently pushed the door open. Zachary staggered into the room. His hands, once flawless and used only to sign titanic deals, were marred by hideous scars. They were trembling and holding two thick stacks of papers. One was a share transfer. He would give me all his company's shares unconditionally. The other was the deed of the bridal shop he'd ruined. Zachary approached me and immediately went down on his knees."Nat…" His voice was raspy, like an old witch's nails scratching a blackboard. "You can have my head if that's what you want."I spun in my chair and watched him like a god would watch a lowly mortal. I smiled, extended my hand, and accepted those valuable papers. Then, I handed them to my assistant."The dog I've left at Lutecia's outskir

I left chaos in my wake, my blood thrumming with triumph. However, I felt strangely empty and apathetic as I gazed beyond the window, watching the city disappear from view.Their unfortunate ends trickled to me. Apparently, Zachary yanked off his IV drip as soon as he woke up at the hospital. His vengeance was swift and brutal as he tapped into all his connections and shoved Wendy into the shadiest nightclub in Imperia. He made it a point that Wendy would be serving guests in that humiliating dress forever. Still, not even that vindictive satisfaction could soothe the fear that'd taken root in his heart. He drove through the night and charged right into the locked-down ruins of my bridal shop. Although the entrance was cordoned off, he slammed his vehicle jack against the shutter again and again. Eventually, it opened. What lay before his eyes was a ground covered in browned, dried blood. He fell to his knees and dug through the ground of glass. He paid no heed to his injuries, unc

All lights were on the hall's center stage. Wendy was wearing Rebirth, the stolen gown which Lawson Group's top tailor made overnight. All eyes were on her, as if she were the star of the show. She was on cloud nine, so she couldn't resist grabbing her mic and flaunting, "This dress popped into my head, born from the love Zack and I share. Though trapped in a cocoon at first, it eventually emerged as something beautifu—"Sounds of my heels cut her short. I calmly walked up to the control station and pulled out the audio mixer's main plug. Every sound came to a grinding halt. The background music, Wendy's voice, everything. All eyes were on me now.Zachary's gaze screamed bloodlust, but I ignored him. Instead, I connected my spare phone to the hall's big screen. It showed an original design draft that was stamped by Lutecia's international competition panel of judges. The record stretched to a month ago, and my name was credited as the artist. Then, I told the control station's st

Zachary strode through the throng. He snatched my passport and flight ticket, clutching them tightly as if he didn't want to give me my freedom. Unfortunately for me, he truly didn't. His eyes were bloodshot, and his chest heaved with effort. He looked every bit like a feral beast ready to lunge."I told you, I would take you home once the baby is here. I'll break your legs if you leave Imperia before then!" He shoved me into his car and slammed the gas pedal. We stopped at the hillside villa he owned, and I was pushed into the third floor's main bedroom. The door was locked from the outside, and the communication signal within the estate was cut off. Every single servant was his eyes and ears.He thought of locking me up, of keeping me away from the outside world. He likely wanted time to do its thing, thinking time would heal all wounds.I didn't go on a hunger strike or ram myself against the door. Instead, I sat before the floor-to-ceiling window every day and set up a canvas
