Murmurs rippled through the whole room. My father’s jaw clenched, but he stayed silent, he looked at me, and I wondered why he didn’t tell me this beforehand.

Al at once, everyone’s eye landed on me. Like they were waiting for me to create a fit or something. And that ticked me off.

I slammed my hand lightly against the table, my voice cutting through the noise. “If they’re after me, then I’ll leave. Without me here, they won’t attack. Everyone will be—”

I turned sharply, gritting my teeth. “Excuse me?”

He leaned back slightly, his elbows resting on the table as he placed his chin on his hand.

“And where will you go? Do you think this pack will survive without an Alpha? Without one, a pack is as good as nothing. You’d leave them defenseless. Are you ready to see them perish just because you ran away from freight?”
