Chapter 98 – What I Shouldn’t Have Seen

Ryder’s POV

By the end of the week, something in Ollie’s eyes had changed. It wasn’t just the usual tiredness or the way he hid behind those quiet smiles. It was something sharper, heavier, like a secret pressing too close to the surface.

I told myself to let it go. To give him space. But every time he flinched at a sudden sound, or every time his sleeve slipped and I thought I saw another faint mark, the thought crept back, something was wrong.

I’d tried to ignore it. But ignoring it didn’t stop the unease growing inside me.

At first, I started noticing patterns. The way he’d leave school quickly, never answering texts after a certain hour. The way he avoided certain conversations, especially when people mentioned home or parents. I’d heard whispers before, students talking in half-truths and pity. I used to brush them off, but now they stuck.

On Monday, I overheard two guys near the lockers.

Chapter 102 – Fragile Walls(Ollie’s POV)When I woke up, everything felt wrong. The air smelled clean, not like the damp, stale scent of my apartment. The sheets beneath me were soft, too soft, and sunlight poured through curtains that weren’t mine. For a moment, I thought I was dreaming again, caught in one of those strange, foggy moments where everything feels safe before it falls apart. Then I heard it … footsteps.I sat up too quickly, my head spinning, and the room swayed around me. My throat was dry, my skin hot, but beneath the fever haze, recognition hit me. The posters on the wall, the guitar propped in the corner, the faint scent of soap and pine, Ryder’s room.My chest tightened. The door creaked open and there he was, holding a tray. He froze when our eyes met.“You’re awake,” he said quietly, almost like he didn’t want to scare me.“What…” My voice came out rough, broken. “What am I doing here?”He walked in slowly, setting the tray on the desk. “You were sick. I couldn’

Chapter 101 – Lines We Can’t CrossRyder’s POVI couldn’t get the image of Ollie’s face out of my head, the way his eyes looked empty that day, how his voice trembled when he told me to leave him alone. I’d tried to give him space, really tried, but something in me refused to sit still. The silence between us had stretched for days, and every hour felt wrong. I told myself I was just worried, that I only wanted to make sure he was safe, but deep down, I knew it was more than that.I started asking around quietly, hoping someone might know where he’d gone. Most people shrugged, others made jokes about him skipping school again, but then one of the guys from class mentioned seeing him near the old apartments at the edge of town. “He looked sick, man,” he said. “Like, pale. Barely standing.”That was all I needed to hear.By the time I reached the building, the sun had already dipped low, leaving everything washed in gray. The place looked abandoned, peeling paint, cracked windows, the f

Chapter 99 – The Breaking PointOllie’s POVThe days after the argument blur together like a bad dream. I stop answering messages, ignore every knock on my door, and let the world shrink down to the size of my bedroom. The curtains stay drawn, the air heavy with silence. My phone buzzes sometimes, Ryder’s name flashes across the screen, but I can’t bring myself to read what he sends. Every vibration feels like a reminder of what I said to him, the look on his face when I accused him of pitying me.I didn’t mean it. Not exactly. But the words came out sharp and ugly because it was easier to lash out than admit how scared I was. Scared that he’d see me for what I really am, broken, messy, a walking bruise inside and out.By the third day, my mom barely notices I haven’t gone to school. She’s too busy sleeping off another hangover, the house reeking of cheap perfume and cigarettes. I try to eat, but even the thought of food makes my stomach twist. My ribs ache when I breathe, a dull remi

Chapter 98– Almost NormalOllie’s POVThe next day came too soon. I barely slept, and when I did, I dreamed of shadows pressing against walls that wouldn’t move. I woke with the same heavy feeling sitting in my chest, the same thought looping in my mind, what did he see?I wanted to pretend nothing happened, that Ryder never found me behind the gym, never sat beside me in silence like he understood. But pretending got harder with him around. Every time our eyes met, it felt like he could read thoughts I hadn’t spoken yet. When I reached school that morning, he was already waiting by the lockers. His back was against the wall, arms folded, that unreadable expression on his face. He didn’t say anything at first, and neither did I. The hallway noise filled the space between us. Then, finally, he spoke.“You okay?”The same question again. I hated how it made me pause. I hated even more how it made me want to answer honestly.“I’m fine,” I said, forcing a small smile. “You don’t have to k

Chapter 97 – The Quiet Between UsOllie’s POVThe next morning felt heavier than most. My head pounded from lack of sleep, and my chest carried that familiar tightness that never really left. Every time I thought I could finally breathe, something new came along to remind me that peace wasn’t made for people like me.I tried to ignore the whispers that floated around the hallways, the curious glances that followed me whenever Ryder’s name came up. People were still talking about what happened the day before, how he’d snapped at those guys in class for making fun of me. It wasn’t just the outburst that shocked them. It was the fact that he had done it. Ryder, who barely looked at anyone twice, who didn’t care about school drama, had stood up for me.And now, every time I caught his eyes across the room, I saw something that made my stomach twist. It wasn’t pity. It wasn’t anger. It was… concern. That made it worse.I didn’t want him to care. I didn’t want anyone to care. Because caring
