Chapter 23

Clara

We stopped in a reasonable sized town with a collection of short streets filled with shops, some that had been completely trashed, others not so much. I dropped from the trunk wincing as my stiff legs hit the pavement. I was tired but overly alert as I glanced around. There had been a few dead on the outskirts of the town but no movement in the street, I just couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched and that had me feeling really nervous.

“You okay?” Porter asked when I didn't move from my spot but continued to scan store windows.

“Yeah, just a bad feeling.”

“Well don't discount it, gut instinct has saved my ass more than I care to admit.” He stated back before following the guys. I brought up the rear, heading into a clothing store that was well lit by the early evening sunlight.

I walked the perimeter of the store, glancing in alcoves, my hand rest
