Hi, thank you for picking my book. Please, note that this story is not about the mate abusing the other. It is a grumpy meets sunshine dynamic and I hope you like it. Please, support me if you like the story.

~SURI~

The pack house is busy this morning as everyone runs about for Emily’s birthday. I hurry toward the main building of the pack house to answer Luna Amelia’s summons. My whole body still aches from all the chores I have been doing since yesterday for Emily’s big birthday. All I want is to go to the river, swim, and have a long sleep.

Once in the Alpha quarters, I knock on Emily’s door before nudging it open. Luna Amelia stands there with her fists on her waist, glaring at me as I enter. My heart skips when I see Emily’s face wet with tears, her dress—the one I just brought from the laundry this morning—lying right beside her on the bed.

“Luna, you sent for me,” I say calmly.

Luna Amelia walks up to me and gives me a dirty slap without saying a word. My cheek stings and tears well in my eyes. I clutch my cheek, staring at her in confusion.

“You ruined Em’s dress?” she hisses.

My eyes dart to the dress on the bed, and at the weeping Emily, still in confusion. “No, I didn’t,” I say, forcing my voice to remain steady, not to show them any weakness.

She slaps me again and again before I can react.

“What do you mean you don’t know? It is you who brought her dress from the laundry!” she yells and grabs a handful of my hair. “Admit it!” She shoves my head ruthlessly, and I whimper in pain. “Admit that you are jealous of her! Admit that you did this because you didn’t get an elaborate birthday like hers and that you are worthless and weak!”

My anger begins to well, but I know better than to fight back. I have long learned to restrain myself; the Alpha, my father, will punish me if I touch or fight his Luna or his beloved daughter.

“I didn’t do it,” I maintain.

“Shut up!” Emily yells. “You are the only one who has entered my bedroom today.” She rises from the bed and charges at me, hitting me.

I don’t retaliate; instead, I dodge her hits with my hands. I know if I so much as raise a hand, Emily and her mother will lie to my father that I beat her up, and Daddy Dearest will run along with whatever they say. When her hits are getting out of hand, I grab Emily’s hand to stop her blows, but that is when the door flings open and Emily immediately falls to the ground, clutching her cheek and beginning to sob loudly. Luna Amelia quickly rushes to her side and holds her.

“What is going on here?” Dad’s deep voice asks as he steps into the room, his glare falling on me.

He always wants me to be at fault even when I’m not. I blink away my tears, trying to appear strong. He hates seeing me like that. Dad has hated me ever since I was born, for being the cause of my mom’s death, but since I did not get my wolf on my eighteenth birthday, his hatred and disappointment in me have only increased. He calls me cursed, weak, or pathetic. All my life, I have tried to prove to him that I am not weak.

Emily wails harder as she rises and runs to hug him. “Daddy, it’s Suri! She ripped my dress, and when mummy and I asked her why, she suddenly started to beat me.”

“What? No!” I say, turning to my father. “That’s not—”

But he cuts me off with a dirty slap that makes my head foggy and my ears ring. I bite my lower lip to keep from crying out. I glare at him as he glares back.

“How dare you?” he snarls.

I don’t answer him as we glare at each other. Despite his glare, he looks troubled. Something else is bothering him, but I do not care anymore.

“Now, get out,” he says curtly.

I bite back my retort and turn to leave. It is better to keep my head down than to provoke him further. His ill-treatment hurts me the most.

As I walk out of the door, I overhear my father saying to Amelia,

“There is a problem, dear. King Ragnar sent word that he and his cohort are coming to our pack tomorrow,” my father announces with a little panic in his voice.

My body stiffens. King Ragnar is the formidable Lycan King. He is feared among the packs, and everyone knows his visit to any werewolf pack does not always turn out good.

Leaving the main house, I walk back to the remote part of the pack house where my father isolates me and keeps me hidden away from his court with the excuse that I’m too wild to handle pack matters. He has named Emily his heir, and she is the one he takes to court and trains to take over from him. Most people don’t even know he has another daughter.

Once I get into my cramped room, I shut the door and allow my tears to finally pour.

I don’t make it to Emily’s birthday, but I know it’s going on. I wonder how my father can go on with an elaborate birthday when a threat in the form of the Lycan King is coming to our pack. But I don’t even care. After all, he would never accept my opinion.

The moon is high and bright in the sky as I make my way to the river. The river is a place where I find solace, away from the pack and everything going on.

I lunge into the water and submerge, staying under until my lungs burn. When I come up to the surface again, I’m shocked to see a man standing on one of the rocks surrounding the river area, looking directly at me.

My heart pounds frantically against my ribcage as fear grips me. He makes no move to leave or attack me, but his piercing gaze stays on me. I have not seen this man before, but he looks bigger and finer than any man I have ever seen.

I wonder if he is a rogue or an enemy. Whatever he is, I am not about to find out. Rogues and enemies easily penetrate packs on nights like this when everyone is distracted.

“Please,” I say, knowing he is an enemy waiting for me to come out of the water so he can do whatever he wants with me. “Do not harm me. I promise I won’t tell anyone what I saw.”

Silence.

I know that by the size of his bulging arms, he could kill me with one snap. Better to be seen as weak than to die a careless death. Without a word, the man turns his broad back to me and walks a few distances away. I quickly swim to the bank, grab my dress, shrug it on without wasting time, and take to my heels.

Luckily, the big man does not chase me, and I do not stop running until I’m in the safety of my cramped room.

In my dreams that night, the big man features in it.

~RAGNAR~I stare at the door a little longer after Suri shuts it.‘Shit hole. Douche. Jerk!’ Leo snaps in my head. ‘You hurt her!’‘Shut up, Leo,’ I growl back. But I know I did hurt her. I sit down and run my fingers through my hair. I shouldn’t have said all those things to her, but I still needed time to be in control whenever I see her. Still, I’ve gone overboard.‘Chase after her!’ Leo snarls.I’m still deciding if I really want to follow Leo’s directives or not when my office door bangs open, almost startling me, and Suri stands there looking like a goddess of fire. My brows furrow at the sudden furious look on her face. She had fled my office a few seconds ago, looking like a kicked puppy.“You know what, Ragnar? Fuck you!” she spits. My eyes widen at her choice of words. I can’t even find it in myself to be angry at her.“You can’t trash-talk me and expect me to go hide and cry in a corner.” She walks over to the couch in my office and sits down. “Whether you like it or not, I

~SURI~Three days. Three freaking days! That’s exactly how long that brick wall of a King has been hiding from me after tossing me into that cold, lonely bedroom. Nope. I am officially done playing the "patient wife" card. I march down the second-floor hallways toward his office, balancing a tray of fresh blueberry muffins in my hands while Runa follows behind me like a silent shadow. I know he’s in there. Well, I didn’t know until Nana spilt the beans last night when I maybe—totally—whined about his jerk move.“That’s just Ragnar being Ragnar,” she had said with a little chuckle. In his defence, Nana told me about the rogue sightings at the borders and how the King has been working non-stop to keep everyone safe. There is no doubt he’s a great leader. So, while I was baking a batch of muffins for myself this afternoon, I decided to be the bigger person and throw in a few extra for him.Not that I care about him. I’m just trying to be a civilised human being. Even if we’re not suppos

~RAGNAR~Bruce, one of our spies in Moonfang, made it back this morning after we received reports of another rogue sighting near our towns. The locals mentioned a newly carved route being used to slip in and out. It's an isolated trail through the thicket that our sensors missed. We checked it out this morning.During the ceremony yesterday, Uncle Crane had said it was just wolves passing through. I didn’t buy it then, and I sure as hell don’t now. Although our men said the route was created only recently, I can't help but wonder how many have penetrated our territories and why. The answer to that is probably sitting in the North Suite right now.Bruce gives a short, stiff bow. "Your Grace, two of our scouts went missing after a rogue hit in Moonfang last night," he says in a small voice."Missing?" Dray’s brows knit together. “What kind of rogue attack are we talking about? Werewolf rogues? How does a pack of rogues snatch two trained Lycans? Because that shouldn't be physically poss

~SURI~His scowl gets even deeper. “What do you want?”I bite my lip, trying to find the right words. “Uhm... I know what the contract says. Open marriage, no strings, whatever. But I need a promise from you."His brows knit deeply. "Out with it, little wolf." The impatience in his voice makes the words sound like a growl.“I don’t want you to claim other women,” I blurt out. “At least until I’m pregnant.”Yeah. That’s it. I know once he knocks me up, he probably won’t touch me anymore. But until then, I need him to stay faithful to me.His amber eyes stare blankly at me for a moment too long. Then, he lets out a long exhale. “You’re asking me for fidelity?”“Yes,” I answer way too quickly. “Not for the rest of the year, just until I’m pregnant.”"Why?""Because, I... I...""...the King usually prefers softer colours on his... companions..."Because Ruby told me you like 'soft colours' on your companions, and I don’t want to catch some nasty disease from your parade of mistresses. • The Contract Bride of the Lycan King    Chapter 18

~SURI~As the light snaps on and floods the room, I blink, squinting against the flood. I’m sitting there on the bed, stark naked, feeling like a fool who just lost a dare. The King freezes in the doorway. His eyes go wide for half a second, then dark and hungry, like he’s staring at his favourite meal and forgot he was supposed to be on a diet. He looks dazed, mouth slightly open. I’m suddenly very aware that I’m sitting here without a stitch of clothing."What are you doing?" His voice is so husky it sounds like he’s been gargling gravel."Waiting," I say, trying to sound like a boss even though my insides are doing backflips. I hold his gaze, refusing to be the first one to blink. No way I’m letting him see my knees knocking. "The party’s over, the rings are on, and it’s time to get down to business.""Business," he repeats, sounding like I just spoke a foreign language."Yes. Business." My hands are dying to grab the sheet and hide, but I keep them still. "You wanted an heir. That

~SURI & RAGNAR~~SURI~As we make our way to the refreshment table, Uncle Crane suddenly intercepts us. He leans in and whispers something into the King’s ear, too low for me to catch. Of course, I do not have enhanced hearing like them. The King nods immediately, untangles our fingers, and follows him without a word. Just like that. Poof. Gone.It doesn’t hurt. I swear it doesn’t.I watch him stride toward the grand doors where Dray’s already waiting. As they leave, Uncle Crane glances back and gives me this creepy little look that sends chills racing down my spine. I shake it off quickly. Probably just my imagination. I shove down the lump crawling up my throat about the King ditching me again and repeat my new mantra. It’s an open marriage. Don’t get your expectations high, Suri. But seriously, why an open marriage? Lycans are supposed to be crazy possessive. I have heard the stories. He nearly bit Kai’s head off for holding my hand two seconds too long. So why agree to an open mar
